Miles Davis Complete Blackhawk

I like it a LOT. Originally had the 2LP set, and was excited when the 4CD set came out. I think it has a great 'club vibe' to it and the performances are inspired. I think the knock on it is mostly about Mobley. Needless to say, he's not as adventurous as Trane or Shorter, but for me that doesn't matter. -
I remember seeing him with Art Blakey way back when. One of Art's under-rated groups, I think. Valery was good in the ensemble, which also had Bobby Watson and David Schnitter.

On the afternoon of the 15th I might try to check out this at the Stone: John Zorn's Bagatelles: Uri Caine, John Medeski

Anything you recommend for Nov 13-15? I'm planning to see the Mingus Big Band at Jazz Standard on the 16th.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

I just saw on Twitter that Sean Jones wrote a tune called "Franklin and Fell" - very appropriate! I'm sure that part of the traffic problem was that Elvis Costello was across the street at the Nourse Theater doing an interview for his new book. -
Some great scatting on this tune. I first heard him on this album. I was hooked right away with this tune.

I'm a BIG fan - especially his albums on Muse, and specifically "Mark Murphy Sings" (a must-have for jazz vocal fans, IMO). I saw him several times in the late 70's/early 80's when he lived in the Bay Area. He had a regular gig in a bar in Tiburon for a while, too. I saw him several years after that and it seemed like he had fallen into relying on some mannerisms that took away from his appeal as a singer I thought, and probably didn't help his career. RIP, Mark!

Maybe I should point out that I am referring to the guitar playing or guitar solos. I do not mean that Sharrock's band included timbales or that they performed anything that sounded like Black Magic Woman, etc. That's what I was trying to say in my original comment. It's more apparent on High Life than Ask the Ages, though.

Have a great one, David. Listen to some Freddie!

It IS a great set. I you like it that much, you might want to consider this to go along with it. Henry Threadgill - The Complete Remastered Black Saint/Soul Note Recordings -

FB not required it would seem . Fun indeed. I've only ever seen this band once, about ten years ago, and the thing that stood out most for me on the night was Blade. He did something very similar that night too Interesting! He IS a pretty aggressive drummer, so I can see why it might not be the first time that happened. -

Here's a VERY entertaining 2 1/2 minutes of Brian Blade from the Wayne Shorter show I saw on Friday. You might have to be on Facebook to see it. -

I saw the Wayne Shorter Quartet there tonight, BFrank. They are obviously a very cohesive group playing challenging music with much sincerity and commitment, and I'm glad to have seen them perform, but I must admit the music did not always connect with me. It was the first concert I'd seen in the Miner Auditorium. A very nice venue, indeed, with very good acoustics. Even the cheap seats in the balcony are good. I will be back there next week to see the SF JAZZ Collective's concert featuring the music of Michael Jackson. I saw the show tonight and now I know what you're saying about Wayne. I thought the first half of the show was a little unfocused and Wayne seemed to be having trouble getting going on tenor sax. He played very little and when he did he was almost playing in a whisper. You could hardly hear him, especially when the band opened up and played more intensely. He seemed to find himself by switching to soprano during the second half. -
Forget the Santana influence........I was thinking of Highlife.

They can get out there sometimes, but I enjoy their interactions and the high level of communication. While you were enjoying Wayne, I was seeing the Collective in the Joe Henderson Lab. Great to see them in such a small venue, and they seemed to enjoy that, too. Not seeing their Miner shows next week, though. -
Definitely a great album, with some Santana overtones.

Tomorrow: SFJAZZ Collective performing selections from Joe Henderson's "Page One" in SFJAZZ's intimate 'Joe Henderson Lab'. Friday: Wayne Shorter Quartet in SFJAZZ Miner Auditorium. -
I don't have a problem with it being made, I just don't think I need to see it. I like Don Cheadle and I think this is his personal project. I hope it does well.

Biopics rarely live up to the hype, IMO. I'd rather watch a doc.

End of an era. I know the kids are taking over the "business," but she was instrumental in keeping the work honest.

Great deal on Threadgill. If you like him and don't already have most of those albums, then it's a no-brainer.
