  1. Interesting. I would think that Soft Machine would fit into this list, too.
  2. "Monterey" "Monterrey" is in Mexico. Sorry.......couldn't resist. Here's a recent NPR review by Kevin Whitehead Revisiting The Intense Twists And Turns Of Garner's 'Concert By The Sea'
  3. Sounds interesting. I'd like to hear it, too.
  4. Her bassist brother Viktor has 2 fantastic solo albums out: "Far From Enough" and "II". They're largely instrumental and very diverse in a "Bill Frisell" sort of way. Lots of guests on those albums too, including Frisell, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Douglas and others. Speaking of Robt Plant, he does an interesting cover of "Big Log" on the first album.
  5. Just about any Phineas Newborn Jr album. Every one I've heard is very good.
  6. Pretty outrageous version of Moanin'
  7. mid-80's here in SF today. Supposed to be a major "El Nino" this winter, which means lots of rain. I'll believe it when I see it.
  8. Wow - GREAT deal on that Hodges set! NP: Disk 4
  9. Max Roach (Newport 67) with Tolliver, Cowell, Odean Pope I just listened to that one the other day. Outstanding!
  10. Thanks for that suggestion. After quick online sampling I've ordered a copy. Sounds very tasty Yes, it is. I didn't know it was available on CD. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I don't think it is. I bought an LP I did a quick search and there are CDs, but imports (from a U.S. perspective, anyway). I have the vinyl, too, but my records are stored away.

  12. If you can find "Equipose" w/Cecil McBee and Roy Haynes, that's a great trio album. Of course, his sideman work with Charles Tolliver and on Max Roach's "Members, Don't Git Weary" are must-haves, too.
  13. I've seen Richard a bunch, too. He's never boring, that's for sure! This was the last time I saw him - at SXSW in 2013. I actually saw him 3 times that year! He tours here regularly so I catch him every 2 or 3 years. His music has been with me since around 1971 so it's a bit like seeing an old school friend! 3 times in a year - that is dedication! Well, yes and no (about the dedication) ... all 3 events were at SXSW. Besides this show with his trio, there was a songwriting interview and a solo acoustic show.
  14. Thanks Bev, I'll check it out.

  16. Decided at the last minute to go see Chick Corea, Christian McBride and Brian Blade. Glad I did. It's been MANY years since I've seen Chick and this reminded me of what a great and inventive piano player he is. He doesn't try to overwhelm you with his technique, but the effortlessness of his playing tells you all you need to know. The trio has obviously been playing together for quite a while as the interplay was pretty amazing, but they're ALL masters, so I guess that's to be expected. Glad I saw this and need to get back into Chick's world a little bit.
  17. I've met a couple of bassoon players for the SF Symphony. Interesting characters.
  18. Anyone have thoughts on the later Pentangle albums? I've been listening to Open the Door, In the Round and So Early in the Spring a lot lately. Although somewhat different from the original lineup and albums, I think they're well done.
  19. Hey -- at least both you and Tony Bennett are still around! Yes...........there's THAT!
  20. "Rags to Riches" by Tony Bennett You were born 32,482,731 mins ago!! YIKES!
  21. Here's some art! Jon Langford & Steve Wynn Art & Music & 20 Years of Yard Dog
  22. That's a GREAT collection of albums, but twice that price on my Amazon page. BF, take a look below the Amazon price box...It says, "35 New from $11.77." Oh, right. Thanks!

  24. There's an LA band called Eleventh Dream Day that falls into this category. They've had an on-and-off career but have continued to put out albums on a fairly regular basis since 1988. Here they are at SXSW in 2011 BTW, here's the Baseball Project (Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn, Linda Pitmon [Steve's wife] and Peter Buck) at the same event.
