  1. You HAVE this?! THE rarest album I know. Lucky you!!! gregmo
  2. I got to see all the nominated Shorts at the Living Room Theater here in Portland--Docs, Animated, and Live Action. There are some really amazing pieces there, well worth seeing if you get the chance. gregmo
  3. Going to see ALL the Oscar-nominated shorts tomorrow. It'll take most of the day, but I'm looking forward to it! gregmo
  4. I ordered a bunch of them the day the sale appeared here on the Board, and I'm glad I did. Just wish those Max Roach albums had been there!! Still, thanks to Soulpope, I have put them on a wish list, so I'll keep looking! gregmo
  5. Except that these two don't seem to be available from Jazz Messengers. Can't find them on the site. gregmo
  6. Haven't seen anything on this here on the Board, so I thought I'd post the url. It looks like a good line-up this year. It all begins the last week of February: https://pdxjazz.com/2019-portland-jazz-festival/ gregmo
  7. Just to add to the craziness, the "Young Sassy" Proper Box appears to cover her Columbia material through 1950, but nothing more. It repeats most of the tracks from the Legacy "In Hi-Fi" release, but adds around 24 or so more. Chronological Classics releases stop in 1952, but, of course, Vaughan continued recording for Columbia through 1953. It occurs to me that the Columbias would have made a nice Mosaic Select box, though they might not have been able to fit all the alternates on one. Here's the last Classics cd:
  8. Mike has cleared up this fascinating little discographical mystery, but it did cause me to get out what I *think* (Jeffcrom will correct me quickly on this, no doubt!) was Cole's "first" 78 album on Capitol, simply titled "Capitol Presents The King Cole Trio" (BD-8). It's a typical four-78 album. No Latin jazz on it. Apparently, there were three more albums, and a tune titled "Rhumba Azul" did appear on volume 3 (also issued on 78). If anyone is interested, here's a view of the original:
  9. I think all the Waller JSP sets are well worth having, but then, I'm a bit of a Fats fanatic! gregmo
  10. LOVE this series!! gregmo
  11. That's what I would have guessed. Thanks for the confirmation. gregmo
  12. I actually have a "reissue" of this album--four 12-inch 78s--but on "RCA Victor Records." I wonder when that "reissue" was done?! gregmo
  13. Wish I'd gotten some of the Blues/R&B boxes (Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, Spann/Hopkins). I had all the Vee Jay stuff on cd already on Blue Moon, so I cheaped out and only got the booklets for the Shorter and Chambers box sets, but I should have gotten the Mosaics. Those were here and gone pretty fast! Oh yeah, and I somehow didn't get the Grant Green/Sonny Clark box (face slap!). Have the music on cd, but still....... gregmo
  14. Only him and Sonny left, alas. gregmo
  15. It does seem like every time anybody thinks they've issued everything, some new alternates turn up, but all that said, the JSP box and the 2cd big band set are pretty damn good. I assume those other alternates are on the Frémeaux boxes?? By "vocalist sessions," do you mean the blues singers? Affinity reissued those on a 6-cd set. Hard to come by, for sure! gregmo
  16. The JSPs are pretty complete for the Okeh material, and the Victor set above reissues his earlier recordings for that label. Did he record for Columbia in this early period? gregmo
  17. Thanks, medjuck!
  18. Yeah, I told a friend that it's a hell of a note when I get to the point in life that the only time I put on a tie is to attend a memorial service. And I'm putting it on a lot more than I once did. We just keep on keepin' on--and listening to great music. gregmo
  19. I know Mosaic contemplated seriously doing a Hi-Los set way back when but dropped it for some reason. Then Jasmine and Collectibles came along and screwed the pooch. gregmo
  20. The live things, yes (Town Hall Concert), the studio things, no. Victor reissued those.
  21. As I was looking "back up" this thread, I enjoyed the Ellington version of "St. James Infirmary," so I went looking for it, and I don't seem to have it! Which "big label" swallowed up the old Perfect label? Have all those by Ellington been issued in one place on cd?? gregmo
  22. Yeah, I agree that the "Big Short" stuff mostly failed here, though I actually kind of liked the Shakespeare moment and the "credits" scene. I think it's because the film tried to do two things at once--be a standard biopic AND sort of a hit-piece on Cheney during the Bush Admin. If it had aimed only for the second, it might have been a bit more effective. but that's just IMHO. Bale was amazing, though. gregmo
  23. Not many! The Verve recordings, the late stuff (post-1960), and the Mobile Fidelity things that the Andorrans put out. I'm also curious whether there's much of anything new on this upcoming set. As I mentioned on another thread, they may be hoping for some good sales on this one to beef up the budget a bit. gregmo
