is this the way to market 'jazz'?
sonnymax replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It has been, and continues to be, a way of marketing female artists. I'm interested to see if any board members strongly object to this approach, given the fact that the "sexiest album covers" thread is currently 242 pages long, with 9,669 replies and 425,089 views. -
Movie Gurus: James Bond of the past twenty years
sonnymax replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Dominic Greene: You should know something about me and the people I work with. We deal with the left and the right, dictators or liberators. If the current president had been more agreeable, I wouldn't be talking to you. So if you decide not to sign, you'll wake up with your balls in your mouth and your willing replacement standing over you. If you doubt that, then shoot me, take that money and have a good night's sleep. Yeah, a real sweet guy. -
That's my understanding as well. A numeric code is entered to make it region 1, region 2, etc. All you're doing is entering the code for "region free".

Movie Gurus: James Bond of the past twenty years
sonnymax replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The last two Bond films starring Daniel Craig are great, imo. Forget Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and any notions of 007 as a witty, elegant gentleman (a lethal Noel Coward?). Bond is a spy: an intelligent, resourceful, rugged individual. I never thought I'd be interested in (much less entertained by) a Bond movie again, but Casino Royale and Quantum Solace are smart, action-filled suspense films that are well worth seeing. -
CDs for sale/Potpurri jazz/blues/snuff

how much for the snuff? -
As I understand it, many low-cost dvd players can be made "region-free" simply by entering a numerical sequence via the remote control. Codes for specific players can be found online, with some sites offering the codes for free, while others asking for a donation. I suggest you shop for dvd players, then do a search to see if the code for that model is available.

Tubby Hayes and Clark Terry New York Sessions
sonnymax replied to BeBop's topic in Offering and Looking For...
The New York Sessions is a popular title on jazz-oriented P2P share blogs. The six tunes found on the original Fontana LP Tubbs In N.Y. are included in a recent digital download release called Introducing Tubbs / Tubbs in NY (Deluxe Edition), along with 9 tracks from Introducing and 3 tunes from 1961's Palladium Jazz Date (Fontana TFL 5151). -

Is there a point you'd like to make or an opinion you want to express about this topic? -
Why not order directly from the artist? I've purchased all of my DG music from Dennis himself.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who used to spend an entire afternoon traveling from one record store to another, hunting for rare, oop cds, or just titles on a long "want list". I used to call them "CD safaris" - remember them, Kevin? Hell, I think I even met Kevin for the first time in the Boston Tower Records store, only to see him again an hour later in the other local Tower as we both rummaged through a stack of discounted Japanese BNs. During these quests, you'd inevitably see familiar faces of like-minded jazz fans, and run into local musicians, critics, and colorful characters. Sadly, those days are gone. I only go to one record store now, and that's Jacks. Everything's online, and mostly downloads. Oh well, I've still got my memories, as long as my memory holds out, that it.

Why not indeed? 24/192 Music Downloads ...And Why They Make No Sense
-
That might appeal to some folks, but not to me. Spending as much, and in some cases possibly more, for downloads compared to a physical product is counter-intuitive and makes little business sense. I fully accept Chuck's decision not to offer downloads, although I personally don't agree with his assessment that they are necessarily "inferior". When I play my Nessa recordings, I'm not focusing on the sound, I'm experiencing the music, and I don't believe that mp3s prevent me from enjoying them in any way. But maybe that's just me. Anyway, it's been awhile since I placed an order with Chuck, so I'm going to buy a title or two from him. Although I rarely buy CDs anymore, a "Nessa" is always a good investment.

Sorry you're being hassled in this manner, Chuck, but I do wish your stuff was available for download.

Sandusky Investigation Findings
sonnymax replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
... Admittedly, I was wrong about Paterno's involvement during the 2001 incident and subsequent cover-up as was proved in the Freeh Inquiry. But, as you clearly pointed out, once the legal authorities in the 1998 case "cleared" Sandusky, there was no reason to believe, prevent or do anything else... While it's true that the authorities did not have enough information at the time to prosecute Sandusky in 1998, he was definitely not "cleared" of all wrongdoing. Sandusky himself admitted he was wrong to shower with and hug a child while they were both naked, and he promised the investigating detective he would not do it again. Of course, he lied, and he went on to molest and rape children for many years to come. The vast majority of child abuse cases do not result in criminal prosecution, but families and organizations nevertheless take action to protect the safety of the children. Much like the Catholic Church, Paterno and Penn State protected themselves, not the children. They deserve everything they get, imo. -
Might I suggest you use a cone next time?

So, are you going to give Simon your copy? -
I like the idea, but $17.98 for a 96kHz/24bit album, and a whopping $24.98 for 192kHz/24bit?!? These aren't CDs, they're digital files.

Sandusky Investigation Findings
sonnymax replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, we can disagree about how much/in what ways/how often, etc., but not any? It's almost as though you've proved my implicit point, that we human beings have an understandably powerful need not to see what is/has been/can be there. I'm trying not to overreact to Larry's seeming comparison of homosexuality and pedophilia. I hope I'm wrong in my interpretation of his post, because this position is an erroneous and harmful misconception that continues to be espoused by many people within certain religious and political communities. If we follow this illogic, then what is sexual assault by an adult male on a female child, heterosexuality? Sandusky is a sexual predator, a serial rapist, and quite possibly a sociopath as well. The fact that his victims were male (at least the ones we know of so far) does not make him a homosexual. Even hinting at such a connection is dangerous, as it promotes ignorance, intolerance, and often violence.
