Talked to Tatro on the phone once many years ago. Nice guy, pleased to hear that his music was the subject of admiration. He said that he was going to send me a tape of the premiere performance of the 12-tone guitar concerto he wrote for Howard Roberts, but the tape began with a radio announcer's intro and then nada. Crazy! I first became aware of Duane Tatro via his music for the 1960s TV show The Invaders. I think I learned of Jazz for Moderns here. I have played the album quite a bit, and I like the whole record, but I have not yet gotten to the point where I can really distinguish the tunes from each other. The ensemble textures are very similar from track to track. Not meant as a criticism; I will just have to spend more time with the album to really absorb the individual melodies and chord structures. The key piece there IMO is "Minor Incident,"with that beautiful horn call -- as firmly knitted together as a piece by Monk, albeit quite different in atmosphere. I believe that Bob Enevoldsen's valve trombone solo on that piece was written out for him by Tatro. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted August 11, 2021 Report Posted August 11, 2021 (edited) And now on this: Aram Shelton - Flockterkit (Singlespeed, 2008) Total sell out music. Everything is sacrificed in pursuit of the mass market. According to Bandcamp, as many as 6 people may have purchased it. Edited August 11, 2021 by Rabshakeh Quote

Maybe if I would have lived around that time, I might have attended those JATP events just to see all those giants. But I am too young and was born in 1959, so when I started to listen to jazz, it was more in the chronological order from mid -fourties on. And 1955 for me is mostly Miles forming his quintet with Trane, Cliff Brown and all the upcoming BN-artists like Mobley, Blakey, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins and all of them. Really Allstar Bands were very rare when I started in the 70´s. Giants of Jazz was finished, oh yeah, the one I really remind was VSOP quintet, that´s an all star unit I heard . 8 minutes ago, BillF said: This and "Four and More", some of my favourites Quote
Dub Modal Posted August 11, 2021 Report Posted August 11, 2021 From 1998. I enjoy the trio passages of Moran, Osada and Green the most. Osby can play but he seems disconnected from the group a lot of the time. Funny how it sounds like the closer, 52nd St Theme, is based on Woody Woodpecker's signature laugh. And now starting up: Quote

jazzbo Posted August 11, 2021 Report Posted August 11, 2021 "Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane – The Complete 1957 Riverside Recordings" disc 1 This set has lived in my car a long time as it's perfect to pop one disc in on the way to my Dad's and one in for the way back home--and provides a jazz kick and an intellectual snack for the trip. Today I took it out of the car to listen to on the main system. Boy does it sound great! Quote
