I agree. I think for the combination of quality and scarcity of the material this is one of the very best Mosaic sets period.

Inspired by a thread here about it I decided to pick it up. And because I hadn't listened to it in a while. And what wonder again.

Edit: this is a very good Select. One of the bests. And I just found out also the second, behind only the Moncur, which I adore.

This afternoon, leisurely working my way through CDs 8-10 of Basie Studio. Starting with Benny Carter’s fine arrangements for ‘Kansas City Suite’.

I finally found a nice copy of this at a very affordable price, completing my set of Basie Mosaics!  Funny, when asked what music I was into I used to say Miles, Coltrane, Blue Note label etc.  Now it's Basie and big band generally.

The last session is wonderful. The one with Russell Garcia and strings is so so.

I have been meaning to post that Buddy Rich set for a long time. Completely underrated gem of a Mosaic. I'll regularly have my jazz on shuffle on Plex and hear a song that I think is great and unique only to turn and find that it's this set. Interesting variety of instrumental lineups (I normally hate flute but he even makes THAT work) and always swinging performances.
