I don't believe I have seen his name on a recording since the Blue Note and Concord RVG series were discontinued. Did he quietly retire? According to wikipedia, he will be 87 in November! If he has decided to take a well-deserved rest, all I can say is 'thank you, Rudy' for everything you have done. Truly a key figure in the history of jazz. Bertrand.

This section also includes a map of the old Pennsylvania Avenue clubs and a comprehensive list of Left Bank Jazz Society concerts held during its existence This statement does not begin capture the wealth of info actually contained in the book. You have to see it in person. This is one of the many reasons I will miss brick-and-mortar stores. Bertrand.

Reuben Wilson- unreleased 1970 date
bertrand replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
I agree about Dunbar - not enough of him in my collection. I prefer his work with Tony Williams' Lifetime over McLaughlin's (heresy I know). Only 4 tunes so maybe it is unfinished. In the heyday of BN reissues, they could have tacked these onto one of the other LPs. But they heyday of reissues is over. When was the last BN reissue series? Three years or so? I remember buying a couple of RVGs in the fall of 2008 (Turrentine's Dearly Beloved and Lou Donaldson's Takin' Off). Was that the last batch? Bertrand. -
This is true every day! Bertrand.

Does anyone have a track listing? 1) Is the extra cut from For Sure! included? 2) What is on the Steppin' Stones bonus CD? Bertrand.

1) The Lee Morgan Live In Baltimore '68 is not from Baltimore. It was recorded at the Royal Arms Restaurant in Hyattsville, MD, on July, 1968. The concert was organized by the Left Bank Jazz Society of Washington, D.C., not the LBJS of Baltimore. This information is in the Morgan discography that appears on the University of Michigan Press web site and is affiliated with Jeff McMillan's book. I lived in Hyattsville in 1989-1990 when I went to UMD... 2) I saw this book today: http://www.apprenticehouse.com/index.cfm?p=catalog&id=32 The appendix has the most complete LBJS concert listing I have yet to see, culled from 4 yearbooks. There are still some holes (like 68-71) but we are getting closer. Some mouth-watering stuff. Tons of Woody Shaw in the 70s and 80s... Bertrand.

Yes, Wayne had a number of short-lived electric groups after Weather Report's dissolution, none of which made an official recording (the two post-1985 studio albums of the time have shifting personnel, including some members of the touring groups). The concert I saw in Paris on 3/17/87 at the Grand Rex movie theater really turned me on to Wayne. The group was Wayne, Jim Beard, Carl James on bass, Terri Lyne Carrington and Marilyn Mazur. There are a number of well-recorded shows from festivals around this time that could/should be officially released, with Wayne's permission of course (like they are doing with the Miles Bootleg box). Not sure what it would take to talk Wayne into it. Now would be a good time since a box set of his studio albums on Columbia is about to come out. The arrangement of 'Plaza Real' from this era (my favorite Wayne composition) would be justification enough to release one of these concerts. Bertrand.

That's the best one. There's also Duc des Lombards a few doors down. Bertrand.

It's called 'Just hanging with Chewy (and sharing a sammich)'. -
J&R Sale with possible free shipping
bertrand replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Odd - I had no trouble with this code. Just got 5 OJCs for $6 each and no shipping. Couldn't even think of a BN I wanted that I did not already have, although I paid a lot more for some of these. Thanks for hipping us to this sale! Bertrand. -
The Washington Post Express is a subset of the Post which is handed out for free in the subway. It is known for its shoddy editing: ridiculous typos, names in captions not referred to in the text, incomplete articles etc. On Wednesday, they outdid themselves: there was an article on the new Lou Reed/Metallica album. The photo caption said 'Reed' but the picture was of Reba McIntire. Bertrand.

The second half of We Want Miles is fantastic. Bertrand.

I've seen him 3 times this year already, and can't wait for the next concert. Lately I've been focusing on the Weather Report years, especially the recently released live sets from Germany. Bertrand.

Most of the time you can stay two sets, but when it's a 'major' artist, they do sometimes clear the room, or at least make you pay another $5 or $10. This may be packed, maybe not. That's what will determine whether we can stay another set. DC is a weird town. Bertrand.

The Bootleg series: good. The above collection: not good. Bertrand.

I'll be going on Friday. Saturday is the Yardbirds at Montgomery College. Bertrand.

Thanks, but I'd rather not do ebay. I saw a French pressing this summer in Paris for 22 euros (around $32) but that was still more than I wanted to pay. I also saw a used copy but it was in poor shape. I can wait a while. I do have it on vinyl. A friend of mine burned it to CD for me and he fit it onto one CD somehow. Just made a temp playlist in iTunes which clocks in at 80:03. Weird. Bertrand.

Is there a complete version of this (the US CD is missing a track) that can be found for a reasonable price? I found a few online but they are way too expensive. Also, why are they 2-CD sets? The whole thing fits on one CD. Thanks, Bertrand.

I figured it out - Bono hopes to sell enough of these to single-handledly solve the world economic crisis. Bertrand.

Album Covers That Make You Say "Uhhhh...."
bertrand replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What's the music like on the Hipp record? Bertrand. -
That's something I would have loved to hear live. They probably played some Shorter originals, based on the one private club recording which circulates from that era. Bertrand.
-
Thanks. This record always seemed somewhat incomplete to me, and an extra cut might have helped. The opening track is stunning, however. Bertrand.

It seems the 1970 Joe Zawinul Atlantic album Zawinul may have an unissued track ('Directions'). Was this on the Mosaic singles reissue of this album? If not, did the liner notes explain why not (e.g lost in the Atlantic warehouse fire)? Thanks, Bertrand.

Just got this - great music, and wonderful notes by Noal and Mike. Beautiful packaging as well. This is the way things should ALWAYS be done. Bertrand.
