I rarely see this mentioned when McDuff is discussed. Anyone else here who has and likes it?

This may have been my first exposure to a good conga player in a jazz context. Fred Walker, later changed his name to Derf Reklaw Rahim.

I like that one a lot and spin it frequently. I think I first picked it up after a mention here. Love the cover too.

As far as I can see there was a Japanese CD reissue, but there isn't a single copy listed for sale on discogs.

I sold my vinyl copy a few months ago. This wasn't very well recorded.

This is re: Mtume Alkebu-lan on Strata-East.  Agree it was poorly recorded, and also that the performance is sloppy (needed much more rehearsal), but the set has great historical perspective, representing a vital moment (time/place/spirit) in jazz history,and the personnel is staggering (Gary Bartz, Carlos Garnett, Stanley Cowell, Leroy Jenkins, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Ndugu, Andy Bey, Joe Lee Wilson, and more).

I agree on all points. It was just about time to reduce my collection, I got a great offer and made another collector happy.

It is strange that it hasn't been reissued, as it is greatly prized by the Instagram clout chasing circles that seem to be the target market for so many reissues. It isn't an album I ever really loved, but I find it interesting as a record of a world long gone.

I've mentioned this a couple of times before but I was working on an above-board reissue of it that didn't happen in part due to Mr. Mtume's death. As with all Strata-East recordings, the rights are owned by the musicians, so hopefully James Mtume's estate will take up the mantle and reissue it at some point.
