  1. She's fantastic. I will watch stuff she's in, just because of her. I even tried The White Lotus but only lasted like 10 minutes.
  2. Does anybody know anything about this? The band? The label? https://www.importcds.com/live-at-yale-university-october-28-1973/630428090224
  3. Interesting.. Did he identify himself as Black? Mixed-race children (especially of that era) often had the crappy choice of which side of their family to publicly identify with. There's a great movie in my Netflix queue called Passing, which kinda gets to that. I'm curious if he ever talked about it.
  4. I was looking around on Bandcamp and found this group. I listened to their most recent record and was very impressed. I'm curious what you guys think. https://charlesowens.bandcamp.com/album/the-music-tells-us
  5. Good to know. I just bought it but haven't had a chance to listen to it. I hope more of these get released.
  6. Both song selections and he sounded a bit repetitious at various points. It wasn't bad, just felt predictable.
  7. Might have been me... but you are correct.. It's fantastic. Hope they do another one, preferably live.
  8. I found it kinda disappointing.
  9. Never heard of most of these but based on the sample tracks there's a couple that interest me. I'm not real fond of the over-the-top reviews but... what can you do? https://daily.bandcamp.com/best-of-2024/the-best-jazz-albums-of-2024
  10. I purchased the download as there are three extra lengthy tracks in the download option. Having given the set a listen I completely forgot how beautifully Smith played. I went back to the Mosaic set and remembered why that was one of my favorite sets. I will definitely be purchasing the other Bandcamp title.
  11. Good for you. I ordered last week and am still waiting...
  12. I caved and got the cheaper set (Classic Vanguard set) for my Black Friday present to myself. A $60 difference from the Byas. I hope to get the Byas another time. Maybe folks can help me remember something. Didn't Mosaic occasionally offer a discount when a set was running low or was it on last chance? I don't remember them doing that recently but I thought they had done it before.
  13. I really don't understand why OP gets so much hate from some people... I don't get. I love his music.
  14. Thanks. I suspected someone brought this up but I couldn't find it when I searched.
  15. Is there a good list of Black jazz musicians who left the US for a long time and where they moved to? I've been intrigued by this since I learned about Don Byas. I think I know some of the more obvious, like Nina Simone and (I think) Dexter Gordon. I also listened to the radio and an Alvin Queen tune came up. I didn't know much about him (other than his new release on Cellar ) but the DJ said he moved to Switzerland (I think). I'm curious if anyone has generated a list. Thanks.
  16. Is it fair to say when listening to the Mosaic samples of the Byas, he does sound similar (at first listen) to Coleman Hawkins? I don't have any Byas and from what I read, there was a relationship between the two. But this will sound like a stupid question but how different do they actually sound (Byas and Hawkins)?
  17. Sounds like you're saying the Byas set is a better/more important/ buy than the Vanguard. Is that right? My sole hesitation is how I felt with the Chu Berry set. Rare, had to get it, only listened to it once.
  18. So several months later... What do you think? Was it a good purchase? I'm in the same boat and trying to choose between that one and the Classic Vanguard box coming out.
  19. Wait so now I'm really confused. We've got the Classic Vanguard Small Group Sessions (just coming out), a second set focused on piano settings. And then a third on big-band Vanguard recordings? Do I have that right? All from the Vanguard label?
  20. The only time I got to see him live was after his stroke. Yes, you are correct.
  21. I just listened to the sound clips and read the discography. Based on the personnel I am a little tepid but I'll probably get it. Sound clips are excellent though.
  22. There's also a 3 set bootleg from a performance in Ottawa that I hope they can find a way to publish formally...
  23. The disappointing thing is that the music's got to be out there. Wynton's JALC label came out with one of her unreleased live concerts three or four years ago. It was really good. I'm glad I'm not the only one wanting this.
  24. I'm still waiting for my 5cd Live Unreleased Betty Carter set... I can't believe people forgot how important she was. For me, there are five female jazz singers I have to listen to... Billie, Anita O'Day, Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter. I've got the Anita set. I assume all the Billie material has been released. Abbey Lincoln had a small box set years ago on another label. That just leaves Shirley and Betty. Given how many instrumentalists praise her, I don't know why there isn't a greater recognition of her. If Mosaic can find some Lennie Tristano stuff, why not Betty?
  25. I thought I read somewhere (Instagram?) from a fellow musician that he had gotten dementia. Can anyone else confirm that?
