  1. Possibly acquired via Scott (or the others) 1940s stint with ‘Geraldo’s Navy’? If so - of historical significance as that was one of the main conduits through which bop was channelled to the UK !
  2. Hopefully not an original Atlantic mono or UK London ! Cats are barred chez moi..
  3. Cranked up - sounds great ! Same here ! Much prefer the Candid.
  4. Yep - ‘Picadilly Lilly’ is the biz. Great set and strong playing all round !
  5. Hope they can arrange some tours. I would cross the Atlantic just to see that place.
  6. This Jazzman compilation is worth getting. I have the 2LP version.
  7. Mole’s vinyl was never the greatest on the whole so I can well believe that the DIW versions rock !
  8. That was on Hot House Records, part of the Mole Jazz empire. I have a vinyl of it. Very nice reissue - with added plus of Nathan Davis’ recollections in the notes.
  9. Very sad news - RIP Dr Davis. A very fine player. I remember that ‘Paris Reunion Band’ European tour but never got to see it. Yes, Kenny Clarke was involved from my recollection. I have at least one LP by them in my collection from a European label.
  10. I agree - it is a fairly run of the mill session.
  11. It was a Real Gone Music/Dusty Groove Issue. They also put out a Prestige CD by Stan Hunter and Sonny Fortune (his first session).
  12. The nearest equivalent that comes to mind is RRK’s ‘Slightly Latin’. Both left field albums with MOR touches from about the same late 60s vintage with the vocal backing. Both are great (IMO anyway). Dusty Groove did a nice job with the ‘Musart’ reissue.
  13. Indeed !
  14. Thanks for that - I’ll pick up the Land then, even though I have a vinyl of it. Here’s hoping that they put out lots more of the Mainstream label, including the other Buddy Terrys. The reception for the first two (and the compilations) has been positive, so the omens are good. The sound of these sessions is very NYC 1972/73/74 and reminds me of the general sound and vibe of e.g. the Elvin Jones Blue Notes of that period. A bit ‘woolly’ with loads of reverb. The Buddy Terry has been on pretty steady replay today - love it !
  15. Who was ‘Onkel Po’ anyway?
  16. Yes - It was right after the re-furb. I can recall the difference those wood baffles made at the back of the stage. You are correct - he entered dancing and reciting - and I think he either had hand shaker bells or they were attached to his jump suit at the ankles. Quite the entrance and good to be reminded of all this. I missed the one with Dixon and Oxley. It might have been a few years earlier. If I’d been in London I would have gone for sure. 2004 sounds about right.
  17. If my memory is correct, Cecil did a sort of dance/jig as he was invited onto the stage in his white outfit then recited poetry. On one of those tunes the intensity with Braxton on contra bass saxophone was such that their was the perception they were all collectively levitating. At least that was my thought at the time ! A quick search on youtube confirms that a short video of that performance is on there. Braxton switches from the big sax to sopranino (?) which increases the intensity. Amazing stuff.
  18. The Apatow reissue of ‘Awakening’ doesn’t sound too bad sonically at all. Having said that, none of these Mainstreams was ever the greatest in that respect. It sounds like master tapes were probably were used. For their Harold Land issue, my understanding is that the master couldn’t be located so presumably that impacts the Japanese issue of that one too.
  19. Just recalled that last time I saw him was at London QEH with that amazing quartet with Anthony Braxton, William Parker and Tony Oxley. If I remember correctly, a bit of his poetry was featured too. Part of the London Jazz Festival, 2007 I think. Before that was at much closer vantage with a couple of solo recitals in LA’s Jazz Bakery. That was pretty intense.
  20. Just picked up a copy of the Apatow Buddy Terry ‘Awakening’. Definite hints of Strata-East.
  21. ‘Apatow’ reissue. Just picked up a copy this afternoon.
