  1. Clearly I’m in the minority…but that’s why we listen… We can’t all like the same thing and we’d be in trouble if we did.
  2. WTF is it with these vinyl-only releases of stuff that's never been out before?... It's bugging me for those of us who don't want to go back to 1972....
  3. I saw Mary Halvorson and Amaryllis quintet last night in Cambridge MA. I was interested as to why she gets so much praise. I had two of her records and was primarily curious. The place was packed, surprisingly with 90% of the people over 50. I expected her audience would be the much younger Berklee College of Music crowd, especially since the tickets weren't that expensive. After a 90-minute set, I wasn't particularly impressed. It was fine. As my college daughter often says - it was meh... Excellent technical proficiency. One tune I liked a lot - sounded like Miles at the Cellar Door. But overall I wasn't moved. I didn't feel anything. Based on her records, it was largely what I expected.
  4. Did you see her live? I've only caught Youtube glimpses. I did grab her first release on that label from Itunes a few days and was very impressed.
  5. Thanks for the tip. There are a few titles I'm interested in that I might have to grab then. https://daynastephens.bandcamp.com/album/closer-than-we-think https://jihyeleeorchestra.bandcamp.com/album/daring-mind https://oneforall.bandcamp.com/album/big-george
  6. Are you going? I'd love to get a review if you are.
  7. I went to see these guys years ago (I mean in the way back machine) and I liked them a lot. I had never heard of them before. https://newwestguitar.com/music
  8. I listened to one track on Bandcamp. I generally have not been able to get into her work. This one sounded a little different so I preordered. We'll see. I'm not a convert yet.
  9. She was everywhere in the 90s. The only info I can track down about her is her website. From what I can gather she opened up a jazz club and maybe a record label. I tried looking at her Twitter account. The only thing there is an odd, cryptic like about Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign. I haven't seen her perform live in a long time. Does anybody have any other info?
  10. I thoroughly enjoyed this 3cd set... more than I anticipated.
  11. Of the many OP records, I've often thought this was the best....
  12. I just want my live, unreleased Betty Carter set. Let me have that and I will be quiet....
  13. Charles McPherson @ Newport Jazz Festival, Immanuel Wilkins Quartet @ Regattabar, Cambridge, and surprisingly Diana Krall at Newport Jazz Festival. I hadn't seen her in a decade and forgot how different she sounds from most other singers today.
  14. Unfortunately, as I think the OP has articulated there is no simple, super reliable solution to this problem (at least I don't think there is). I had Backblaze and I canceled it because I found the interface clunky and confusing and the backup was god awful slow (and I have a fast network at home). I'm on a Mac and have had a few digital disasters so I just gave up and am paying Apple to keep my stuff in the cloud. I pay for a monthly music subscription to an external spinning drive and an SSD. I considered a NAS but I didn't have the patience to figure it out. Please let us know if you come up with a simple, reliable solution.
  15. I didn't mean anything in particular. I think it was in reference to earlier posts seemingly being lukewarm to all the new releases. I like it as who knows how many of those artists would be getting recorded otherwise. Hope that makes sense.
  16. Just got through listening to the digital release... Very good. I hope there's another set or two in the future. I will say I enjoyed the Les McCann set much more than I expected. Sound quality on both was excellent.
  17. Hey as mainstream as it is, I appreciate him trying. I just purchased the new Jim Rotondi with Strings. Sounded very good.
  18. No renovation. It looks and feels the exact same... Really crowded. Some of the same waitresses even. But I still love the acoustics and the sight lines.
  19. This past weekend went back to the Regattabar (Cambridge MA) and saw Immanuel Wilkins and his quartet. The place reopened a few months ago. I forgot how outstanding the acoustics were there. He was outstanding. Very spiritual and understated. Highly recommended.
  20. Thanks. I don't even play CDs anymore but I like having the physical media for the most important records. I've had more than one instance of losing music that only existed in digital form. Even the best hard drives get corrupted and crash.
  21. Okay, I was fixated this weekend on these games. I was convinced it was going to be Michigan-Washington-Fla. State- Texas. I was shocked that they put Bama in. I understand the logic. I hated watching the Fla State game (so boring). I do think the Mich-Ala game will be awesome BUT I do agree that Fla State should have gotten in. I don't know how you leave an undefeated team out completely...
  22. This sounds very interesting... A sample is up on Bandcamp. I assume Gearbox is a legit company? https://abdullahibrahim.bandcamp.com/album/3 Taken from Abdullah Ibrahim’s summer 2023 sold-out headline date at London’s Barbican Centre, the new album “3” follows suit and is spread across two performances – the first is recorded without an audience ahead of the concert straight to analogue on a 1” Scully tape machine, which had previously been used by Elvis at the famous Memphis-based Sun Studios. The second recording is taken from the evening’s performance itself with Ibrahim performing in a unique trio which includes Cleave Guyton (flute, piccolo, saxophone) who has performed alongside the likes of Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Joe Henderson, as well as lauded bassist and cellist Noah Jackson, both of which are members of EKAYA and featured on Ibrahim’s Top 3 Billboard Jazz album “The Balance” credits releases January 26, 2024
  23. Are the liner notes... REALLY Good??? I'm leaning toward getting the digital, especially since each disc is only about 90 minutes or so. The digital is much cheaper given that we're talking about all three sets....
