  1. Doesn't quite go with this thread, but had to post it...
  2. He's also on Patton's "Boogaloo", also from 1968 (but unreleased until about 1995) -- which is maybe my all-time favorite Patton date. And I never realized (until I just looked) he had not just one, but THREE leader dates. Here's everything that the AMG is aware that he's on, but no bio (though all three of his leader-dates do have reviews).
  3. But the thread's still open!!
  4. Actually, "Offering and Looking For..." is the right place for this...
  5. No, it's the other one.
  6. + =
  7. Any other pictures from the event??
  8. Who the hell ELSE would have been playing with Grant Green, circa 1966???? A quick 'n' dirty check of the AMG semi-confirms that damn near EVERY date Green was on (with organ) in '65, '66, and '67 -- was either with John Patton, or Larry Young. The ONLY exception is Billy Gardner, who played on Lou Donaldson's "Musty Rusty" for Cadet, and also George Braith's "Extension" (only 2 out 9 sessions -- the other 7 are all Patton or Young, plus two or three dates without organ). I'm sure Patton or Young would have been Green's first-call choice. Whether either of them were available, or not, is really the only question (in my mind).
  9. DAMN!!! What is it with Harry Whitaker not (or almost not) releasing stuff until it's been in the can for a good 30 years?? "Black Renaissance" from 1976 barely came out at all (back in the day), and really didn't see any even modest distribution until less than 10 years ago. And now this, all from 1981 & 82, but which only just came out last year. This is mostly one hell of barn burner!! (Forget the AMG review, trust me, this is great!) -- though I'll agree with them, that the first track is kind of a snooze... . ...but the rest (almost 44 minutes worth) is REALLY fantastic -- in the Dusty "spiritual" sense. Terumasa Hino is on nearly every track, and Rene McLean's on well more than half the album (exclusively on tenor too), and Gary Bartz is on everything that Rene isn't on. And the last two 'long-ish' tracks have a double-size group that also includes Steve Grossman, John Stubblefield (and others). What's not to like?? Sangry -- you NEED this one, trust me. It's available on CDBaby, or Amazon (both with samples of most or all the tracks), or worst case: cheap copies can be had easily on-line in the usual places (for like $2 or $3 a pop, plus postage -- or if they're already gone, then less than $7, plus postage). THIS DATE KICKS ASS. VERY much "Black Renaissance", the sequel. (McLean and Hino are both outstanding here -- fans of either or both should really take note.) Not sure if this is limited to just the U.S., or available world-wide -- but you can stream the whole thing HERE. Remember, skip the first track (trust me).
  10. Yeah, much as I hate to admit it -- I'm in the same camp on this one. I really like two of the five dates, but almost can't stand two of them (borderline "smooth"), and the last one is just "OK".
  11. In answer to the poll, all of the above.
  12. Anything to this, people?
  13. So I'm at a doctor's appointment this morning, and got into some small talk with the nurse. Somehow the subject of jazz comes up, and -- I swear -- the first words out of her mouth were how she was a BIG fan of BONEY JAMES -- just LOVED him, tons. White gal, mid 50's. She also mentioned Rick Braun and David Sanborn, and one other name I can't recall (somebody I'd never heard of) -- but she mentioned the Boney one TWICE even. It was all I could do NOT to say "Really?? BONEY F*&^ING JAMES???".
  14. Thanks for the longer clip. But, really, is this all the footage of Green that there is in the world?? This one date? I would should hope not.
  15. I would call them, and ask what the situation is. I put in a big order earlier this year, including one set that was a pre-order (and had them hold the whole thing until the pre-order item became available), and I *think* I wasn't charged until much closer to the time when it actually shipped. I may be remembering wrong -- it was only about a 6-week lag between ordering and shipment -- but I still think it would be worth a call to them. I didn't think it was their policy to charge for things that far in advance of shipment.
  16. I think that's the April Fool's joke.
  17. Is there ANY footage of Grant Green, anywhere?? This clip (just one solo) is the only thing I've ever seen, and I'd be surprised is this really is all there is. >>> <<<
  18. C.N.R., back from the dead, and kicking a Moose's ass before the 2nd verse. (pseudo White Stripes, via Weird Al.)
  19. >> LONG Digg thread<< linking to the same article as post #1 in this thread. Haven't had the chance to read it yet myself (the original article, nor the long Digg thread), but since Digg is such a general audience (not just music people, and certainly not just JAZZ people), it could be interesting to see what people are saying there. (Or, it could well be total nonsense -- like I said, I haven't yet read it myself.)
  20. Love the Conn, never heard the RVG.
  21. Yup, here too, same thing.
  22. I'd like to hear that material too, someday.
  23. Wow, I hadn't expected you'd be buying this set, Chuck. If I might ask, do you also have the complete Jack Johnson box? And/or the complete Bitches Brew set? I know these eras of Miles' career are not particularly your favorites. But I can't help but asking if you have a preference between these three eras of Miles' career?? How might you force-rank the three?? (I have all of them, and the one I listen to the least (by far) is the complete Bitches Brew set. I've never been able to get my ears fully wrapped around the BB material.)
  24. And George Freeman!! (Von's brother)
  25. Pretty good and groovy version of the Jackson 5's "Ill Be There" on Boogaloo Joe Jones' 1970 Prestige release "No Way!". It's most easily found on this two-fer (Legends of Acid Jazz, Vol. 2, with the ugly cover) Just listened to this for the first time today in fact (got the two-fer as a cheap cutout from Dusty on Monday), and I liked it more than I'd expected to. Early Grover Washington on both dates on the two-fer, all on tenor (no soprano, whew!!).
