  1. That recording of 'Perdido' was actually done in LA for the 'Frankly Jazz' show, I believe. I have it on tape.
  2. Woops. Typing too fast !
  3. Good reminder. I'll dig this Mosaic out tonight.
  4. It was in the Med, off the North Coast of Sardinia. Just saw the reaction of the diver when he put his hand on it (looked like a mini epileptic fit - no 'zap' visible from the ray). Painfull but not too dangerous. Before the dive he was mouthing off about how great a diver he was - this shut him up. The real 'nasty' though is the stone fish, which you get in the Red Sea. Stand on one of those and you can be dead within 30 minutes from herat failure. Incidentally, the electric ray is not that big - sort of like a small 'squarish' sting ray and with a speckled pattern on its back. Quite distinctive. As for stingrays, we sometimes get them off the UK coast and they seem to be prolific in the warm water at the outlets of nuclear power stations on the SE coast !
  5. The rays must have turned on mankind ! Incidentally, in the past I have often swum on scuba dives over very sedentary sting rays, without any hassle from them whatsoever. They usually like to camouflage themselves in the sand and hide away and often only their faint impression in the sand gives them away. I once saw an idiot diver get zapped by an electric ray however. Served him right..
  6. A (late) Many Happy Returns ! Have enjoyed your LP sleevenotes over the years immendely !
  7. And VG- ! (must be trashed)
  8. 'Sonny Rollins Vol 2' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  9. Wow ! Maybe I'll see mine tomorrow?
  10. Yes, that is the UK Fontana cover. If I recall, this one is compiled from two sessions - side 1 has tracks from 'What The Dickens' and side 2 tracks from a slightly later session.
  11. That's a very good LP. Fine sampling of some of Lee Morgan's best on Blue Note.
  12. Excuses, excuses! We know you were in there, telling yourself secrets. MG
  13. I like 'em too !
  14. Horace Silver Quintet 'The Tokyo Blues' (BN NY USA mono). The perfect accompaniment to reading his book !
  15. I thought it was the result of a long-term 'personal habit'. Damn shame, such a fine player.
  16. Bl**dy crazy ! I'd stick with the King and splurge on 30-40 Mosaics and some top class gigs with the change.
  17. Happy birthday from me too !
  18. Good move ! That's a nice disk.
  19. Mine's being shipped, along with the Max set. I had a partial but really wanted a box and booklet before they run out !
  20. 'The Incredible Jimmy Smith Vol 1' (BN NY USA mono). Non-deep groove 'RVG' pressing. Sounds pretty good !
  21. Up for this thread. I finally got round to checking out the sound on the LPs and as a precaution I put the entire set through the VPI beforehand. Sound overall seems pretty good to me - although the studio sessons have hardly any stereo separation (if any) apparent. Doesn't sound at all bad. The stereo separation only starts to become noticeable with the live Birdland tracks.
  22. Yes, Happy Birthday !
  23. I think you will find the 'Chronicle' more than acceptable, Yves. The music, of course, is a joy from beginning to end.
  24. That would be the 'Chronicle' set, right? I have that one without the box and booklet - LPs in plain white card sleeves marked up by hand and sold to me in a sale by the late lamented 'Mole Jazz' many moons ago. I would say that the sound quality is comparable to OJCs of that vintage. They are not thick vinyl but are thin pressings like the OJCs. Sound is very acceptable. From my experience the Prestige 1st and 2nd pressings on Bergenfield and 50th St NYC sound better though - more 'presence' and 'body'. The challenge though will be to find these at lowish cost and in good condition (indeed a challenge these days in the UK ). Another option would be to pick up the 24000 series Fantasy twofers of Miles Prestige work - 'Miles Davis', 'Collectors Items', 'Working & Steamin' etc. Again, these are very acceptable sound-wise and can be picked up for not many £. I have a few of these and am more than happy with them. There's also the limited audiophile box of the Miles Quintet material put out by Analogue Productions. Not cheap and long out of print - but has been praised highly both on this board and the old BN board (I've never heard this one). Incidentally, if you check out their site it shows that they currently have some 45rpm releases of the Quintet material for sale ( ).
