I'm pretty sure that Criterion doesn't own a piece of Hulu. Hulu has just licensed the films from Criterion and eventually their license will expire. (Though they may renew it.)

OK I found out. Art House is just the film without any of the bonus materials.

They're basically the same. Janus Films is the majority owner of The Criterion Collection. (Of which. I'm proud to say that I was one of the founders back in the Laser Disc days-- I've nothing to do with it today.) The Essential Art House releases may have fewer bells and whistles but I presume they're using the same transfers. I'll try to find out.

I think it means you still pay for your membership but get a credit for that amount to wards whatever you purchase. But I'm not sure it can be used against downloads or only merchandise.

If you like this (and I think it's great) I highly recommend the 3 DVDs released documenting The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966 which seems to be from similar concerts from a different tour. As a concept they could have announced the album, had friends review it and never actually record it. If anyone wanted to buy it they could have claimed it was OOP.

I've always been curious about the Pennebaker archive. IIRC he once said of the 1966 Dylan tour of the UK that he'd given the negatives to Dylan and Howard Alk and they'd cut it to pieces for Eat That Document. Then I read somewhere about him saying that he had it all buried in his backyard. Then with no explanation it showed up the the Scorcese documentary about Dylan. He had a realistic sense of the importance of what he's shot. I remember him once saying that if something interesting was happening he would run off and shoot it whether or not he was making a film on the topic. Now, of course, everything is captured on an iPhone or a security cameral, but Penny was there before it was easy.

RIP I saw him playing acoustic bass with the Mike Gibbs band in Hampstead many years ago (though after his stint with Cream). I have a vague memory of his once being in a band with Carla Bley and Mick Taylor.

I have a vague recollection that the record got a lukewarm critical reception when it was first released and the tracks without Trane are the only tracks from Miles on Columbia 1955-75 that are not in a box set which makes it sort of an orphan Lp. It's a great record and Trane's solo on the title track is a monster. It also has some of Wynton Kelly's best playing. In his Miles bio Jack Chambers is sort of dismissive of the record but I've always liked his description of "Teo": "Teo catches Davis playing with a Spanish tinge much in the manner of 'Sketches of Spain', and Coltrane follows him with a tinge that drifts eastward toward, say, Lebanon...." Chambers thinks some of the pieces were edited by Macero but I don't think I agree. Until I heard the alternate take of "Prince" I thought the piano solo ending seemed like Kelly just stopped playing as if it were a rehearsal but both takes have the same structure.

Let us know as soon as you have copies for sale. I'm the only one I know of who doesn't appreciate "But Beautiful" but I really liked "The Bear Comes Home".

About 50 years ago saw Reggie Workman with The Jazz Messengers and was knocked out by him.

I'm nervous posting this since I can't find any info on Google News but John Altman's Facebook page and Wikipedia say that Tim Hauser of Manhattan Transfer died today. I used to like the radio show he did in LA.

I'm curious: Can you easily tell the difference between the original and the copy? (Is it live or is it Memorex?)

I finally gave in to the urge and spent as much as I ever have on a single disc in order to get Jazz at the Plaza vol 2 in the mistaken belief that Billie Holiday sang with the Ellington band on her two titles. Turns out she has her own backing group. It's Buck Clayton on trumpet but who's in the rhythm section? The generally excellent on-line Holiday discography lists the Ellington band. Anyone know who the other musicians are?
