Problems with shipping from the UK?
J.A.W. replied to Hoppy T. Frog's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Make that 11+ weeks... Just received a small packet with 1 CD (!) from the United States that was mailed (airmail) on November 26 last year and delivered by a private carrier. A delivery time of 2½ months, it's a disgrace. Another small packet from the same sender that was mailed on December 28 also arrived today, delivered by the same carrier... That one took 6 weeks... -

Aretha Franklin's complete Columbia recordings
J.A.W. replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't think as highly of the Arista material as I do of earlier Aretha. She remains a fantastic talent but I don't care for the arrangements, production, rhythm sections, etc as much. In all honesty I lost interest in almost all contemporary R&B around the time Aretha went to Arista. It all started to sound like an imitation of itself, but with less groove and freedom. The rhythm sections were tight but not spontaneous and in Aretha's case, she sounded to me like she was mailing it in. Maybe I just od'd on that type of thing and it was a case of me getting older and not digging the newer things, but in all honesty it seemed like most of my musician friends jumped ship a little before I did. I agree, there was an increasing uniformity and less and less individuality in the music. For me it began to go downhill in the 1970s. -
Sorry, but this is too much for me to follow, even in context of having re-read the above posts... Nat Hentoff is the guy who... (did what?) Who "he" (Hentoff, JR?) sued Schlitten? Got to think of us poor non-native speakers when making such references! It's all a bit opaque to me too

The Prevue reissue is indeed legit. They licensed several Xanadu titles.

Sorry to hear that. I hope it'll get better soon.

A bit out of-date on the 'crappy MP3' assertion. They may not be up to the exacting standards of the Hi-Fi buff but I'd say they sound 'very good' these days. Certainly much better than the first generation of CD remasterings of pre-digital music - or the thin vinyl that I bought most of my records on in the post-Oil Crisis years! I prefer CDs, they always sounded better on my system than the downloads I've heard.

Not all of us, the "non-downloaders" (like me) wouldn't.

Sonny Rollins 80th birthday concert in NYC
J.A.W. replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
This topic is about Sonny Rollins' 80th birthday concert. If you want to post about concerts related to Henry Grimes, please start a new topic in this forum ("Live Shows & Festivals"). Topics on artists belong in um... "Artists", so why don't you start a Henry Grimes topic there? -

Technically perfect, but robots indeed. Can't listen to them. Candidates for the "vice-robots" title: the Alban Berg Quartett.

Don't hold your breath. FWIW, I'd buy one. If Columbia UK is not a Sony-owned enterprise, it's not likely that this will happen. Columbia U.K. is owned by EMI. However, I understand from Sidewinder's earlier post that Harriott's Columbia material is owned by other parties.

And here I was, worrying over a few euros...

Hadn't seen it. Here's the Google translation, "as is" - haven't checked it for weird and idiotic translations: -

Porcy is from Rome, maybe he's willing to translate? This is the Google translation which I edited slightly to get rid of a few idiotic translations: -
Correct. Topic moved.

Yes: George Shearing, who was from the U.K.; Oscar Peterson and Maynard Ferguson, who were both Canadian; Johnny Richards, who was from Mexico; Toshiko Akiyoshi, who was born in Japan; and Django Reinhardt, who was born in Belgium.

True, but you have to admit that starting about a year ago, the place has gotten strange, to say the least. I think it started around the time Steve booted off the MFSL mastering engineers because they had the audacity to tell everyone that the DCC CD of Roy Orbison's greatest hits was made from 2nd gen masters. Rather than engaging them in a discussion about it, Steve simply banned them and any mention of the MFSL Roy Orbison CD. I've been told that if anyone tries starting up the topic again, their posts are removed and the thread starter is banned. BTW, both of those MFSL engineers have posted about the whole situation over on Stereo Central. They are not happy with Steve Hoffman right now. About 2 years ago several Hoffman forum moderators ("gorts") quit, among them a few who I thought were quite reasonable; "Pug" was one of them. According to Pug (on Stereo Central) some of them were increasingly unhappy with the way they were supposed to moderate the forum.

Which posts were "gorted", Kevin?

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
J.A.W. replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's strange, when I click on the link in my post above, I get the page with the samples; the "alle anhören" button is right in the centre of the page.
