What survives of Todd Barkan's private recordings
marcello replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
Re: Dizzy' Recordings, A single night is recorded at each week long engagement so that the music can be edited down to a broadcast on XM Radio. About Todd's archives: I'm sure that he takes care to get proper releases from any musician or estate. There are recordings that have been issued on Theresa Records like: There was also a Keystone Berkley, where there was a more blues/soul programing. Here's a poster of the original Keystone Korner I found: -
Tom, I saw Joe Locke yesterday, and you must have misheard or misunderstood him, as he doesn't remember the conversation. I also went to hear Kenny Baron tonight, and talked to him between concerts, and he still lives in Brooklyn in Ditmas Park.

The billing on "Something New" (Interplay Records) from 1979 is the Same Jones 12 Piece Band. Harrell is not in the group, but I've always assumed the book and sound of this band was essentially the same as when Harrell had co-billing. Is that right, or was there a substantial difference between the groups? Re: Jones on record. Jones steals the show on Blue Mitchell's "Blue's Moods," partly because for some reason the bass is recorded really, really clear on that record. and you can hear every nuance of his sound, time and note-choice. Mark, I haven't heard "Something New", but will look for it. I would assume that with the expanded personnel, the arrangements and maybe the charts are different. I have a tape I made of a few songs.

That would take up too much space here. Here's a photo: Charles, Vinnie & Philly Joe Drums, Vinnie Ruggiero; trombone, Benjamin Jacobs-El; bass, Butch Warren. Others and location unknown. Circa 1962, NYC.

"Something In Common" is great, but I fondly remember the short lived Tom Harrell-Sam Jones Big Band, that didn't record. Here's on of my photos with Sam Jones along with Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton and Ben Riley. That the infamous Vinnie Ruggiero on the left, by the way:

You may want to consider Dena DeRose and Bill Stewart for the program. No secrets there.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
marcello replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Last night I heard only the first song of the Soweto Kinch Quartet . It was all I could stand. Later I heard a set of Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts with Martin Wind on bass Gary Versace on piano, Hammond, piano and accordion and Terrell Stafford on trumpet. A typical fun set with some real nifty brush work by Matt. Tonight, mostly it will be the Arild Andersen Trio with Tommy Smith on tenor and Paolo Vinaccia on drums. Maybe some of Bill Charlap's "Rolls Royce" (my term) trio too. -

Thanks for this story, Chuck! Harold Minerve's girlfriend was in Richard Davis' jazz history class with us during Richard's first year in Madison, and she told us about the extent to which Paul Gonsalves was prone to missing concerts and other things in those early 1970s years--so your story is especially interesting to me. Love the story. I saw the band just before Ellington passed and Gonsalves away. The band was ragged, especially in the numbers before Duke took the stage, but when he was on stage, it became electric and the band played from the heart with as much intensity as they could muster, with Duke growling, shouting and swinging on stage. Gonsalves was on he knees playing most of the time, and I remember the bit where he played a ballad and walked through the audience, pausing in front of a lady or two. He was also drinking every spare moment off stage. Here's a photo of mine of Geezil Minerve:

I think Joe would know, but I'm surprised also.

I once hung with him a little when he came to Rochester to play with Jimmy Rowles and Michael Moore. Jimmy Rowles got blind drunk, so waxed in fact that he fell off the stool on the first set of the first night and was fired. My Buddy Barry Kiener was deputized to take over for the night and we all had a fine time. The Rowles trio was booked for a week but everyone had to go home the next day. Wormworth had never played with Rowles before and the whole scene kind of shocked him. Jimmy's daughter Tracey is a bass player who played with Herbie.

The only artist I ever asked for a autograph was Art Blakey, who signed this LP for me.

That's Bob's travel bass in lieu of a acoustic. He must have been feeling randy that day.

Freddie Hubbard, Pinnacle: Live and Unreleased
marcello replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
If there is some editing, I can't hear it. The focus is on Freddie. Hadley Caliman plays the best sidemen solo, to my ears. I know there are many, many tapes of all kinds of artists, in Todd's secret stash. I believe Dexter Gordon may be next in line. -
One of the great Snooky Young features is "Pensive Miss" on "Basie Plays Hefti".

Freddie Hubbard, Pinnacle: Live and Unreleased

There are only a couple of solos from each sidemen on the entire disc, but this is all Freddie, and he's really killin! The sound quality isn't perfect, but then again, the performances are great. By the way, Todd is back at Dizzy's four night a week and is recovering well. I found this video for the CD: -
I made my case!

And the fact that that's a "problem" instead of an obvious DUH to almost everybody in the world these days, that's the real problem, the result of some indeed very bad ideas very well executed. Very Good, Jim!

One of my favorites! Here's one of my photos of him when he played with The Heath Brothers:

She travel everywhere with the most annoying "jazz stage parents" you could imagine. Her whole vibe irks me.
