  1. It IS a great set. I you like it that much, you might want to consider this to go along with it. Henry Threadgill - The Complete Remastered Black Saint/Soul Note Recordings
  2. FB not required it would seem . Fun indeed. I've only ever seen this band once, about ten years ago, and the thing that stood out most for me on the night was Blade. He did something very similar that night too Interesting! He IS a pretty aggressive drummer, so I can see why it might not be the first time that happened.
  3. Here's a VERY entertaining 2 1/2 minutes of Brian Blade from the Wayne Shorter show I saw on Friday. You might have to be on Facebook to see it.
  4. I saw the Wayne Shorter Quartet there tonight, BFrank. They are obviously a very cohesive group playing challenging music with much sincerity and commitment, and I'm glad to have seen them perform, but I must admit the music did not always connect with me. It was the first concert I'd seen in the Miner Auditorium. A very nice venue, indeed, with very good acoustics. Even the cheap seats in the balcony are good. I will be back there next week to see the SF JAZZ Collective's concert featuring the music of Michael Jackson. I saw the show tonight and now I know what you're saying about Wayne. I thought the first half of the show was a little unfocused and Wayne seemed to be having trouble getting going on tenor sax. He played very little and when he did he was almost playing in a whisper. You could hardly hear him, especially when the band opened up and played more intensely. He seemed to find himself by switching to soprano during the second half.
  5. Forget the Santana influence........I was thinking of Highlife.
  6. WNYC Presents In Association with Lumiere Productions THE JAZZ LOFT ACCORDING TO GENE SMITH WNYC's Jazz Loft documentary film is in final stages of post-production

They can get out there sometimes, but I enjoy their interactions and the high level of communication. While you were enjoying Wayne, I was seeing the Collective in the Joe Henderson Lab. Great to see them in such a small venue, and they seemed to enjoy that, too. Not seeing their Miner shows next week, though.
  8. Definitely a great album, with some Santana overtones.
  9. Tomorrow: SFJAZZ Collective performing selections from Joe Henderson's "Page One" in SFJAZZ's intimate 'Joe Henderson Lab'. Friday: Wayne Shorter Quartet in SFJAZZ Miner Auditorium.
  10. I don't have a problem with it being made, I just don't think I need to see it. I like Don Cheadle and I think this is his personal project. I hope it does well.
  11. Biopics rarely live up to the hype, IMO. I'd rather watch a doc.
  12. End of an era. I know the kids are taking over the "business," but she was instrumental in keeping the work honest.
  13. Sounds WAY too convenient to pass up!
  14. Great deal on Threadgill. If you like him and don't already have most of those albums, then it's a no-brainer.
  15. Interesting. I would think that Soft Machine would fit into this list, too.
  16. "Monterey" "Monterrey" is in Mexico. Sorry.......couldn't resist. Here's a recent NPR review by Kevin Whitehead Revisiting The Intense Twists And Turns Of Garner's 'Concert By The Sea'
  17. Sounds interesting. I'd like to hear it, too.
  18. Her bassist brother Viktor has 2 fantastic solo albums out: "Far From Enough" and "II". They're largely instrumental and very diverse in a "Bill Frisell" sort of way. Lots of guests on those albums too, including Frisell, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Douglas and others. Speaking of Robt Plant, he does an interesting cover of "Big Log" on the first album.
  19. Just about any Phineas Newborn Jr album. Every one I've heard is very good.
  20. Pretty outrageous version of Moanin'
  21. mid-80's here in SF today. Supposed to be a major "El Nino" this winter, which means lots of rain. I'll believe it when I see it.
  22. Wow - GREAT deal on that Hodges set! NP: Disk 4
  23. Max Roach (Newport 67) with Tolliver, Cowell, Odean Pope I just listened to that one the other day. Outstanding!
  24. Thanks for that suggestion. After quick online sampling I've ordered a copy. Sounds very tasty Yes, it is. I didn't know it was available on CD. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. I don't think it is. I bought an LP I did a quick search and there are CDs, but imports (from a U.S. perspective, anyway). I have the vinyl, too, but my records are stored away.
