  1. Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes! You know you're buying too many CDs from Borders' when they send you a birthday e-mail with a coupon for a free pastry! Bertrand.
  2. If it is Stuart Kremsky they are firing, they are idiots. Bertrand.
  3. I'm sure Jim will remove this ASAP - just give us enough time to bookmark the page
  4. Alan would get a chuckle out of it, from the little bit I know about him. Bertrand.
  5. Happy birthday to my man in LA! I had a great time hanging out with you last year, and I hope to be in LA again next Spring. Have a great day! Bertrand.
  6. Wayne on Witch Doctor. Bertrand.
  7. You have sold me. I will try to find a 'hardcopy' at one or two places (any leads?), if not, I'll get it from iTunes. Bertrand.
  8. According to the Wash. Post, it was Rick Germanson. Bertrand.
  9. If the keyboard player looked like Jerry Lee Lewis, then it was Kikoski. Bertrand.
  10. I believe this Impulse! CD is long OOP - there's one last place I can check. I don't really know Brown's music but I noticed two things: 1) Grachan Moncur III is on it 2) iTunes is selling it for $5.99, which seems reasonable considering there's no artwork etc. How is this record? Does Grachan solo a lot? I'm very tempted. Thanks, Bertrand.
  11. Thanks for the update - I added the Tolliver. How's the Steve Kuhn? After a moment of reflection (there is no scientific instrument precise enough to measure this brief amount of time), I've decided to pass on the Marsalis Bertrand.
  12. I'm sure you thought of this, but watch out for rabies... Bertrand.
  13. Why don't we all pool our money together, and the whole organissimo forum can buy Blue Note as a cooperative venture? How much would that be a person? I bet chewy's lawyer dad could kick in some serious moolah. Our first two reissues: the Tyrone Washington trainwreck, and Wayne Shorter unissued 10/13/70. The covers are already ready (see other thread). Should we keep Cuscuna and RVG on the payroll? Let's have a shareholders' meeting in the bahamas sometime soon. Bertrand.
  14. Wayne will be in the U.K. on 8/5. Ckeck out imnworld.com. They are not as good at keeping this up to date as they used to be, hence this thread! Bertrand.
  15. Brownie, Thanks. I saw that on Danilo's site a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, my summer vacation dates are dictated by my son's school schedule, so I have to be back in the U.S. on 8/25. This also means paying the highest plane fares. Yikes! they have skyrocketed. I am trying to book in the next few days for August; I plan to start a thread to get help looking for cheaper flights! Bertrand.
  16. I believe all the Joel Dorn Left Bank stuff is hard to find now. I came across a copy of Hubbard's Fastball the other day. I had never gotten this because I usually find Left Bank stuff really lacking in sound (for whatever reason, they prided themselves on using cheap equipment). The Ken Dryden review from AMG does point out he sound deficiencies as well. So my question is: is this listenable at all, or quite horrid? I suspect the playing is great, but I have so many fucking CDs I'm thinking of passing on this one. Thanks, Bertrand.

If you do go, could you try to get some contact info? I would like to get in touch with him concerning Cal Massey. I didn't even know he was still 'on the scene'. Thanks! Bertrand.
  18. The myth of 5/25 was an error created by Leonard Feather, IIRC, and then propagated, perhaps by Feather himself. I believe it's 5/26 - I think Miles even addresses this in the beginning of his autobiography (not that that's a particularly reliable source). Bertrand.
  19. Theoretically, you could skip the pants and the underwear.
  20. Happy birthday to the best jazz webmaster ever (and a great musician of course)! Bertrand.
  21. This is like that Far Side cartoon; the caption should read 'Joe fucks up'! I got to hang with Rodney and Carl when they were the rhythm section for the pianists at the Monk competition last year. We spent a whole Friday at rehearsals - real nice guys. Rodney used to teach Joe G. and B3-er and had real nice things things to say. Too bad they're not coming through DC - I'd be there in a heartbeat. Bertrand.
  22. Did no one tell Allen Lowe that any mention of wood-chippers on this forum leads to an automatic ban-for-life? God, I HATED that movie.
  23. There's a film of Larry with Tony Williams at Montreux (1971?). It's about 35 minutes. I have a 10th generation copy of this. Picture is grainy, but it's definitely Larry wearing the same outfit as on the cover of Lawrence Of Newark. The end with a 5-minute 'Big Nick'. They sort of play the head, and then Larry just plays some amazing freak-out shit for 5 minutes. I can't really describe it - it's beyond surreal. I hope Eagle Eye puts this out eventually, since they've been doing a lot of Montreux stuff. I was listening to the entire Into Somethin' while working out last night. Elvin really propels you to push harder on that exercise bike! I don't much about music theory, but I always thought Larry's harmonies on this record were just beautiful. It's relaxed yet 'urgent' at the same time. How does he do it? Harry Appelman, a DC-based pianist and organist, really captures that kind of sound when he's on the portable organ thing that he plays (in fact, 'Tyrone' is part of his repertoire). I hear it in his piano playing too. If you have a chance to catch him, I urge you to do so. One of the great unsung geniuses of the music, in my opinion. If life made sense, he's be recording like crazy. Bertrand.
  24. I had heard it before Lee was removed from the personnel listing, and I remember thinking he was pretty much inaudible on 'Popi', so I was not shocked when we was removed in later editions. If I remember correctly (I have a burn of this somewhere), I think you are describing the A-side. I remember thinking Lee as definitely audible (but not inspired) on that. It's amusing that Cuscuna never tried to tack this onto a Morgan BN CD as a bonus track. "Midnight Cowboy' is on a 'Blue Note at the Movies' compilation, probably long OOP. Bertrand.
