I have a copy of the Capitol CD and from memory I think it was in mono - will have to check. It was a fairly grainy sound, as I recall (I think it was one of those ‘Collectors Choice’ issues so probably a limited run). Also have that stereo UA LP, which I will have to dig out, if I can find it.
I’ve always avoided those Trip reissues like the plague. For a period, they were ubiquitous.
Also put out in the UK on the budget DJM label, along with ‘Kawaida’. Another odd label.
DJM also did an Eric Dolphy ‘Memorial Album’ with the Jitterbug Walz material (a copy of which I still have).
I had a similar reaction in the old ‘Recommended Records’ in Earls Court, London. Went in once, didn’t buy anything and never went back. Unbenownest to me, somewhere in that shop, they stocked Sun Ra Saturn direct from the horse’s mouth.
That was definitely the strangest vinyl shop I ever went in. Totally out of kilter with the rest, at that time. Zero bop content that I could see.
This is sad news. I remember hearing his hits a lot on the radio and seeing him on TV in the late 60s, then he seemed to drop off the chart. More high profile here in the UK over the past couple of decades, with a ‘Meltdown’ Festival dedicated to him and an interesting BBC 4 documentary some time back. Lots of support to UK jazz musicians such as Ray Warleigh and Terry Smith in the early days, producing early records by them. Didn’t realise either that he’d been a UK citizen since 1970. Certainly one of a kind and a unique talent - RIP.
My copy of this one by Bill Potts is the same issue. Pretty OK sonics - I think this is one of those where the master tapes were lost for the CD reissue.
Surprised that they weren’t vapourised..
Radio Shack pretty well disappeared over here too. The local equivalent, Maplin, went bust last year. Very expensive but useful source of electronic parts in an emergency.
Golson, Farmer, Blakey, Griffin, H. Jones, Rollins and Gillespie. Wish there were more..
Probably also caught Milt Hinton, will have to check. Ernie Wilkins as well I think.
I have Hawk’s, Jimmy Jones’ and Horace’s autographs, if that counts?
