No worries man, hope you enjoy it and any thoughts appreciated
-
Great info.

Glad you enjoyed it. I honestly thought you'd get 7 quickly. But I've been there too with these BFTs. It's crazy how something you know can still get by you. Both Ackamoor and Sinephro are new discoveries for me too. I think Ackamoor's been around longer but he's under-recorded if anything. This Galper track proved to be unpopular here but I still dig it. No worries man. Thanks for stopping by and glad you dug some of these tunes.

Thanks to everyone who joined in this month. Hope all of the fathers in the group are having a great Father's Day today. Here are the tracks from BFT 219: 1. Clifford Jordan "Sunrise in Mexico" from Starting Time Recorded June 14 & 15, 1961 in New York with Wilbur Ware, Albert Heath, Cedar Walton & Kenny Dorham 2. Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger "Gospel Trane" from Force Majeure Recorded March & June 2020 at each player's apartment in Harlem 3. Paul Bley Trio "Mr. Joy" from Turning Point Recorded in Seattle May 10, 1968 with Gary Peacock & Billy Elgart 4. Billy Taylor "In a Sentimental Mood" from Thank You, Duke! Our Tribute to Duke Ellington from the Arkadia Jazz All-Stars. Released in 1999. 5. Jimmy Lunceford & His Orchestra "Organ Grinder's Swing" from August 31, 1936 I got this from a Giants of Jazz CD comp that I can't find the image for online. This cassette image is close enough. 6. Nathan Davis Quintet "Sconsolato" from Peace Treaty Recorded May 7, 1965 in Paris with Jimmy Woode, Kenny Clarke, Rene Urtreger & Jimmy Gourley on guitar 7. Nala Sinephro "Space 2" from the album Space 1.8 Recorded 2021 with Rudi Creswick on bass, Jake Long on drums, Shirley Tetteh on guitar, Lyle Barton on piano, James Mollison on sax and Nala on synths 8. That JT gig sounds like it’s Taylor-made for single folk. Definitely not a family man set up.

I’m going to post the reveal early next week, a little early but participation is dead. Summertime blues I guess. Hint on 7 is the synth player is the leader, and it’s from their first full length album (and only album at this point). Hint on 11: the leader is from Chicago and goes by an alias. Cheers!

Horace Tapscott Quintet - Unreleased 1969 Flying Dutchman Session

+1 Pretty consistent in the bad sound/good music category. -
Looks like Jazz Dispensery is reissuing the Telecommunication LP. Just saw the announcement on IG.
-
I had no idea about that drama

Not much music theory at all in this book. They do talk a little about chords and Robert’s playing, but mainly to highlight how sophisticated his playing was, which is a testament to Johnson’s work ethic and wood shedding. The authors did yeoman’s work to sketch an accurate depiction of his life and love of music beyond well trodden and unfortunate myths. I’m not well versed in blues history either but again, not needed. The blues history here is related to his life and weaves in nicely to the overall bio for any dedicated or casually interested person to enjoy. I hope that helps.

I dig these guys but have only heard Telecommunication.

Record shopping: different cities’ musical tastes
Dub Modal replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Quick addendum: I have doubts that many country music fans actually buy physical product. It seems to be radio or streaming for that crowd but that’s all anecdotal on my part. -

Trap, R&B and country probably own the ATL market. There’s a ton of local artists and labels there that just seem to dominate airwaves and publicity channels. -
Week 3 bump. Tracks 4,7, 9, 11 & 12 haven’t had any artists ID’d as of yet. Song titles for 4 & 9 have been named. Traffic is way, way down on these last two BFTs for whatever reason. Regardless, some great discussion so far and hoping to keep that up through the reveal. @Pim you’ve got next month’s BFT I see. Feel free to weigh in here if so inclined

Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?
Dub Modal replied to northwood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Re Herman Mosaics, I’d straight up trade my Condon/Freeman set for that Herman Mars box. -
After looking at pics of Swallow online trying to figure this out I think most likely it’s a funky looking electric bass. I don’t know enough about these instruments though so it could be some sort of hybrid, etc. not to mention the effects ECM’s studio could have worked in for that sound here. I was actually going to try and email Swallow to ask him but the only means of communication I could find was a message thru IG and he hasn’t been active there in a few years. No telling if he’d receive it much less answer though. Yeah, that’s it! I love the whole album but knew this track would throw some folks off. It’s the one track that didn’t carry any arrangement or composition credit other than it’s an old Norwegian folk tune - which I thought was cool in and of itself.
-
Nice! Vesala is a beast, and I’m pretty sure I discovered him thru a BFT in the last year or so. This album is killer
-
@mjazzg with that hint from Randy above I bet you can get the album, especially if you approach from the collaborative angle. Also, I really think you can get track 7 too. And damn if George Winston has a duet record with Meryl Streep. Granted she’s reading, but still. The liners note Swallow is playing a bass guitar, which I took to mean an acoustic 4 string guitar rather than stand up contrabass. I’m no expert so please correct me if I’m wrong there.
-
This is a collaborative effort I’d say…and actually, no violin present. Lol, I take it you’re not in the ECM fan club
-
The man has good ears. Color me impressed to.

Yeah, the Mosaic Condon/Freeman Decca/Commodore set. The Freeman material - and really just the trio stuff - is all I really enjoy there. -

I need to check those out. All of the Towner albums I have are older. For the most part, yeah. Once settled in though, I find those albums riveting. His sideman work on that Katche album doesn’t necessarily fit that mold however. -
LaFaro and…gulp, Williams Robert Johnson or Son House?

Manu Katche’s Neighborhood is another good one. From ‘04 with Stanko. Charles Lloyd’s Mirror is damn fine too. A 2009 recording with Jason Moran
