  1. I got a “under maintenance” last week when I came to it via my old (saved) link from my iPhone — the one that displayed new posts. Did that for several days, even after (I later learned) the board was back up and running. Deleted that shortcut, so I don’t have it to share — but I suspect that’s the problem.
  2. Aural evidence of musicians really listening to each other, closely (and responding in kind, even if only in subtle ways) — especially when playing live. AKA, jazz with multiple players needs to be a conversation, and I need to be able to hear that. (And far too often it isn’t, and I don’t.)
  3. I’m not sure I “need” everything that I definitely “prefer”… …but some things that definitely push my buttons harder include… At least some modest amount of collective improvisation (think Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh together). Or some degree of interplay between a soloing instrument and the rhythm section that seems much stronger than just simple “call and response”. Doesn’t have to be ‘frenetic’ — but something that isn’t solely divided into predictable (metrical) time-intervals. ”Free” or “free-ish” playing is better (for me) when there’s also some sort of repetitive ostinato (usually in the bass, but it can also be in another chordal comping instrument). ”Left turns!!” — stuff that isn’t entirely out of character for the tune, but turns that aren’t predictable or stuff you can see coming a mile away. Pedal-point bass and/or static harmony is also often a BIG plus — but only as long as the other improvisational components are sufficiently ‘interesting’ too. ”Inside/outside” playing (Sam Rivers’ Blue Note output is a good example, as well as Grachan Moncur and especially Andrew Hill). It doesn’t have to swing, but a pulse and/or a strong sense of forward momentum with some sense or “rhythmic organization” is hugely helpful too. In fact, some of my favorite players don’t ever swing: i.e. Gary Thomas. Those are just a few off the top of my head.

  5. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ My wife and I had the scherzos from each of Foote’s three string quartets played at our wedding 21 years ago. And more accurately, we used the arrangement Foote did himself if the scherzo from his 2nd quartet, for flute and quartet (the very one on this CD) — as the final piece before my wife walked down the aisle. We had a fantastic quartet and flautist of all KC Symphony players for the whole thing, including the first-chairs of the 2nd violins and violas, and the second-chair cellist — and principle flautist too (iirc). They all played in an annual summer chamber-music series in KC, which we attended religiously for years. Very tuneful, and danceable music. Fond memories. We went crazy with the music, not surprisingly — the one area we really maxed out on getting exactly what we wanted.
  6. I’m usually a hard-pass on anything with the Mizells — at least definitely as far as studio stuff. But I’m gonna see how this sounds when it’s all streamable — and I’ll bet I’ll end up getting it in the long run (probably six months after it comes out).

  9. Great! Hey, where are we in terms of the yearly-total to date on donations? And remind us what the expected expense for the entire year too. Meaning… “where’re we at?” and “how far do we got to go?”
  10. I’ve ‘sold’ a number of CD’s to board members too this year, incl. a recent batch for $60 (which went thru on Sept 29th) — except I had the purchaser ‘pay’ the board thru a donation (not a penny to me). And I don’t think the donation total has changed since before then, iirc.
  11. Wouldn’t we have all heard about that, if it had? It’d be one of the top stories for a couple days. I listen to Marketplace for on NPR every morning (a couple different 10-minute segments, at 5:50am and 7:50am every weekday) — and I haven’t heard a PEEP about Amazon or Meta loosing that much value in one day. Why are we putting up with posts like that? — which should really be deleted, when they’re clearly disreputable.

  13. Just got a push-msg from the local NBC tv affiliate here in DC, of a fire that occurred at Blues Alley less than 2 hrs ago. Don’t seem to be able to link to the story (link only goes to NBC4’s app, and it makes you download the app to see it). It may be on their website later. D.C. Fire and EMS received a call for a fire in the ductwork before 6:30 p.m. Firefighters found fire burning through the attic and roof, according to D.C. fire. The building was evacuated, and firefighters brought the fire under control and ventilated the building. Blues Alley’s owner told News4’s Mark Segraves the building is gone because of damage from fire and water. He said only a few people were in the building at the time. Record-release shows by Owen Broder was scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday. Cuban trumpet legend and Dizzy Gillespie protégé Arturo Sandoval is scheduled for four nights at the club beginning Thursday. How about somebody put that Roy Books out on CD, by a real (legit) reissue label — since it’s never been on CD before (far as I’m aware). $13.99, maybe $15.99 (If they have to) for it on CD… …not $30 dollars for some fucking bullshit colored vinyl nonsense. I would have had this Roy Brooks title on CD years ago, if any (legit) reissue label had ever bothered to have done it.
  16. 25-30 years ago, I thought maybe I’d like Charles Ives “The Unanswered Question” played at my own funeral — but I don’t think I would pick that again now (and I haven’t thought about it probably 20+ years). I’d probably pick something more upbeat now — and maybe a little more raucous too, perhaps.

My cousin said he dad (my uncle, who’s enormous Downbeat collection I ended up with)… my cousin said her dad wanted something called “Blood Count” played, and maybe also something called “UMG” — and she had no idea what either one was. Quickly figured out both were the tunes from His Mother Called Him Bill, “Blood Count” and “U.M.M.G.” — so we played them during the visitation, announcing that he’d specially asked for them — and then we spun the entire album, iirc. Had a memorial service for him several months later (lot more people, as he’d died a couple weeks before Xmas), and I think we played both tunes for that too.
  18. Just got a used copy of this from Dusty to my door a couple days ago, and have really been enjoying it. The timbre is very slippery — and Mark and Gary ‘play as one’ very nicely, just like Lee & Warne were together. Nice selection of tunes too, imho.
  19. I’ll have to do some digging to see what my earlier CD of Out To Lunch was (not even 100% sure I still have it) — but I have a hunch it was the 1987 McMaster. In any case, I do know that the SHM (UCCU) edition with the bonus tracks sounds dramatically better than whatever I had before. And I say ‘dramatically’ because normally I rarely notice sonic upgrades unless they are pretty significant (and I rarely repurchase titles just for potential and purported sonic upgrades). Not ‘never’ — but rarely. BUT, I was really taken aback by the improvement in the sound quality of most of the 4 (or maybe 5?) SHM Blue Note reissues a few years ago — all of which I bought because of the bonus material (Out to Lunch, Unity, Mode for Joe, and a Wayne Shorter title I’m forgetting specifically — and maybe one more, can’t remember). But… I’m not sure yet if my earlier copy of Out to Lunch was the McMaster, or maybe the US RVG.

Addendum: …and by “crazy money” I just meant over $50 — which always seemed crazy for a ‘Leo’ CD — a label where (at least at one time) it wasn’t all that hard to find various Sun Ra titles, and a lot more reasonably priced too (at least 10-15+ years ago, anyway). Was Lito just sold in a lot more limited quantities for some reason?
  21. After almost 20 years of looking, I finally just found a copy of this on CD. I'm sure I've never seen one out in the wild -- and I'm not sure I've ever seen one online even (or not for anything less than crazy money, and even then, only after it sold). Dusty Groove had one (just arrived yesterday), for $25 used. More than I wanted to pay, but I've been wanting one of these for going on a quarter century(!) -- as I think I first heard it in the late 90's, maybe around '98 or '99.
