  1. Produce supply here seems a bit choked but extreme weather caused some excessive runs so that may be the reason. And there's low to no staff around to stock at many grocery stores, and so many have cut operating hours. And if you have any appliance that needs repair or need a new appliance you better hope what you need is already in stock. Getting orders shipped for anything like that is a bit like roulette right now.
  2. I agree. I didn't know anything about it but apple music has a decent write-up summary on it (these aren't included with all albums on this platform, so it's nice when one's available). NP. This one escaped me but am listening now after seeing it upthread.
  3. First time listen and it’s awesome
  4. Sun Ra's Other Planes of There and then discs 1-3 of the Hemphill comp from last year.
  5. I hope Max Romeo gets paid when these guys continually use his songs (Prodigy did it too, as did Jay Z).
  6. The mixing described in the first post is what I've always considered "juggling," as reggae selectors have done this for decades. Major labels of that genre such as Greensleeves would issue double LP sets of riddims so that selectors wouldn't go broke or insane from having to get all the 7" singles to string it out. If pressed on music like this I prefer jungle by several miles over typical house. Although a buddy of mine is a house DJ and I do enjoy his mixes.
  7. Whoa...great mix. Boris Gardner followed by Errol Scorcher
  8. I don't think we're in for any kind of CD revival; not until I see CD players for sale at Costco anyway. But the author mentions Heart of the Congos and Lee Scratch Perry so kudos to him for that and the snappy writing through the whole piece. Keep those names and albums in the ether. It does the world a favor.
  9. Rosenwinkel, yes. Pablo Held is probably 90% acoustic
  10. A couple of new piano-led albums here. Pablo Held's is pretty interesting. In a way it's a comp of live shows at the Loft where Held plays with guests that demonstrate a wide variety of influences and styles. He's got a RTF-esque track in "Thorn of A White Rose" mixed in with solo piano and more avant pieces. Good album but it's got a lot of songs and I haven't made my whole way through it yet. Rosenwinkel's new one is solo piano and it's a nice listen. Solo piano works are never my first inclination to hear but this one's nice enough. Anyone else give this a listen yet? I'm hearing some Guaraldi influence but maybe that's my own ears searching for connections....
  11. Thanks for the heads up @Alexander Hawkins - will definitely check it out.
  12. The guitar sound and style kills it for me. Not a fan of the drumming style either.
  13. You may be adverse to social media, I don't know; but Twitter, Instagram and other platforms may be a good way to list without much narrative while generating an audience. And you could connect with the artists that way as well. Just a thought.
  14. Have you written a book or article on this? I find it interesting, and if your efforts help get proper credit and due to the responsible artist(s), then it seems a worthwhile endeavor.
  15. An opinion not shared by everyone. Personally I couldn't care less one way or the other
  16. Have not seen...need to watch.
  17. Nice again. Ini is on this one. I know someone who helped Muta & Ini with an export shipment decades ago. They had nothing but good to say about Muta, but it was exactly the opposite for Ini.
  18. The percentage of folks that could listen blindly and pick out the correct versions without guessing is probably minute to nil.
  19. Great stuff. RIP Robbie Shakespeare
  20. This morning's listen: Spalding's Songwrights Apothecary Lab (SAL) from last year. Man, she takes her witchcraft super seriously. Ok, cool, and it's good that her creativity was supported and all because she's got to have 10 tons of confidence for this type of originality. Kudos to all that. She loves some word play for sure and the listener can sense the spilling over of intelligence on this album. Helluva bass player and composer. Formwela 8 is really the only track I enjoyed here though and it's a simple vamp with some chanting. The rest is outside of my scope but I can appreciate it. I'd definitely go see her live. Why the hell she's on the Concord label I have no idea, but I guess there's some partnership with UMG there at least in distribution. It seems like UMG should make a play to poach and put her on Impulse! or something else in their stable.

  22. Posted a few pages back by another listener, Dave Stryker's As We Are. Giving this one another go and really enjoying it. The string quartet is made up of Marika Hughes on cello, Benni von Gutzeit on viola, and 2 violins from Monica K. Davis & Sara Caswell; with the latter providing several solos throughout. Great compositions and a tranquil mood setting Notes say that Julian Shore did the arrangements for the strings, which makes sense as most of their accents seem to follow the piano.
  23. 60 Minutes or some similar show did a piece on the musicians who recorded Muzak. Maybe it was MTV news? It was decades ago so I don’t remember who produced it but it was interesting and probably on YT somewhere.
