I always loved Spock, and Kirk ..... well he "got the girl more often", as he himself admitted - but without Spock and the others, he never would have made it. Live long and prosper in volcanian heaven.

Like every great producer, he did some things his way, which was different fom what several others would have wanted, but that's the mark of a great producer. He did a lot for many musicians and made an awful lot of music available to us. I am deeply grateful for his legacy. R.I.P. - you will meet a lot of old acquaintances up there!

I've heard similar things about teachers and directors from the non-HIP scene. If so, consider that all mentioned are British. Consider all the cases of abuse coming to light in recent years in all types of school systems. It's the power over people, not the musical ideology.

R.I.P. - a deep bow to a great musical life that gave so much to so many people.

Thanks all! Spent a nice day with my wonderful wife, that's all, something we rarely find the time for as we both have a lot of work to do. She's the best gift - along with a call from my daughter - now that she's 18 she can make contact like she wants and not her mother, and that's really cool.

Very sorry to hear this - R.I.P. Saw him perform right here in my hometown a few years ago and was a little worried as he had gained a lot of weight. He was a renowned teacher over here. Very fine drummer who left us way too soon ...

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Glad I got a copy in the recent warehouse find sale - this music is so much better than I expected, but maybe my jazz abstinence for several months helped - it really re-opened my ears for this kind of music. -

Is Jarrett a hippie dude at heart? I'd say yes, but judging from that video, Charles Lloyd was just as much. That was the time when everybody did part of their basement jam sessions in public, I found it just as frustrating back then as I do now, as there is a lot of playing along each other without any real deep interaction. I dunno. Each to his own. Maybe just don't get what they wanna say ...

Jordi Savall made his version using an ancient sounding mixed consort, relating to the counterpoint in the canzoni of Frescobaldi and the like.

Album Covers With a Drawing By the Artist
mikeweil replied to Michael Weiss's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jeremy Steig did a lot of paintings and drawings for his covers - the latter for the inside of the fold out albums. -
The Pacific Jazz LP was on CD, used copies are available at affordable prices.

If you want a recording on harpsichord - that's the instrument it probably was intended for - the best, IMO are Davitt Moroney, Christian Rieger, and Sébastien Guillot: There are other issues of the Moroney with different cover art - its a double CD. All three make it sound like passionate music, not just the high art of counterpoint. Ensemble? Musica Antiqua Köln, who also made a DVD shortly before they split up. But the harpsichord duets are a bit shakily played on the DVD version.

When I had a garden, my compost took two years to ripen. Shredding everything helps considerably, and using the right place, slightly shaded. It digested shredded orange peels and the like. Tomatoes aren't easy to grow .... consider a small glass house, which elongates the growing period considerably. The best tasting brand is Black Krim tomatoes, which I luckily can buy from an organic gardener in town. https://store.tomatofest.com/Black_Krim_Tomato_Seeds_p/tf-0063.htm

Music Safe SonicSet Pro Sonic Defenders There a many more at specialist shops. If you wear them for longer periods of time, consider otoplasts, which are molded to your ear. Once you have tinnitus it is important, use protection, each new exposition to heavy impulses can make it worse, like a re-traumatization. There are test questionnaires on the web to help you judge the intensity of the problem and how you cope with it.

I have some slight high frequency tinnitus, led a samba group at some time with two many agogo bells and no ear protection ( young and foolish that I was). It is not that loud, so it won't bother me, sometimes I forget about it completely. If it was louder I would consider acupuncture - it helps in some cases. A stress-free life and relaxation helps, too. Get enough sleep. But the damage to the ear is considered to be irreversible, that's true. Protect your ears, folks, even in loud concerts - there are great earplugs for sale that just cut off the extreme loud impulses which are the real threat (mine was worsened when my former partner emitted a loud cry of pain into my left impaired ear during childbirth labor, another moment where I cursed myself for not wearing earplugs) , and do not impair the whole requency range. The best are the anatomically adjusted ones you can get at the shops that sell hearing aids. Threre are reports that a therapy with exposition to the exact frequency of the tinnitus, or slightly beneath it, might help, but I don't have details - an old friend that I rarely see anymore who once worked in an audiology laboratory mentioned this. Try any alternative treatment you might find. It's the attitude that counts the most - once you find it bothering, it's hard to change that attitude.

Drummer Joey Baron had a trio with trombone, sax and himself, no bass needed due to the presence of Baron's big bass drum, and I think another one with trombone, bass (Ron Carter?), and drums - Bassdrumbone (?) ... can't recall details right now.

Many thanks for posting this - many, many years ago Doug Hammond and Peter Giger told me about how Alan Skidmore told them about these, but they couldn't recall all of them. But they also had some more: A club manager named Willie Pay, an alcoholic on trumpet named Willie Bley, and his brother, drummer Kenny Bley. Great stuff. Plenty of Kennys and Willies in the band, of course!

Now that's perhaps the only one not recorded ar Van Gelder's - how's the sound of his sessions?
