This past Wednesday I was fortunate to see Johnny E's Reptet in Cleveland. Whoever said to go see/hear them is absolutely right. What a unique group.....the various styles in their music....wonderful compositions that took full advantage of talented multi instrumentalists who really smoked!....not to mention great Johnny E vocals on what I think was their new single. It was also nice for me to meet and talk a bit to Johnny and two members of the group. It's a pleasure for the audience to hear musicians who obviously, based on their compositions and playing, take their music seriously but have fun at the same time. Goin' to the fish market!

Newbury bargain thread (and bargains in general)
TedR replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
No Jim, it's still there at 1.99. I'm sorry I've never linked but if you go to amazon, select the music category, search "sal nistico" and the Heavyweights/comin on up cd is first on the list. -

Here are our pups (cavalier spaniels Cleo and Rusty) after jumping all over our guests and rough housing with each other. They are truly best friends except for the occasional disagreement over a favorite toy.

Something's Happening Here/What It Is Ain't Exactly Clear
TedR replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No other odd happenings here. It's a newer house built in 2005 in a newer housing development started in 2002 on what was a currant vineyard. Neither of us knows anything about the Wiccan faith or practice of witchcraft. My wife is a painter with a folk art style so I do buy her art books periodically one of which was called Fairy Art, a beautifully illustrated book of 19th and 20th century fairy painting (which, btw, we keep on the same hutch that the toy was found on ). -

Well this is just a little bit weird. My wife and I have two puppies. A few days ago Cleo's favorite toy, a medium size stuffed hedgehog squeak toy, went missing. It happens.....so I kept looking under beds, couches, out in the open (sometimes you look at something and don't see it and then you do)..... Then, yesterday, I read Dan's experiences. Okay it wouldn't hurt to try (as long as no one hears me) so I asked the fairies to return Cleo's favorite toy. I looked around....no toy until I saw it in the middle of an open shelf on the living room hutch. Could I have absent mindedly put it there hidden in plain sight? My wife says no because she dusted those shelves yesterday morning and, if there was a dog toy there, it would have gone into the toy basket or thrown to the dogs to play with. Probably a logical explanation but still....... -
A positive comment regarding Oldies: Twice (out of maybe 60 cds ordered) they shipped the wrong cd. I sent each cd back paying for my own postage. When the credit came through it included the price of the cd and the postage I paid. That shows they have integrity dealing with customers.

Not that you asked for suggestions but I kinda like "Lowe Down Blues" as a title....or just "Lowe Down". Sounds like some great sessions.

Worlds Records deals on Jazz Oracle/Heps
TedR replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have the Venuti/Lang Mosaic and the Eddie Condon Classic Recordings JSP. These both have quite a bit of Red McKenzie. Is it still worth getting the Sensation discs for additional material? Great sale on those and the Irving Mills. -
I don't know. Jack is still listed as a member of the orchestra. Could he be stepping down to concentrate on teaching?

Read an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he will be the new director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.

order arrived today in great shape and as advertised!

Listened to disc 2 today. Lon was right. In very good sound. Believe it or not, most of these recordings and compositions are new to me so it's a thrill to hear them for the first time. "One by One" got me to get my trumpet out and play along with the staccato theme. That had to be a fun one for them to play. And I believe it was "Blue Calypso" with it's great theme and intriguing drum breaks, etc, etc. Looking forward to the Red Garland sessions next. The only one I have is All Morning Long. I have most of the Coltrane leader dates on individual cds so the Interplay and Side Step boxes give me lots to explore. Thanks again for the heads up on the Best Buy sale/giveaway or whatever it should be called.

Which book did you buy today?
TedR replied to save0904's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Based on recommendations from this forum I bought Hampton Hawes autobiography from oldies.com. Just shipped with some other Fantasy sale cds. $4.95 in paperback. -
My copy of Side Steps just arrived today. I put on disc 1 which includes Informal Jazz and Mating Call. I like the packaging and the booklet but I do hope the sound on the other discs is better than on disc 1. Mating Call especially sounded poor. I thought maybe my speakers were having a problem suddenly (Magneplanars). So I put on an older remastered disc that I was recently impressed with (Walt Dickerson's Sense of Direction) to check. It still sounds great. And I thought the Interplay box also sounded very good. Were these particular sessions poorly recorded? I've been surprised how good other mid/late 50's RVG Prestige recordings sound. Not disc 1 anyway.

That sure was quick delivery. Where do they ship from? Mine hasn't arrived yet but the tracking confirmation said it shipped priority mail.

I have a number of these sessions too and enjoy all of them. I'm still kicking myself for not getting Katanga (sp?).

The guy that put this street musician project together was a guest on the Colbert Report a few months back and Grandpa Elliot performed. -
Is it some sort of marketing strategy then? Word of mouth publicity? Maybe Concord knows they won't sell as many as they had to manufacture. I ordered one too. Tremendous value for me since I only have two of the sessions included in the set.
