  1. Does Chuck stock this one?? (sorry for not posting in the stupid questions thread ) Eric
  2. Keep 'em coming, guys and girls. This is exactly what I was looking for!!! PS - Came into about $200 of "stupid money" that is going 100% to recs off this thread. Picked up five of the above so far ... Eric
  3. My ears are in need of (further) opening. My music collection includes just about all styles, genres, eras, whatever. I am looking for something that is simultaneously challenging and fun. I am very open minded. Does not need to be "pure" jazz by any stretch and I don't really care if it is free/avant garde, as long as it is FUN to listen to. Something where you say to yourself, "I bet they had a ball recording that". Only other qualifier is that I don't want something that is merely novel, something that will not have staying power. Just tell me what comes to mind ... something YOU really dig (regardless of what the fricking critics say), something you return to. Guilty pleasures are OK, as long as they meet the other critieria. Thanks Eric
  4. Pulled this CD the other day and have been "re-grooving" to it. For a genre that sometimes get kinda stale, this really is quite fresh and fun. Plus that cover still slays me!!! Eric
  5. I bought this CD and think it sucks. It is almost like "Jazz 101" or "Jazz For People That Don't Like Jazz". The styles are all over the place and none of them are very successful, IMHO. There are moments where his playing sounds nice, but then he moves on to something else, usually something with a "retro" feel. Out of respect for the guy, I try to listen, but my mind soon wanders and I lose focus. Kind of sad ... working "hard" to listen to something that returns little in return. Sadly, this doesn't feel like a particularly honest effort. Or perhaps it is, in which case I have zero interest in the guy from an artistic point of view. Eric
  6. Thanks for the heads up Rooster. I will be in Columbia to see the uhm ... Indigo Girls Eric
  7. I snagged this a few weeks ago from CD Baby, but have not had a chance to listen yet ... will go to the top of the rotation ... thanks for the heads up. Eric
  8. I am laughing my ass off!!!! Eric
  9. I LOVE Coltrane, all periods. Is it possible that this is just a piece of crap??? Eric
  10. have to admit I always thought he was a bit of a head case - but 31 on the back with 5 birdies, including 18 and slamming the door on Els ... that kicked ass!!! Eric
  11. Springsteen - Jungleland U2 - Bad The Jam - Burning Sky Eric
  12. When was the last time two SI pre-season no. 1 picks actually finished no. 1? Powerhouse program ... good thing we (KU) snagged their AD (Lew Perkins). Eric
  13. could also try Sleeve City: http://www.sleevetown.com/index.shtml Eric
  14. The fact that he now takes PayPal is a big plus too. The international money order route was a little cumbersome. Eric
  15. Really??? How will Tech stop Okafor? Schensher has played well and within himself vs KU and OSU, but I see that little run coming to an end. Still, GT did kick their butt earlier this year. I think it will be a good game though. Eric
  16. What a bummer ... I once had a hot iron land right on top of a bunch of my lps. Melted the record edges so that it was impossible to play the first cut on either side. Eric
  17. After this discussion last fall, I went out and bought the Will Ferrell SNL best-of. The whole thing is a scream, particularly the spoof on Jeopardy with Sean Connery and Burt Reynolds (played by Norm McDonald). The extras are pretty damn good too, esp a clip from Conan where Ferrell goes on as Robert Goulet and never breaks character. Speaking of SNL, for some reason I had a vision this am of the "commercial" for Steve Martin Penis Cream. "It's the only penis cream that features a picture of MY penis on it." The close-up of the jar contains a warning that says "Not penis cream". What a hoot!!! Eric

I have that Reuben Wilson session on the original lp. Sadly, it is not nearly as good as the two that came out in the Rare Groove series or "On Broadway", his first on BN. Probably the best way to descibe it is boring ... the grooves are not all that engaging and the soloing is not all that complex (even for RW). I will probably take a pass on this one ... too bad they did not pick "Broadway" instead. Eric
  19. How are the trio sessions? I have all the stuff with horns ... all of which is very nice. Eric
  20. Over in the CD Baby thread, Jim recommended a CD by Adam Scone which I picked up. I also posted the following over there, but could not figure out how to quote myself "cross thread" Anyway, what I said there probably belongs here: "Digging a little deeper into the Adam Scone vibe ... I noticed that both he and the alto guy on Scone's CD (Ian Hendrickson-Smith, who also has a CD on Sharp Nine) have a band called the Macktet. So ... after listening to a few samples on their site, I snagged this as well (the "Liftoff" CD, they have a few). This is a very cool CD, with a little more grease and grit than the Scone CD. I could not find this at CD Baby (which of course is the point of this thread ), but I was able to get it from the K-Pasta website (the Macktet's label). Definitely worth checking out." Eric
