jeffcrom Posted January 10, 2015 Report Posted January 10, 2015 Pharoah Sanders - Izipho Zam, disc 4 from the Clifford Jordan set. I'm guessing that this will be my least-played disc in the box in future years. I was listening to the Izipho Zam session in the car last week. The only track I found a bit 'challenging' on the ear was the one with the yodelling. Other than that - I like it. "Challenging" is not a problem for me. (I'm a big Ayler fan.) I just found the Sanders session uninteresting. Quote
gmonahan Posted January 10, 2015 Report Posted January 10, 2015 Charles Mingus The Complete Candid Recordings Disc 1 I am new to this forum, and perhaps this is the wrong thread for this, but: I recently listened to a friend's copy of the Mosaic Charles Mingus Candid Rcordings. It is really good with very good sound, IMO. It is out of print and quite spendy. Most of these tracks are on the following albums: Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus, Mingus, Reincarnation of a Lovebird, Mysterious Blues and Newport Rebels. Has anyone compared these CDs to the Mosaic Box? Recommendations? First, welcome to the forum!! If I may, I'd suggest you start a new thread on this under "discography." You'd be far more likely to get responses there than under this thread! gregmo Quote
David Ayers Posted January 14, 2015 Report Posted January 14, 2015 Spent time recently with the Lighthouse dates on the mighty Elvin Jones Mosaic. Quote

jeffcrom Posted January 15, 2015 Report Posted January 15, 2015 John Carter/Bobby Bradford Select. This has been on my want list for awhile; I ordered it as soon as it hit the "running low" list. Quote

king ubu Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 been exploring Hawkins lately ... tons of it ... starting out with the Mosaic and adding whatever else I've got (plenty, but not quite all there is) ... extremely impressed, though much of it has been familiar for a while! Quote
JSngry Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 The Woody Herman Select, the mid-60s Phillips stuff. My first (and for a long time, only) exposure to this material was 1964 and I still think that's one of the best "traditional" big band records of the decade. The rest of the material in this set is fine or better, but, really, that 1964 album is one of those "moment in time" things, fresh band, fresh book, everything coming together right before your ears. No matter what, though, the Nat Pierce/Chuck Andrus/Jake Hanna rhythm section was as identifiale as any, ever, Phil Wilson & Sal Nistico immediately identifiable soloists who always came to play, and Bill Chase...I know, but..you know? "Hip", sure, and/but whatever. NOT the point, no matter what anybody thinks, one way or the other. The best Woody Herman bands had personalities, big, brash, rude, y'all do that, we'll do this, let's GO. This band had as much personality as any of them, and if they were in the shadow of the First & Second herds chronologically, hey, time is time, can't do anything about that. I mean, if you're gonna be "that kind" of band, dammit, be THIS that kind of band! Hard to hit a moving target, ya' know? Quote
JSngry Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 And you know how a positive times a negative will result in a negative but a negative times a negative, that magnetpolicity of theoretical-real numberlife? Well, how many ever negatives there are in this times-equation, it must be an even number, because, how/why/HUH, there's no other real explanation. And ok, one more and I'm out, but does Phil Wilson's break sound like about the only other person would would do that would be Lockjaw? Quote
Justin V Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 The Complete Verve Roy Eldridge Studio Sessions, Disc 1: Part of the recent warehouse discovery. I'm going to play this set a lot. Quote
TedR Posted January 30, 2015 Report Posted January 30, 2015 Posters who I have a lot of respect for say they love this set. Nuts. I missed it. Again. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 14, 2015 Report Posted February 14, 2015 Glad I got a copy in the recent warehouse find sale - this music is so much better than I expected, but maybe my jazz abstinence for several months helped - it really re-opened my ears for this kind of music. Quote

xybert Posted February 16, 2015 Report Posted February 16, 2015 Received the Benedetti box and the Dial box yesterday. Had a quick listen to some random tracks of each while i ripped them to my computer (which all went very smoothly, which i'm very grateful for). I'll post some more substantial thoughts on each box in their dedicated threads once i've had some proper listens (by 'substantial thoughts' i mean that i'll probably just be ranting on about how awesome they are), but FWIW here are some quick thoughts: - I'm so stoked to have these, particularly the Benedetti which has been a set that i have coveted for a long time but thought of as a bit of an indulgence/luxury item. - Admittedly only listened to a few random tracks but first impressions = pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the Benedetti. Totally listenable. - Haven't done side-by-side comparisons of the Dial material with other releases of the same material that i have, but it sounds good to me. - On the subject of the weird symbol sounds on some tracks, it's interesting. As i say, i've only had a quick listen, but taking track one on disc two for example, yeah there are sections where it sounds like the type of text book digital artifact/swirling you get on low bit rate MP3s. Now, i take them at their word that the sound is not a result of any digital tampering, that it's the result of the original recording or transfers or whatever, however the problem is that regardless of what's caused it it sounds like something that is well known to be displeasing to the ear. It's like, if you don't like mustard, and you order a sandwich and it tastes like there is mustard on it, and you don't like the taste so you ask the chef 'what's up?', and the chef confirms that there is in fact no mustard on the sandwich, and he is correct there is no mustard, what you're tasting is in fact a by product of the yeast in the bread, it doesn't really matter because at the end of the day it tastes like mustard and you don't like mustard. Anyway, just thinking aloud at this stage; it's not a deal breaker for me and i have a lot of listening to do before i'm ready to 'pass judgement'. As i say, overall i'm thrilled to have the Dial set and i can't wait to really dig in to it. Quote
JSngry Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 Serious question - Can that really happen, that bread tastes like mustard because of the yeast? Don't get me wrong, I love mustard (all kinds), just want to know what to look out to avoid eating some funkyass bread. Quote

Don't get me wrong, I love mustard (all kinds), just want to know what to look out to avoid eating some funkyass bread. Sorry, i just made that up for the purposes of the analogy as i hurried through it. I love mustard too! Also, i came home from work and wanted to double check for the 'swooshing' again, and yeah i heard it, although it sounded less 'digital artifact' like this time round. But then i had a large meal of Spaghetti Bolognaise for dinner, and now i can't hear it anymore, like, at all. So there you go, don't over eat on pasta when attempting to do critical listening. On a serious note (although seriously, the pasta did affect my hearing) i did compare Diggin' Diz from the Dial set versus the version that i had on The Complete Studio Chronicle set prior to eating, and the version on the Dial set just totally blows it out of the water. Loving the Dodo Marmarosa stuff BTW! Loving this set! Edited February 17, 2015 by xybert Quote
