  1. Unfortunately 'big game' hunting happens all the time, it just usually doesn't make the news. I see posts on FB with pictures like this of creeps with their dead elephants, giraffes, puma cougars more often than I care to think. I'm glad this has sparked such a big outcry, though. Maybe it will make these people stop and think about what they're doing (but I doubt it).
  2. Friday - not jazz: Ray Wylie Hubbard w/special guest Bob Livingston Freight & Salvage, Berkeley
  3. I have 10: 1) Grachan Moncur III 2) Carmell Jones 4) Randy Weston 6) John Patton 7) Curtis Amy 16) Andrew Hill 20) Charles Tolliver 24) Tony Williams 26) Bobby Hutcherson 33) Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabakin
  4. It might have something to do with the overall depressed market for CDs, too.
  5. Well, it IS part of the "Bootleg Series."
  6. I was just noticing how few Selects and Singles are still available. It's too bad because I think both had their place in the Mosaic catalog, but I guess they just weren't profitable. In the meantime I ordered Art Farmer "The Time And The Place." I didn't realize how special that album was until I read the blurb, and that music probably won't be available again once it's gone. I haven't heard any of it, but look forward to getting it.
  7. Carmell Jones Select, disk 1 I always forget how good this set is!
  8. I can't imagine seeing Miles at the KK. It was such a SMALL club and must have been amazing to be there. Having said that, I was very fortunate to have seen many other great artists there from 1974-82.
  9. Here's an image of Miles at the KK from Todd's website
  10. 1970 Peter Green edition live sets. Although issued before, I've heard great things about the remastering of this stuff.
  11. I wonder if Todd Barkan owns all the Keystone Korner tapes.
  12. I had no idea! I frequently buy CDs at shows because I assumed that all the money goes to the artist. I guess they still get more than through retail, but it doesn't seem right.
  13. I forget ... in PayPal do we send to 'friend of family' or 'good or service'?
  14. Hilton Ruiz!
  15. FYI - that set is ALL good! After hearing the Cowell/Houston/Barbaro tracks for the first time last night, I definitely agree. I actually picked it up without even knowing who was on it, so I'm glad that my blind faith was rewarded. For being a live collection, both bassists were recorded particularly well, which is a blessing given how strong McBee and Houston are. My only Tolliver-led date that I owned before picking up the Mosaic Select was With Love, so I think that I made a great decision in picking up this set. Those original Slugs albums were the first I heard of Tolliver, and became a huge fan after that. Still some of my favorite music.
  16. One possible way of getting that one is to buy a Miles 'Trumpet Case' box from Popsike when a good deal comes up on it, trade the rest of it and keep the 'On The Corner' box ! One possible way of getting that one is to buy a Miles 'Trumpet Case' box from Popsike when a good deal comes up on it, trade the rest of it and keep the 'On The Corner' box ! That's actually a brilliant idea. The Trumpet Case set can be gotten for $425 on ebay right now, where the Corener box is going for $220 on Amazon. But I'll wait and hope for a relatively low price reissue at some point. That trumpet case is $450 on PopMarket right now, but I think I've seen it there for less. (I want to say around $300, but can't confirm that)
  17. How about Phineas Newborn? Probably not overlooked on this board, but certainly by the mainstream.
  18. You're right, I should probably go. Especially since it's VERY near me! BTW, here's the lineup from the website: Catherine Russell, vocals Matt Munisteri, guitar Mark Shane, piano Tal Ronen, bass
  19. good point. I sorta/kinda knew Mark in the late 70s. he came to the record store where I worked.
  20. I think I saw somewhere that Billy performed with his quintet recently and she was in it.
  21. Mine shipped today - should arrive tomorrow.
  22. Pleased he's still active. Saw him a looong time ago - with Max Roach in the 60s and Woody Shaw in the 70s. I'm jealous - have never seen him. I REALLY would have liked to see the Strata East reunion in London earlier this year! STRATA EAST LIVE SOUNDS SUBLIME AT BARBICAN Cowell and Tolliver are clearly long-term associates. They were both in that Roach group I saw in the late 60s - along with Odean Pope and Jymie Merritt. To turn the clock forward a good deal, Harper and McBee from the Strata East gig also toured with The Cookers which I saw at The Sage, Gateshead in April. Wouldn't have been Pope in that Roach group. He was still here in Philly playing with Catalyst. Pope and Tyrone Brown (who belongs on the list of overlooked bass players) from Catalyst ended up with Roach a couple of decades later. Cecil Bridgewater completed the 80's Roach quartet. Gary Bartz was on the Roach album with Tolliver/Cowell/Merritt. It certainly was Pope. Roach made a point of drawing attention to what he called the "old English names" of his group, suggesting a complicity in slavery on the part of the English audience. The first time I ever saw Roach or Billy Harper was with that great quartet in 1977 at the Keystone Korner. I saw Max a handful of times after that (incl w/Odean) and still see Billy whenever I can. The Cookers most recently; probably 4-5 times total. "Members, Don't Git Weary" is a great album - but much too short!
