Mark Stryker Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 First for me was the Monk set in either late 1983 or 1984, and then the Port of Harlem and Tina Brooks. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) My first was the very first - the Monk Blue Note set. Christmas 1984 (or was it 1985). Same here - the Mulligan/Baker and Ammons/Lewis sets followed soon after. But I can't remember the year. Edited October 27, 2013 by mikeweil Quote
Mark Stryker Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) I took a look at my Monk set to see if I could determine a date of purchase and discovered my number was 5540/7500 so my initial post suggesting I got it as early as late 83 must be wrong. With a number that high it was certainly no earlier than probably the latter half of 1984 or perhaps '85. Question: of those with the Monk set, which came out in July 1983, who's got the lowest number? Promos don't count. Edited October 27, 2013 by Mark Stryker Quote
sidewinder Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Any advance on Monk set 2907? Quote
ArtSalt Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Don Cherry, circa 1995? That one was gone when I "joined" (1997 I assume, maybe 1998 - the TKM came somewhen in 1997, but it took me a few months after reading and clipping a rewiew to figure out how to get hold of it ... and then surface shipping took another pair of months). I didn't get on to Mosaic untill the 2000s and sets like that were long gone by the time I cottoned on to Mosaic's website. The ones I missed have taken some rooting out over the years. I was late too the Mosaic party too, started with The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. And I've gone way back since then! Quote

J.A.W. Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) Interesting thread. I think my first Mosaic back in the 1980s was the Mulligan/Baker LP-set, but I'm not sure. Sold my LPs years ago, so I can't check the number. Edited October 27, 2013 by J.A.W. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) Tina Brooks...the vinyl version.Me too. Edited October 27, 2013 by jlhoots Quote
jazzbo Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) I am pretty sure that's the only Brooks version there was! That was an early one for me too, I remember it blowing me away. I got all of it on cd eventually and sold it. Now I wish I hadn't as I'm back into vinyl, and happily so. Edited October 27, 2013 by jazzbo Quote
king ubu Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Yeah, the Brooks is wonderful! Even though I got all the CDs as well, I still cherish it! Got that one, the Pepper 3LP and the Buck Clayton from a great local record shop, in the very late 90s, I think. Was hooked by Brooks very much and instantly! Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 I am pretty sure that's the only Brooks version there was!Yep, the Tina Brooks set (#106) was "LP only": http://www.mosaicrecords.com/outofprint.asp Quote

I wonder if there are any spare copies of the booklet at Mosaic...I must ask them Quote
mjazzg Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Another late comer with Sam Rivers in about 1997 and very soon after that the big Andrew Hill. Only Selects since then Quote
mr jazz Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Count Basie live I think over 20 years ago. Quote
jazzkrow Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Blue Mitchell, quite a while ago.... Quote
Blue Train Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 (edited) The first with my money (instead of just making a copy of Pops') was Basie's Clef/Verve 50's Studio Recordings in 2005. Edited October 27, 2013 by Blue Train Quote
felser Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 The Tina Brooks LP set. Holy Grail stuff then. Quote

T.D. Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Very much a latecomer, Carmell Jones Select for me. Only Selects so far, though the Clifford Jordan Strata-East may cause an alteration to that policy... Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 It's interesting that so many have started recently, when many Mosaic boxes had gone out of print. Does that suggest that the number of sets was pitched too low? MG Quote

Does that suggest that the number of sets was pitched too low? MG Hard to say without knowing Mosaic's financials. The "limited edition" approach seems essential in order to maintain price levels and "desirability". My personal hunch (nothing more) is that the number of sets was pitched a bit low. But 5,000 is a nice round number, something like 7,000 would look weird, and 10,000 probably too high! Quote
