  4. Matt's been working on a new website, which at this point is hosting a number of articles and links as a sort of "recent index." My understanding is that he doesn't want it to be a discography (Discogs works well enough for that, for now). It'll be interesting to see how this resource grows. Anyway, for lack of a better place to put it, here goes: https://legacyofmatthewshipp.com/index/ the interview from The Ideas Letter ("A Pure Act in a Dirty World") serves as kind of a biographical primer until a true biography is written. Enjoy!
  5. I'm still around, occasionally.
  6. Grabbed the the Cecil. I couldn't pass it up. I did pass on the other zvi albums. I can't buy everything.
  7. Immanuel Wilkins has a new release! “Live at the Village Vanguard Vol. 1” Blue Note. I’m listening to the cd. I knew I would like it, I think Wilkins is one of the current leaders I like most.

  9. Owsley Stanley Foundation, which stands behind the legendary Bear Sonic Journal series, announced that have tapes from Miles Davis' performance at the Fillmore West on April 12, 1970 - the gig two days after "Black Beauty" recording. And that they want to release it on CD. Judging from the post and the comments it's not confirmed yet, but, God, I hope it will see the daylight! https://www.facebook.com/OwsleyStanleyFoundation/posts/pfbid02vTTrdYZCNoad3LKPDzdMyNgbxLCnhiqfWF586FMXip5rgyiNxDADE4DDeQ93LUYtl
  10. Quite like it
  11. Well, I can and did make such direct comparisons in the same system.
  12. I don't know many people who can compare different playback set-ups with such clarity when they were unable to A/B the two digital playback set-ups using the same amp/speaker combo. I know that I would have trouble playing a CD on my upstairs system, taking it downstairs to my second system, playing the same tracks and declaring with certainty that there were major differences between the two. My musical memory is good, but not that good. It works when comparing different CD masterings, but not the same CD.
  13. 1m 500×433 31 KB Danilo Perez, “Across the Crystal Sea” arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman Emarcy cd “Lazy Afternoon” sung by Cassandra Wilson. . .so good.
  14. To each their own. I had an Oppo UDP-205 til it died in my audio-visual system. It sounded good, but I have two other combos of transport and DAC that sound considerably better in my systems and rooms.
  15. If one has an Oppo UDP-205, it has a perfectly good internal DSD conversion path though. I don't see any reason to spend good money to experiment with an external DAC when my current solution meets my needs, even if it may or may not convert it to PCM first.
  16. thanks, Nat Birchall says it's worse than Bird at St Nicks but better than the Joe Brazil tapes... that's pretty useful as a frame of reference "Sonically not even up to the (very) low audio quality of Bird at St Nicks. If you're a musician studying Trane it's essential listening, if you're a music fan it's not really worth shelling out for. On the other hand it's better audio quality than the 1958 jam session at Joe Brazil's and the unreleased July 17 '66 concert in Japan, both of which I've never been able to listen to for more than a couple of minutes. At least with this, and Bird at St Nicks, the sound of the horn is so strong to begin with that it shines through the otherwise severely lacking sonic landscape. Caveat emptor."
  17. I love that series. I have all 123 single discs plus the sampler, the 11 "hors-serie" 2-discs, and the box sets. Still keep them together on the shelf in numerical order, which doesn't make much sense given everything else in my collection is alphabetical by artist, but I guess I just like *looking* at it as much as I like listening to it!
  18. I am sure you know that, but this is a way to pass the DSD signal from a SACD player to an external DAC with I2S input. The small I2S converter box costs 80 dollars. "At Long Last! Listen To Your (Physical) SACDs Through an Outboard DAC": https://audiophilestyle.com/ca/reviews/at-long-last-listen-to-your-physical-sacds-through-an-outboard-dac-r971/page/2/#comments "With the Oppo UDP-205, one connects the “Audio” HDMI output of the player to the input of the I2S converter box (if your player doesn’t have an audio-only HDMI output, use the video HDMI output) and the output of the HDMI side of the converter box goes to the HDMI input on one’s DAC. That’s pretty straightforward. "
  19. People on Discogs are generally not happy: https://www.discogs.com/release/37097442-John-Coltrane-The-Tiberi-Tapes-A-Preview-Of-The-Mythic-Recordings
  20. CD will contain same tracks as the RSD vinyl.
  21. Chuck Nessa

    Robert Johnson

    Another plug fpr this edition
  22. I read a comment that the sound was awful and they should have been ashamed to release it. But it was obviously from someone who has not listened to a lot of "unofficial" recordings.
