Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
tranemonk replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Not too happy with Stan Kenton Capitol Sessions (Disc 6) <_< After reading Straight Life I was intrigued by Art Pepper's days with Kenton... then... I found an opened copy of this OOP on amazon for a decent price... Liked the Anita and Christy stuff early in the set (Discs 1 - 3 or so)... but by Disc 5.... :( -

Jamal Disc 7.... Damn tootin'! I've blown through the 9-CD set nearly twice and it's still not getting old. This is a keeper for sure! I'm embarrassed to say, I never expected it to be this good! :blush2: -

Horrible... One of the true marks of a great musician is when you KNOW there will NEVER be another Abbey Lincoln... You will be missed....

All Monk : The Riverside Album - WTF????
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Since I'm in the middle of Robin Kelley's book on Monk (The Life and Times of A True American Original)... I'm even anticipating even more this set. For those of you who bought the Miles set.. I know they didn't do anything to the discs (e., remastering, etc.) but are there ANY liner notes?? How do you know who's playing on each disc??? Is it printed on the back of each slipcase? Or is there a booklet?  thanks Below is a picture of the Miles box. The discs themselves are in thin cardboard slipcases, just like the Original Album Classics series and the recent Black Saint/Soul Note sets. They are exactly the same as the old OJCs. No new remastering, no new alternates, no new notes. I will be getting the set as a) I like this style of packaging and b) I don't really have $250+ to drop on the old Riverside box. -
Happy Birthday Man... What are you 29???? (again?)

I thought there were several songs from movies she had been in and I don't recall those being released on another disc (e.g., Symphony in Black, the film "New Orleans," etc. I could be wrong but...

I concur... it's actually excellent.. Lots of stuff on there you won't find anywhere else... I highly recommend it. Quite a nice set. Sound is good.

Ben Sidran's Talking Jazz Series - $8.99 on Amazon
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry I meant to put that in my post... This is an mp3 download. -
I was shocked when I saw this. For those of you who remember he did a series of radio interviews with jazz greats in the 1980s. The box set is still around and sells for $250. I have always wanted the set but couldn't justify the $$$. This price of $8.99 for the whole thing is ridiculous... So if you're interested grab it while you can... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UEZS0K/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000NE59VI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0HRVN800N7BYE1V8SYAF P.S. Many of the interviews are quite good!!!
