  2. Amos Milburn (1927-1980) was one of the exponents of 1940s/1950s Texas/West Coast Rhythm & Blues. This set, which contains Milburn's 1946-1956 Aladdin recordings, is one of the better Mosaic sets in my opinion, with good sound, but, like Lon and Brownie indicated, it has to be taken in not too large doses.

I can imagine it now: "Hi Tony ... Shazam! These tripped out sessions from France contain some of the most ground-breaking music we've ever heard! Take it from us! At times, the music from these recordings hits that modally searching angular spiritual groove that was so prevalent in the air in France during the late 60's, but it never goes too far out, like other albums from this time, and reaches down for plenty of off-kilter solos that never fail to create a vibe which is like nothing we've heard before! We don't know what was in the water in France at this time, but it sure made for some killer tracks — a sort of longing for sadness behind the clouds, but a sadness that always puts a smile on our face. Tracks include ... oh, did you want the price?"
  4. I second that suggestion.
  5. My thoughts exactly. All the best to you and Alison, Jim.
  6. I was wondering about that, too.

That's right, but still... I didn't mind her vocalizing on this disc that much a few months ago, but let's just say that it hasn't grown on me...
  9. No need to apologize. I don't have the compilation, so I can't comment.

I'm in two minds about Clichés. At one time I kinda like it (though it's not even close to Lacy's best albums), at another time I don't care for it at all. And then there's Irène Aebi's vocalizing, which I'm not exactly a fan of...
  14. As far as I know, Columbia/Legacy 65117 (released on April 29, 1997) is the most recent reissue.
  15. Happy birthday.
  16. Have a great day!
  17. Porcy62's link was also in clickable form, at least on my computer.
  18. brownie, I think you and I are about the same age, so believe me, I understand. ... but I think we're still on #19 here. That's what you get when you're forward-looking...
  19. I've read that Bill (and Miles) got more than a little flak from black audiences who didn't like the fact that a white man was holding down the piano chair in Miles' band. His bandmates (notably Cannonball) defended him, but he could only take so much of that. That, and the fact that he wanted to lead his own trio.
  20. Here's an earlier Irène Schweizer thread.
  21. The track on "Milestones" called: Sid's ahead. That's what Brownie said a few posts back...
  22. I have a problem with the Schweizer solo albums mentioned in my earlier post because her playing sometimes sounds mannered to me in a way that's hard for me to describe. Her Chicago solo album is much more spontaneous to my ears. In my opinion the first few lines of the review of the Piano Solo albums in the seventh edition of the Penguin Guide hit the nail on the head: "Schweizer is not a natural unaccompanied performer. The most communicative of players, she needs no one to play against, but she simply functions better in an environment where there is an element of interchange and reciprocity." The review is favorable, by the way.
  23. Forgot about that one. It is one of her better solo albums in my opinion.
  24. I can recommend the albums Schweizer recorded with Pierre Favre: Irène Schweizer & Pierre Favre - Intakt CD 009 Ulrichsberg - Intakt CD 084 but I'm not convinced by her solo albums: Many and One Direction - Intakt CD 044 Piano Solo, Vol.1 - Intakt CD 020 Piano Solo, Vol.2 - Intakt CD 021
