Probably neither. The holes have always been there. The difference is probably the age of the player and the "scum" on the lens. There has to be some sort of rupture or chemical reaction (from the label side) to damage the metal particles. This (in all cases I'm familiar with) causes a brownish discolor of the metal layer.
Most of these questions can be answered by listening to the recordings - or is this an academic question?
Listening is the next best thing to a primary source.
Glad to have you back.
Too bad about the JC thread and I direct you all to a JC thread by dizmonk about the backorders on the Gillespie/Parker cd. An edit (mentioned) has taken place.
Can't be too harsh on Lois (an old friend) but this is kinda sad.
While Rudy does charge for his work, that's not why he does it. I know about 20 years ago he was offered $2,000,000 for his lot - they didn't want the studio.
The January '68 date with Charles Brackeen was issued under Brackeen's name on Strata East.
I have more data on the other Frontier sessions (titles and timings) but can't locate my file.
More later.
I can supply information for the 2nd entry - Cherry/Grimes/Blackwell.
This was recorded in Atlantic's studio in NYC on November 29, 1961.
1. The Idiot (Coleman) 4:56
2. Harlemite (Cherry) 8:34
3. Black Elk Speaks (Cherry) 7:10
The GNP is a ripoff - it contains late 30's transcription sides with applause dubbed in.

Gene Norman was in town 20+ years ago and I called him on the Tatum records. He feigned innocence. Geez!
Not sure of recordings from the "old days" (other than private things) but Terry said John gave him a recent solo cd. John lives and plays in Fort Bragg, California and you could contact him if you want to.
Different guy. John was a friend of mine and one of the few white players to work with the AACM guys at the time. He lives in California now and was in Chicago last week. John Litweiler and Terry Martin spent some time with him and report he's doing fine.
