David Ayers Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I am excited about the Russell. I have some of these on vinyl. True I've got mixed feelings about them, but I think the set will be an excellent opportunity to think about Russell again. It will be a good price, I expect, and I am looking forward to it. Quote
John L Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 (edited) Yes, I would spring for the Russell as well. I only have a few of the Russell Soul Notes. A box set would be a great excuse for sitting down with this music for a while and really coming to grips with this part of his discography. I have been meaning to do that for some time. Niko Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 one more new boxset appeared on the website, paul motian with the albums JACK OF CLUBS MISTERIOSO THE STORY OF MARYAM ONE TIME OUT NOTES the group on the first three is Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Jim Pepper, Ed Schuller, One Time Out is a Trio with Frisell/Lovano, Notes is a duet wit Paul Bley; strangely it's billed as 6 CDs so unless one of the above is a double album, one more album might be added... the individual albums from the cecil taylor and paul motian sets can already be streamed on the labels' page, e.g. Misterioso Quote
Niko Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) just stumbled across this italian article from last december it says: Sempre a proposito della label romana, desta sensazione l'anticipazione sulla rivalutazione prossima ventura del catalogo Black Saint e Soul Note. Seguiranno a cadenza bimestrale altri box a nome di Steve Lacy, George Lewis, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Max Roach, George Russell, Paul Motian e Don Moye. Le registrazioni saranno rimasterizzate e la grafica identica per tutti i box . Non vedo l'ora di vederne i primi esemplari... so "bimestrale" means every two months, i.e., they are behind schedule already... of the mentioned artists (Lacy, Lewis, Dixon, Taylor, Roach, Russell, Motian, Moye) three are in the next batch apparently (Taylor, Russell, Motian) which seems to imply that the list is old but pretty accurate (david ayres, where did you get the info re braxton, taylor, douglas you posted above?) so it looks as if Dixon, Lacy and Roach are on the horizon...! wonder what a Don Moye Set would include... tranemonk Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 that Paul Motian looks kind of interesting,,,, I wish they would do some David Murray, Mal Waldron, Jaki Byard sets............ Quote
king ubu Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 Very cool, thanks for digging that up niko! Motian is mighty good news - I only have "Misterioso" and that one's terrific! Quote

Yes I *did* see that list somewhere - I'll try to check just where - I think you can assume the sets I listed will come out... I'll get back to you Edited to add: I think I probably saw this page http://www.camoriginalsoundtracks.com/site/index.php?site=&path=cd_press&idcd=1552 Edited May 31, 2010 by David Ayers Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 I'm really enjoying the sound of the cds in these sets. Quote
Guy Berger Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Very cool, thanks for digging that up niko! Motian is mighty good news - I only have "Misterioso" and that one's terrific! I like Misterioso a lot but thought One Time Out was a dud. Quote
Д.Д. Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 I'm really enjoying the sound of the cds in these sets. Would you be able to compare with the original CD issues? Quote
jazzbo Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 Actually, yes, in a few instances I could and did. The new versions sound crisper, tighter, more "in focus." Also a bit more dynamic. That's the best way for me to describe it. I compared two of the Hadens that I had, a few tracks each, before passing them along to a friend. Quote

peterintoronto Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Is the sound of the Haden and Threadgill boxes as awful as the sound samples that appear on CAM? Quote
sonnymax Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Is the sound of the Haden and Threadgill boxes as awful as the sound samples that appear on CAM? From CAM re: Threadgill - A philological work, beginning with the original recordings on multi-track master tapes, patiently integrally remastered paying strict attention to the sound quality. Does that answer your question? Quote
jazzbo Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Is the sound of the Haden and Threadgill boxes as awful as the sound samples that appear on CAM? I haven't heard the samples and won't, but these boxes sound far from awful. I think they sound darned good. Quote
Niko Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 as an aside, I just noticed that the alphabetically first albums of the four new sets come after the alphabetically first albums of the four old sets in the list on the camjazz homepage (on this somewhat unorthodox list which is alphabetical by album title); chance of this happening randomly is about 1.4% if i am not mistaken... hope this doesn't mean, that artists whose alphabetically first album comes before "Out here like this" by the Leaders are excluded from the Box Set Thing... king ubu Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Hope not... I want a Mal Waldron box, a Lacy box, a Muhal box, etc etc etc Quote
Niko Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 (edited) Hope not... I want a Mal Waldron box, a Lacy box, a Muhal box, etc etc etc Pullen, Roach, Bang, Dixon, Hemphill, Braxton... all the stuff that was hard to get, maybe out of fashion, when i started listening to jazz Edited June 16, 2010 by Niko Quote
king ubu Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Yes yes yes! Bring them on... I hope the impression that these are selling well is indeed true and they'll go on with them for a while! A Giorgio Gaslini box of later material might also be cool (though I have several of his discs from that time), to complement (the hopefully continuing) "Integrale" anthology! Quote
peterintoronto Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 Is the sound of the Haden and Threadgill boxes as awful as the sound samples that appear on CAM? From CAM re: Threadgill - A philological work, beginning with the original recordings on multi-track master tapes, patiently integrally remastered paying strict attention to the sound quality. Does that answer your question? Not really, but I ordered them both anyway. I see the next four boxes have been delayed until September 3rd, 2010. Quote
felser Posted June 17, 2010 Report Posted June 17, 2010 How about a Billy Harper box? He did record the first album on the label, and they did name the label after him. Throw in the Soul Note 'In Europe' albums and you've got a nice set. Also looking forward to the Max Roach box. Quote
peterintoronto Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 Alright! Got my Haden and Threadgill in a week from Italy. Gonna smoke some healing herbs, put on the Haden and post my reactions. Quote
