  1. Aretha was also a class act. I remember her showing up at the March on Cancer in 1998 to offer support and a song or two. What a great, great artist she was. A foundational voice in American--world--music. gregmo
  2. You guys laugh, but Elon Musk is actually working on a way to put a chip into the brain to access the Cloud, and I recently read an article about people who have chips inserted into their hands so they can enter their apartments without keys. Me, I'll stick with keys, thanks very much. And cds. gregmo
  3. I found it used at the Paris Jazz Corner on one of my trips there. Always loved that store!! gregmo
  4. Damn, you're right. I stand corrected!! Guess I'll have to hang on to that Decca GRP cd after all! gregmo
  5. The discography for this set shows all the Deccas from the late 30s on. Responding to other questions, there are definitely reissue holes. The Japanese did reissue the fairly rare "New Swingin' Herman Herd" recorded in 1960 for Crown, but that one is not exactly popping off the shelves, and others have mentioned some Columbia stuff left out of various boxes. Mosaic issued a cd single of "Woody's Winners" from the mid-60s that also included some of "East-West," but one has to scramble to find some of Woody's mid-60s Columbias on cd. And French CBS did issue the post-war Ellington Columbias on 5 cds as "The Complete Duke Ellington, 1947-52." That set included all the singles as well as the first Ellington LPs for the label. gregmo
  6. Well, I'm in. I've always loved Woody. Verve did issue a number of the MGM things in its 2-cd "Woody Herman at Carnegie Hall" set, but it will be nice to have all the Deccas and the Mars stuff. Back in my younger days, I loved "The Turning Point" on Decca's old Jazz Heritage series (still have it), but the sound was so awful, I couldn't listen to it anymore. Almost *any* version will sound better! gregmo
  7. That would make it easier for Roscoe.... Nice house, Chuck. Hope you get a good price for it! gregmo
  8. I.e., you're a lot like the rest of us on this board (well, the "insane" part, anyway!). Thanks for the detailed reply! gregmo
  9. Forgive me for being a bit lazy in not looking through this (great!) thread to find out, but I'm wondering what turntable/cartridge/stylus you use to play your 78s. Some of these--like this one!--are so valuable, I'd almost be scared to play them at all! gregmo
  10. Nice to see you back Jeff!! gregmo
  11. Jazz Moose years ago when we lived in the same small town. gregmo
  12. Damn, and I had really been successful getting THAT image from years ago out of my head.... gregmo
  13. I'll vote for Hank. Maybe the Critics history group will bring Don Byas in. If not, Byas next year! gregmo
  14. Bizarrely, I don't appear to have some of this either. I know the Rollins material was reissued on cd in the Complete Rollins Prestige box. What's the best source for the other material on cd? gregmo
  15. He was 79? Wow, that one snuck up on me. A great, great trombonist. Playing one of my favorites by him right now. RIP
  16. Just saw that one last night. Wild ending! gregmo
  17. It is occasionally a bit confusing as to exactly who is writing which notes. As for Loren, maybe he was just a little too close to this one? That said, I found most of the notes to be pretty good (especially Morganstern) and the music to be wonderful. And medjuck is right--some very fine Pres clarinet here! gregmo
  18. Couldn't agree more. The notes point out how important this set is for expanding Hershel Evans's discography. His version of "Star Dust" on disc one is really lovely. gregmo
  19. Japanese cd reissues seldom include bonus/alternate tracks. gregmo
  20. Yep, absolutely. One little thing: That Armstrong JSP 2-cd set is 1930-32, not 1930-42! gregmo
  21. The Savory set finally arrived, and I opened it to find that I have booklet number "2." There's proof positive that Mosaic sets really are random. I'd have thought that Cuscuna or Wenzel would have gotten the first numbered booklets, but I guess not! Lacking any of the self-control some of you exercised, I went straight to the first Basie disc (V), because the Old Testament Band has always been my favorite big band, period. The magnificent exuberance of that band comes through loud and clear, and I came as close as I ever have to one my earliest and most exquisite listening experiences: the first time I put the old Decca 2-record "Best of Count Basie" disc on my old "portable" stereo turntable nearly 50 years ago. Jimmy Rushing in full shout, Lester Young unloosed, Herschel Evans before early death robbed us of him. I am *really* going to enjoy this set!!! gregmo
  22. I'm with Larry on this one. He always struck me as a particularly melancholy man. I did love his shows on Vietnam, but that profound sadness was always either just below the surface or ON the surface. gregmo
  23. So, I got to thinking, what Mosaic have I not played practically since I got it? This one. It's actually pretty good:
  24. Mine was charged back on May 29. Still no sign of the set. Patience....patience....... gregmo
