  1. Man, as a long suffering fan of my local uni's sports teams I feel you on this. Negative fans indulge in a toxicity that make it a tough environment. I've come around to ignoring all that and it's helped.
  2. Interesting. Thanks for that. And I forgot to prefix "football" in my post as "American football." You caught it though 👍
  3. How was the Chilton book on Hawkins? Saw it at the store recently and thought about going back for it but haven't yet.
  4. There will never be relegation in the US, at least not in my lifetime. Minor leagues and college athletics (which are the minor leagues for football and basketball) dominate that secondary tier; and outside of traditional/original sports cities that's where you'll find most of the community-bonding among fandoms and towns. Relegation would kill interest in smaller market teams, which play in stadiums underwritten by local municipalities. Looking at that kind of economic consequence, legislatures would get involved and absolutely prevent it from happening - because taxpayers foot the bill for stadium construction. I don't think the UK has the same college-as-minor-league system correct? (and that's in any sport) It's a totally absurd system in just about every respect but it's so big in terms of revenue that it's basically permanent. Although the NBA's G League and Euro leagues are chipping away at college basketball's establishment, they're still not close to adopting any sort of relegation. And forget about US soccer. Maybe in 3023...
  5. Records and turntables are near to being Rube Goldberg-ian. It's that aesthetic that's part of the appeal.
  6. I didn't get any Mosaics until about 8 years ago. They were kind of a crash course in learning about this music as they were all blind buys. From there I went online and purchased some of the last vinyl sets they had; Sun Ship, Emarcy Mulligan and Roland Kirk.
  7. The light is hitting the silver type on those sets just right so it's incredibly difficult to tell what they are. Damn Mosaic design! 😄
  8. I'm going to defer to others to figure this one out then. Interesting. Swallow always adds an appreciated dimension to whatever setting he's in as well. Also on last month's BFT 👍
  9. Makin' Whoopee if others are correct on song title. I couldn't recognize that myself however. Unfortunately the resolution makes it impossible for me to read - even with zoom. So, Bob Cranshaw - looks like he switched to primarily electric bass around the mid to late 70s and kept at it for quite a while. Is he the the most prominent bass player from his era to make that switch? And it seems he did it while sticking with hard/post bop related music, and not venturing into fusion, etc. (although he did go outside of jazz). Anyway, kudos on including some hard to find songs on this BFT. Usually with some combo of artist/song/album/duration songs can be sleuthed out but that's not so easy here.
  10. A baseball researcher too. Nice.
  11. Ok, attempts at the low hanging fruit partials here: Sleuthing long shot for #2 - is it from this album? Even with the stars of the show figured out, this album's a tough one to pinpoint. Looks like #3 comes from this album - all the correct guesses on it made the album less difficult to sleuth. For # 6, I think it's the song Intermission from this one. If that's the case, discogs says the pianist is actually Zita Carno whom I've never heard of. Mickey Roker & Bob Cranshaw round out the trio. Or is Mary Lou actually playing and this is from a different album? Maybe discogs is incorrect with the credits? Of course, I could have the wrong album guess as well... # 9 is another difficult one to sleuth. My guess is that it's from this album. That would put Ranelin on the trombone.
  12. Pretty much THEE female author of the 90s here in the US meaning the most prominent at the time (at least one of the top selling - her books were literally everywhere). Never read anything by her. Go figure.
  13. Damn. Ok then. Will have to check this out
  14. These guys played together?
  15. Per a Johnny Hodges interview snippet I just read, Johnny says Duke was influenced by Willie Smith, James Johnson and Fats Waller. So I'm guessing he listened to a lot of these guys' records at some point.
  16. This seems off the mark for this forum. First, there's definitely not enough forum members for it to be crawling with anything. Its barely a scamper here. And if there's deeper jazz convos going on elsewhere online I'd love to know. The jazz nerd-ery going on here is the most informative I've found because a decent representation of posters here have lived in that very world in various roles to varying degrees. That kind of experience and knowledge isn't easy to come by on a regular basis. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I would also say the collector tag/avoidance of politics suits the Hoffman boards way better than here. If you've spent any time there in the jazz corners you know what I'm talking about. This forum isn't perfect. Reactionary political views are unfortunately well represented even within this small-ish membership. But if evidence is offered with a coherent and thoughtful editorial, you'll get better results.
  17. A lot of time on the road with Carney driving. They probably listened to a lot of radio.
  18. And a helluva Blue Note album 👍 EVD recorded by RVG - Motown & BN intersection
  19. Track 15 is the Ball and Chain from this album
  20. Track 8 could be the last track on this one Helluva line up if so. Track 6, is it Mal Waldron? Track 10 should be obvious to some folks here. I can't put my finger on it. Jacquet was a good guess but that's not it. Arnett Cobb? Track 11, is it Fred Jackson? YES it is. Song 12 from this Ah, and I have Track 12 as well. This one song # 9 Track 14, is that Art Pepper?
  21. It's definitely sad what happened to Mingus. ALS is awful. Still going through some of his albums here: Interesting cover alternative on this Australian release of Mingusx5. And then the expanded Carnegie Hall set: On the original release, it was only Perdido & C Jam Blues which is unfortunate because the other songs are incredibly strong - well, Pullen's Big Alice is just ok. But the version here of Fables is awesome.
