MICHAEL S. WIRTZ / Inquirer / Members of the American Accordionists' Association rehearse for their performance at Independence Mall today. Fifty of the musicians, in town for their group's 65th anniversary, will play "The Pennsylvania Polka" at noon. "Accordions at high noon Not chic, certainly not geek" By Karen Heller Inquirer Staff Writer You haven't experienced life fully until you've heard Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" performed on two accordions. That's what Just Du-et!, Dee Langley and Greg Dagoumas of Minneapolis, played during the fish and chicken at the American Accordionists' Association's 65th anniversary luncheon yesterday at the Airport Marriott. ... http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/fr...ont/6277299.htm

Actually, after late-night gigs, Duke used to relax over a nice drink of hot cocoa. This mispelling to "Ko-Ko" resulted from an error by the copywrite office.

I've heard that the Garner estate has been very hard to deal with... Through the Summer and Fall, Columbia/Legacy is doing reissues of Monk, Ellington, Santana, Getz, Count Basie and ... Miles Davis. (See my site for more details.
-
And on the Stan Getz question: this one's coming out soon with bonus tracks, so maybe that estate issue is more resolved? Stan Getz - Captain Marvel (Columbia/Legacy) Aug 5 -- with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Tony Williams -- with two unissued altnernates and one unissued tune ("Crystal Silence"); liner notes by Chick Corea

Anyone heard these new reissues? Ahmad Jamal - Live in Paris, 1996 (Dreyfus) July 8 -- with George Coleman; Jeff Chambers; Yoron Israel; Calvin Keys Ahmad Jamal - Live in Paris, 1992 (Dreyfus/Verve) July 8 Ahmad Jamal - Nature: The Essence, Part 3 (Dreyfus/Atlantic) -- with Idris Muhammad; Stanley Turrentine; Othello Molineaux; from 1998

Jarman is with them again, although I don't think they'll be playing together that frequently since they live in different areas now. The group has recently recorded two albums (with Jarman) for Pi that'll be out this year. There will also be an ECM album that was recorded a year or two ago (without Jarman) as a tribute to Lester. I believe the group will be playing at the Chicago Jazz Festival at the end of the summer.

Wow! A dedicated drawing board ($7.95)... ...might work better for art projects than a Mosaic box!...

Bombastic! -
But, seriously, the manzello is a descendent of the saxello, which is basically a slightly curved soprano sax, also in Bb. [source is this Russian page on Rahsaan.]

Most interesting/favorite James Spaulding context
alankin replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
It's out-of-print, as are his three other Muse recordings. (I especially liked "Brilliant Corners.") Savoy now owns Muse; perhaps they'll reissue some of these. (Shameless plug: I may have extras of a couple of his Muse titles.) -
Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay" - an epic novel of the 1930's & 40s and the birth of the comic book industry. I'm about 100 pages into it. I like the part where the cousin helps smuggle the Golem out of Prague...

Could have been 'leaders' on their own BN dates???
alankin replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I've wondered about James Spaulding, who certainly was on enough Blue Note dates as a side man. Maybe he wasn't doing enough writing, though... -
I liked "The Turbanator." Here's a link to review I wrote: home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/Reviews/R0009i.html Dr. Lonnie also has an new album coming out the end of next month that's an album of Beck covers, called "Boogaloo to Beck"!

Is this two disc version new or old?

It's funny--in my experience, there are quite a lot of saxophone players who tend to dismiss players like Getz or even Mobley out of hand when it comes to trying to shape their own sound. The norm these days seems to be to pursue the big sounds of a Rollins or Coltrane or Brecker. I had an obnoxious band director in high school who really discouraged kids from trying to sound like anything other than those thick-toned players. God forbid that a young musician try to develop his own voice.
