  1. Not really needing much encouragement but their booklets are a major plus, wonder what and will be covered in this one, complete bios of everyone who claimed to have seen Bird in Kansas etc..... seriously it's just been too long,

Just received from indiejazz.com are very interesting disc by Giorgio Occhihipinti: Hereo Nonetto as well as a sampler of stuff on Cryptogramophone .Not familiar with this label at all but it's pretty good, impressed by the Eric Von Essen material and Erik Friedlander. any recs from this label ??
  4. er...it's KoKo not Jack the Bear...ooops
  5. Hadrian's wall did a great job for many years keeping the English out of Scotland. That's part the reason we have a buoyant jazz scene of course.
  6. I had no idea these were relatively hard to find, over the years I've had much more mileage out of "Eternal spirit" than " But not farewell"
  7. I must listen again , I may be getting muddled but Track 1- Chris Barber ??- trad revivalists of some sort certainly but very nicely played ......I thought track 8 was "Jack the bear" played by piano trio in the style of John Lewis( certainly it has much of his approach). Track 12 ,Body and Soul ? Dexter Certainly it must be LTD's voice prior to the last track
  8. tried this and they cancelled order, computer error they said,,, oh well.......
  9. Some really lovely stuff on this disc, last night I wildly went through my EKE discs to discover the identity of Track 5, it's Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet with Ellington but I'm damned if I can remember the name. I have a studio version of said track but can't remember which album it comes from.
  10. Stephane Grapelly and his Quintet (sic)- Improvisations EmArcy MG 36120. think this one saw light in the JiP series
  11. where can this be got ?

I don't find the raggedness of Let Freedom Ring off putting , it's an excellent release. I must however get some more Polar Bear, i've only heard their broadcast from last year on BBC 3 jazz on three, twas super excellent indeed.. extracts of new album sound very exciting..........
  13. Thank s Flurin both discs are great, I've listened to both many times over and keep forgetting to make notes on who's playing, from what I can remember Disc 1 Track 1 - gotta be Big Ben plus Nordic types Track 2- early Hawk ??? Track 3 Hawk with Fletcher Henderson Track 4 Hawk- pre B &S with Europeans as you see I'm not going to get any prizes here !!!!

    Joe Maini

Do you mean this one? (Wasn't it originally on Pacific Jazz?) That is a great album. Maini just rips it up. Should be in the permanent EMI catalog. It blows me away that Maini wasn't offered (to my knowledge) a recording as a leader circa 1954-60. Imagine ~ Joe Maini: alto saxophone Carl Perkins: piano Red Mitchell: bass Frank Butler: drums Frank Rosolino: trombone (track 3 only) recorded Summer 1957 Introducing Joe Maini VSOP yup
  15. this is probably the best OJC I've picked up since this thread started, totally excellent---

    Joe Maini

I first heard Maini on the Kenny Drew Quartet/ Quintet BN Cd , love his tone and playing , pity hi small group work is so hard to find.
  17. Pretty pointless airing my rarest recording, as I promised the artist that the recording was for personal use only. I don't break promises.....
  18. this is more or less what I've been doing except using very small quantities of washing up liquid in the wash and then a splash of photographic "wetting agent" on the rinse cycle

    Henri Texier

I enjoy this one and Mosaic man, the new one sound promising too.
  21. Happy belated birthday
  22. got this one sealed 6 months ago for the same price, nice disc
  23. the recent batch of RVG s in the UK are copy protected .
  24. This is a great set, I'd like to see in the liners of Mosaic sets where possible a brief note/essay by the the leader reflecting on his work contained in the set. It add a little further understanding for some listeners.
