  1. Cover doesn’t ring any bells, so maybe not that one. And now I’m suddenly wondering if I ever had as much of this session pre-Miles/Trane box, as I thought I did.
  2. I’ve never owned the “Legacy Edition” 2CD version of KOB, and haven’t even thought about it in a decade or more (if I ever even thought of it at all). But for no particular reason I looked it up online today, to remind myself what all was on the 2nd CD (because I couldn’t for the life of me remember, and I thought it was all live stuff) — but come to find out that most of it is all studio stuff from this May 26, 1958 session… https://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Sessions.aspx?s=580526 So how I’m trying to remember where all I might have first had these tracks back in the 90’s (before the Complete Miles & Trane a Columbia box, which I do have, but it’s buried in a box under several other boxes of CD’s at the moment). Some of the ‘hype’ for this “Legacy” set says it brings together all the songs from that May 26th session “for the first time!!” — the only session besides KOB to feature all those same musicians. Peter Losin’s wonderful site does list all the various releases (by catalog number) for each of those tracks… but I’m trying to wrap my head around where all most or all of them would have been most commonly found? (If you click on the plosin url for that session above, there’s a mountain of different catalog numbers for every track, none of which are linked so you can click on them and see what they actually are). I imagine I probably had most (even all?) of this session quite early in my collecting — but my mind is drawing a complete blank as to what releases they might have been most readily available on BEFORE the release of the Complete Miles & Trane Columbia box. I’m seeing “Love For Sale” was on the Circle in the Round 2LP comp — but to my surprise, none of it is on the similar Directions 2LP comp. Maybe I did have some or all of them, but if I did, I sure can’t remember where any more. (The 90’s seems like eons and eons ago, I’m afraid!)
  3. Ah, thx! Didn’t think to try and look up each individual session (or that didn’t come up searching on plosin and the title of the CD). (As much as I use Peter’s site for Miles info, I should have realized his Bird stuff was organized the same way.)
  4. I’m finding a brief announcement about the disc on Losin’s site, and the actual discographical data on another page. Am I missing where he discusses the contents? — particularly about “Margie”? (Or maybe I overlooked it.)
  5. Thanks Dan, much appreciated. As I’m reading the article, about halfway thru I realized I’d just spent more time reading half this article than I had listening to any Chopin in probably 20+ years. But then, there it was — Roger Sessions’ name popped up halfway thru — and it’s definitely not every day you see Roger Sessions name anywhere! (…other than I’d just listened to Sessions’ 1st, 2nd, and 3rd symphonies last week.) Anyway, now I’m back to finish the other half of the article — but so delighted was I to see a reference to Sessions, I came right here straight away to mention it.
  6. April 7th, 1967 — one of the last handful of times Miles played “So What” — with Stinson.
  7. It wouldn’t be my first priority either — but I’d definitely buy that full session on CD, if for no other reason than it’d be just a little more Frank Mitchell out there in the world. I’ve never heard the two ‘missing’ tracks before — I know they circulate, but by chance have they been uploaded to YouTube or anything?
  8. Eduard Tubin, Symphonies #1 & 5.
  9. The only one I’ve ever owned was the McMaster of No Room For Squares — because it’s one of the few BN dates with Andrew Hill as a sideman. I presume one of the other of the four (it is four sessions, right??) came out specifically as the McMaster of The Turnaround! — correct?? Basically, to cut to the chase — can someone remind me about how to get these four sessions (was it four full-length sessions??) — on four separate CD’s, one session per CD?? I’ve never been able to wrap my head around these sessions, and I’ve decided to ditch my domestic RVG’s of Squares, Turnaround, and my CD of No Filter too — and I can’t for the life of me remember the 4th one (or if there ever even was a 4th one).
  10. One 10” album, that I’ve read is just 3 tunes, so maybe 20 minutes of music I’m guessing?

  12. Chuck, may I say it before you get the chance to? Sigh…
  13. I wonder if the National Weather Service will ultimately (in a few or several years) come up with a new numerical system beyond just the “Cat 3, Cat 4, Cat 5” we all know — that integrates the threat of storm surge into the number. There are lots of Cat 3 hurricanes that get downgraded to 2 and 1 quickly — but still dump *massive* amounts of rainfall on an area, and have huge storm surges.
  14. I have Soul Connection on CD with a different cover, this version… https://www.discogs.com/release/2590178-John-Patton-Soul-Connection At least I’m pretty sure I still have it — will have to look for it. Good album, also with Grachan Moncur (a good part of the reason I got it).
  15. Will be thinking about you, Dan. When is the predicted landfall?
  16. I might mention that my wife(!) really likes Free at Last (ECM) — as well as the Legendary Hasaan date with Max Roach. Whenever I put them on, she always asks “who’s that?” — and then she calls them “nice and bangy!” or words to that effect. (I can always tell when she likes something I’m listening to, if she asks who it is.)
  17. Vinyl only?? Sam’s also has (had?) a 5-sided 3LP of Nathan Davis live in ‘65 backed by the Georges Arvanitas trio. And I would have GLADLY paid (even at a premium) for a nice 2cd set of it. Same too with this new Mal trio.
  18. This seems to be the full clip (full tune)… …from the same YouTube uploader: Disorder at the Border, 1966. Featuring: Dizzy Gillespie (t) Kenny Dorham (t) Thad Jones (t) Howard McGhee (t) Bobby Hackett (c) Ruby Braff (c) Clark Terry (fl-h) Jimmy Owens (fl-h) Billy Taylor (p) Kenny Burrell (g) Gene Taylor (b) Vince Schaeffer (d) Recorded in Newport
  19. While I probably won’t rabidly devour this book, but I imagine it’ll be a good read — maybe a darn good one at that. If the reviews are positive , or if someone here reports back it’s good — I’m in.
  20. Not perfectly in tune — but it’s about 5x better than several Left Bank live recordings I’ve heard.
  21. Sounds pretty darn good, far as I’m concerned. Looking forward!!
  22. Much better quality picture of the album cover here… https://www.plaidroomrecords.com/products/pre-order-mccoy-tyner-joe-henderson-forces-of-nature-live-at-slugs-release-date-11-22-2024
  23. This page where I found the cover art also has a track listing (…and btw, the Steve Hoffman link above says it’s 2cds!) https://www.allaboutjazz.com/album/forces-of-nature-live-at-slugs-mccoy-tyner Tracks: In 'N Out; We'll Be Together Again; Taking Off; The Believer; Isotope. “In ‘N Out” and “Isotope” are Joe’s tunes. “We’ll Be Together” is surely the Fischer/Laine standard. There’s a McCoy tune called “The Believer” from an early-1958-recorded session on the 1964 Coltrane album by the same name — and I’m seeing it’s credited to McCoy (I guess that’s right, but 1958? — I thought Trane and McCoy didn’t cross paths on record quite that early, can someone set me right?) I don’t know “Takin’ Off” at all (and nor does Google, with any of the names on this live date). Maybe a spontaneously improvised tune. EDIT: Yeah, it appears “The Believer” was written by McCoy, and recorded by Trane a couple years before they recorded together. https://concord.com/concord-albums/the-believer/ • The title piece was composed by McCoy Tyner, still a teenager at the time and more than two years away from his key role in Coltrane’s working quartet.
  24. Cover art!!
