  1. "Behind every successful man is a woman. Behind her is his wife." "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made." "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."
  2. I agree with Cliff. These are artists who created and performed music that a lot of us really enjoyed. Focusing on their physical appearance is shallow, something one sees in tabloids while waiting in line at the grocery store. To find a thread here that furthers this kind of discussion is disappointing. How about creating some threads that expose the natural process of aging in some of our favorite jazz artists?
  3. This material has been reissued so many times, including fairly recently releases by various Andorran labels. Is there anything that makes this set special?
  4. Room for one more Flanagan? Getting back to the OP, Tommy Flanagan is my favorite of the Detroit bop-mainstream pianists. He left an incredible legacy of trio recordings, every one of which is easily recommended to anyone who appreciates this genre. This one is especially good, imo: I will always remember Flanagan's shows in Boston every year in March a few weeks before his birthday. Great music, and a wonderful man.
  5. I may be wrong, but isn't the inability to play CD-rs or CDs that are in less-than-perfect condition one of the signs that a player is on it's way out?
  6. That does not answer my question.
  7. What do you find particularly scary about this incident?
  8. At present, no major news agencies are carrying this story. Roy's Wiki entry, which had earlier noted his death, has removed any mention of his passing. Only JazzTimes features an obituary, attributing the news to "multiple reports on social media sites," while at the same admitting "The cause and place of death were not reported." All of this painfully familiar, isn't it?
  9. The trouble with many automatic drip coffee makers is that they do not heat the water sufficiently (195-205 degrees F) to brew a great cup of coffee. Before I began brewing with a French press exclusively, I had great success with the Capresso MT600. The current model appears to have everything you're looking for and more: (10-cup, 24-hour programmable timer, stainless steel-lined heating system, stainless steel carafe, permanent GoldTone filter, charcoal water filter, etc.). Check it out here.
  10. Board down? Not down, just bored.
  11. I think this thread is a good reminder that no matter how "trusted" your source is, do not start an obituary thread until you can verify with a reliable and identifiable source. And oh yeah, I was right.
  12. I don't mean to disrupt the somber and respectful tone of this discussion, but it's been several hours since the original post and there is still no confirmation from reliable and identifiable sources that Mr. Silver has passed. JC doesn't name its source, and despite the assertion from Jazzwise that "It has been widely reported online and across social media..." I can find no evidence of this chatter.
  13. Since you already have an idea of what you consider "reasonable prices", why not let us know what you're willing to pay?
  14. I don't know if this makes any difference, but it appears that the box set is distributed by a U.S. company (101 Distribution), not an Andorran outfit.
  15. And believe me, when Jim manually validates you, you know it!
  16. Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
  17. :tup for Joe Diorio and Joe Pass. Some other suggestions:
  18. I don't think Amazon deserves to be singled out for the price increase you mention. In order to make a deal with the major labels, iTunes capitulated to their demand to raise the price of popular titles to 1.29. This allowed the labels to raise the price of these titles to other retailers like Amazon and ask them to pass this cost on to the consumer. Amazon is a smart company. I doubt that they relished the idea of increasing prices during a recession.
  19. The policy change went into effect on October 22. Earlier in the year, Amazon had warned that it's shipping costs were going to increase during the holiday season. The previous policy had been in effect for a decade, and the increased minimum puts Amazon in the middle of major competitors like Best Buy ($25), Walmart & Target ($50). The change also is being used to promote Amazon Prime, a yearly $79 membership that offers unlimited free two-day shipping on products, plus streaming of movies and TV shows. Unlike many of you, I don't buy CDs anymore and prefer eBooks when they're available, so trying to meet the minimum isn't a major concern. I buy a lot of different things on Amazon like cases of cat food, electronics, household items, some clothes, etc. So, while I can empathize with those of you who shop Amazon infrequently, I believe the increased minimum is justified given the rise in shipping costs over the past 10 years.
  20. I think the OP needs to re-read the "article" (actually, it's little more than a blurb) before getting too worried. First of all, the increased risk of glaucoma is presumably linked to low estrogen levels, not the pill, per se. The author (a reporter, not a researcher) uses phrases like, "Although there isn’t a firm conclusion, the researchers speculate that..." and "The data confirms only an association — not necessarily a direct cause — between oral contraceptives and glaucoma at this time...". Research studies are an important part of the scientific process, but their purported findings are too often reported by the media in a casual or sensational manner, causing confusion and distress in the general population.
  21. Can anyone out there help me identify the font used on this cover of Poppin'?
