Since ballads were his "specialty" the classic sides collections feature these. I suggest looking for later stuff like the Black Lion discs. OTOH, the early stuff is better than dandy. Byas was a mofo.

Not a "sophisticated" call, but my current cheap, summer beverage is the "counterfeit" Fosters (brewed in Canadia). It is very refreshing on a hot day and available around here for about $8.50 for a 12 pack. Don't know about the distribution - could not find it in MO or IA this summer.

I'd suggest one of her earlier recordings. Did she do it 3 times? She became "mannered" in later years.

Don't do it Brownie, don't do it! Stay strong, my brother.

Lazaro Vega, who posts here, has had the same problem. He has worked around it a bit by getting waivers from the record companies. Some grant blanket waivers, some do it show by show and some will not grant them. Laz could fill you in on the details.

Organissimo is in the studio...

The Garner performances are as you might expect if you are familiar with his style of the period. He plays well, but Don Byas and Buck Clayton are at least as important to the concert. Sunenblick makes a few errors in his notes. He says only one disc is missing but there is no recording of the Tony Scott piece or any of the Pearl Bailey material. There is also (at least) one Garner trio disc missing and many other performances are missing parts. It would have been difficult to add material even if the Garner estate gave permission. It is a miracle all the Diz/Bird stuff survived. Let us count our blessings, not regret the losses.

My set has no sig but I have two of the bonus discs.

The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in
Chuck Nessa replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Osco Drugs, Ames Iowa, 1961. They had 4 or 5 bins of lps for $1.79 in the front window. Got a bunch of Jazzland, Seeco, Debut, Crown, Design, etc. Over the span of about 90 days I learned a bunch about the music AND the record biz. -
If this is the way you really feel, you have no right to your "phony balony" screen name.

Name of the company was changed after a trademark dispute. The label was (at least partially) owned by Fred Astaire.

Thanks Chuck. Guess I should have been more specific: What does this set usually go for? If it ebay's at $100, then I'll wait; if $250 or higher, then I'd pull the trigger. I have some of the cuts here and there, but would love to have it all in one place if $250 is fair / going rate. ← I think you were clear enough. When new I think I paid around $200 and it was regularly available. Not available now and I would pay more for the music. As an artifact "on the market" I don't have a clue. That's why I tried to make some sort of distinction - music vs. artifact.

21 Japanese pressed lps - that's 11.90 a disc. Your call. Edit to say the music is wonderful but your name indicates a vinyl interest so that is how I responded.

Mike is talking about 12 inch issues I guess. -
This brings up images of my dorm room in 1962.

Next best thing to jazz?

The Delmark received mixed reviews but I like it. The standards records with Hank Jones (they were on Magenta) always gave me the heebie jeebies.

Funny. I received the same notice today. Happy to retire my elderly lp. -
Attention KC folks - short notice

Hey, we'd all just eaten a huge breakfast. The main thing is we all look reasonably alert and reasonably bright. PhotoShopping to show our heads was a remote possibility. -

Attention KC folks - short notice

Well, I'm finally catching up and want to respond about our KC visit. We really enjoyed meeting Tom, Eric, Paul and JoDee. What an interesting bunch of folks. I'd love to spend a long evening with every one of them with some good music and a drink or two. It was an interesting experience for Craig - he (like the rest of the family) has no understanding of my interests/business and wondered how or why anyone in KC would meet with us. He and his family have lived in the KC area all their adult lives - he works at Tension Envelope and Winnie is an exec at Hallmark. Thanks to all for the wonderful time and thanks to Rooster for the music - I've only listened to the first disc so far but it is a dandy. If any of the participants want a higher quality file of the pic, let me know. PS: Craig commented on Rooster's "really good voice" when we sang Happy Birthday! -

IIRC they were issued in pairs in 1960 and 1961. -
Question for somebody in the business.
Chuck Nessa replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Copied from an old American Federation of Musicians Phonograph Record Labor Agreement: Location Recordings The Company shall give prior notice to the Office of the Federation President and to the Local of the Federation involved prior to making any recording on location during public performance. Location recording work shall be paid for at the rate of one basic session for each day of recording (from noon to the following noon). During any such day, no more than a total of three hours of performance shall be recorded. If more than fifteen minutes of recorded music is released for sale from each such three hours of recorded performance, the Company shall make additional payments equal to the regular hourly rate of pay for each additional five minutes of recorded music (or fraction thereof) released for sale. Guess it was simpler than I implied. -
Question for somebody in the business.
Chuck Nessa replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Simple answer is yes. Club engagement and recording are two different employers. The "live recording session" rules are/were weird. Much more complicated answer when I have more time.
