  1. Kane woke up ! Significantly better performance tonight though.
  2. J&R in NYC - I remember that place, not far from the Twin Towers site. Never got beyond the jazz CD section though (impressive in itself).
  3. Looks like SF would be ‘Sonus Faber’ the speaker manufacturer and this is a parts display box with wood finishes available, example parts etc. to use during sales/demos.
  4. Advance issue of this RSD release. The home-recorded sound is more than acceptable and the music intriguing. A few understandable fluffs from some of the band in places as they get their head around the tunes but Taylor (who apparently preferred not to be playing his own work) doesn’t put a foot wrong. In that respect, he reminds me of Monk. This is a valuable new issue - comes with a great Taylor bio booklet and a nice little poster.
  5. Other than a bit of writing on the insert saying ‘BMG Club’ they were the full deal. I recall at the time this deal was North America only and not available in Europe. Twas always thus..
  6. My copy was virtually a freebie - one of those ‘BMG Club’ issues that they used to do in North America back in the 90s to welcome punters into the fold. I think it was 5 CDs for $10 Cdn or something crazy. Good selections on offer too.
  7. I remember ‘The Cutting Edge’ as the current Sonny album on Milestone just as I was getting into jazz, frequently seen in the racks but I only heard it much later.
  8. The trombone style and intonation on track 8 has a hint of 60s Roswell Rudd about it. From one of his Impulse appearances? Having said that, there’s some Mangelsdorffian overtones at times. Track 10 - Would that be Joe Locke on vibes, with Tim Garland on flute and soprano? The vibes have influence of Hutcherson and Burton but I don’t think it’s either of those guys.
  9. Would track 3 be by that Blakey band with Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison and Mulgrew Miller? Track 6 is the Jazz Crusaders ‘Freedom Sound’ I think, on PJ. Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, Stix Hooper. On bass I think it was Jimmy Bond. Track 9 Sonny Rollins ‘A House Is Not A Home’. Wasn’t that one on the ‘Cutting Edge’ album? That would be with Bob Cranshaw, David Lee, Masuo on guitar and Rufus Harley on soprano. There’s a great video version of this one filmed at Ronnie Scott’s.
  10. My copy is a NY mono with double sided deep groove. An unusual combination. Can’t go wrong with a new stylus or retipping !
  11. Interesting to hear Juergen Klinsmann’s views on the BBC commentary. He thought it was pretty evens at half time. Maybe said to keep the locals happy? He’s the best keeper they’ve had for years and - importantly - ups his game for the big occasion. I can remember Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton though, who still set the standard for this team. Banks in particular.
  12. They were neutralised in the second half - very effectively I thought.
  13. Hands up all those who are so ancient that they can remember seeing the last competition win by an England side against this particular national team/nemesis in 1966..
  14. They’ve woken up ! ... and nearly blown it !
  15. Not sure if he influenced Metheny but Volker Kriegel’s albums are real nice, at least the one’s I’ve heard. Particularly like the ones he did for Wolfgang Dauner’s ‘Mood’ Records.
  16. Sunbeam Records (Richard Morton Jack) are just about to issue this limited numbered edition - timed for the forthcoming RSD - on vinyl. Apparently it’s a prototype run of the ‘Pendulum’ session by the Quartet with Dave Tomlin. Comes with booklet and poster apparently - the Don Shinn reissues were so well done by them that I am sure this will be a good one. This has been a very good year for Mike Taylor issues and it promises to get even better when Decca get round to the two Taylor albums (hopefully). Updated - I’ve heard the pre-release. Sound is good for s home recording, the music intriguing and the biographical booklet superb.
  17. Very, very difficult to find in halfway good condition as that sleeve is fragile. Thankfully, not something I was ever after !
  18. Sam signed the cover of my copy of this DMM pressing on the top white bit. Sadly, slightly smudged - although I may try it out in my LP sized picture frame. His favourite of the BN covers (from the horse’s mouth) was ‘A New Conception’. The Mosaic LPs get my vote for best sound - although the twofer is good too. Good stuff. Intriguing mix of jazz big band, Egyptian music and with Souza-type marching band influences in parts. Uncategorisable !
  19. I have that one somewhere in the racks too.
  20. Can’t really go wrong with Stan. He was very consistent - good listening ! Kudos also to his son Clark (fine drummer and bandleader) and Andy Cleyndert for these Resteamed reissues.
  21. The ‘Later Works’ I can confirm is a really good 2CD set with the Octet. I actually saw Stan and the Octet play the Hong Kong Suite around 2010-ish, one of the last times I saw him. In fact I think they played both of the suites. I have both of those LPs featured in ‘From Stan With Love’ and they are great. In fact, the Ellington tribute was also televised by BBC and should be accessible for viewing via the Internet (hopefully) - one of the featured artists is Joe Harriott (in his only TV performance known to survive). Check out also the Resteamed reissue of ‘Alice In Jazzland’ with the Big Brass. Another good one.
  22. With ease. Have just given ‘Plantation Bag’ another spin, no issues noted.
  23. From the Henderson Mosaic box
