jazzbo Posted December 24, 2022 Report Posted December 24, 2022 We lost power last night . . . which gave us traumatic flashbacks of twelve total days two winters ago without power, heat, water when the weather was even a bit warmer. . . but it came back on again four minutes later to our relief. Still no plows have come into our neighborhood and we've canceled a trip to the West side (about 50 minutes in normal weather) planned for this afternoon to see my brothers and their families. This is a lonely Xmas now as both Lucy and I no longer have parents among the living. Sigh. Quote

We let the faucets drip all night. Quote
Pim Posted December 24, 2022 Report Posted December 24, 2022 One of the reasons why I love this forum. Could you imagine communicating this way with each other some 30 years ago? Had the same feeling with the COVID thing. The whole world feels so small suddenly. Quote
medjuck Posted December 24, 2022 Report Posted December 24, 2022 I'm embarrassed to say that it's 68 (going to 70) and clear here. (But we desperately need precipitation.) Quote
jazzbo Posted December 24, 2022 Report Posted December 24, 2022 It's warmed up to 3 degrees! Above Zero! Quote
jlhoots Posted December 24, 2022 Report Posted December 24, 2022 It's still nice here - 45 & sunny. Our kids are stuck in Atlanta because their connecting flight didn't arrive. Weather from Atlanta to Albuquerque is fine, but there's no plane. Hopefully they get out on the next flight in approx. 4 hours which is currently listed as "on time". Quote
Brad Posted December 25, 2022 Report Posted December 25, 2022 Tonight it will be 10. Better than last night. Still need to do a wash. However, it’s warming up overnight. 5 hours ago, jazzbo said: It's warmed up to 3 degrees! Above Zero! It’s a heat wave! Quote
Michael Posted December 25, 2022 Report Posted December 25, 2022 a TROPICAL heat wave......11 degrees here in Pittsburgh Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 25, 2022 Report Posted December 25, 2022 (edited) 12 degrees Fahrenheit and thick white material as far as I can see. Hey, it's Buffalo. Edited December 25, 2022 by Chuck Nessa Quote

Yeah and on the Dutch news as well as the place hit worst. But those temperatures aren’t very exceptional for that area are they? I have taught geography for a while and I am pretty sure Buffalo has a continental climate where it could become pretty cold during winter time. Quote

Was thinking about Chuck and the city of Buffalo - the Times mostly covered how bad it is in their wrap up. Pim, I think Buffalo is most famous for "lake-effect snow" in winter as weather systems move west to east, they are situated at the eastern end of Lake Erie, and the water feeds the system producing sometimes shocking accumulations. This storm though is really off the charts. Here outside of Tampa, we got the same low temperature as last night but the pipes have frozen, no doubt because the cold sank deeper, and partly, perhaps, aided by the lack of much of a warm up (high of 45 yesterday). Mostly though my wife didn't run the faucets at all before she went to bed, so I hope that was not an extremely costly mistake. Quote

My geographical knowledge didn’t reach that far (I am teaching social studies and philosophy after all ) anyway hope everyone is going to be okay over there! It’s getting warmer coming days right? here it’s the typical dull grey 7 degrees Celsius Dutch winter weather…. I’m dreaming of a white…. Quote

northwood Posted December 25, 2022 Report Posted December 25, 2022 A South Korean tour group was stuck outside a house near Buffalo, so they spent the weekend with the homeowners. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 26, 2022 Report Posted December 26, 2022 I wish all of you get over this without harm. We had a week of freezing here in mid-December but this was nothing compared to what you experience. Now it has 10 degrees centigrade day and night and the rain washed away what liittle snow there was. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 26, 2022 Report Posted December 26, 2022 We are prohibited from driving and the emergency vehicles can't get through. Streets might be cleared in 2 days. Just watched some silly citizen with a vehicle w/blade try to go down our street. Big FAIL. He backed out and went home. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 It is very, very hot, pretty much everywhere. The heat index hit 152 degrees in Iran today. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 When I walked the driveway at 8:15 to get the paper it was 16-degrees and I Phrygian my ass. When it gets up to 32, I'll celebrate with a gin and pentatonic. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 It was 1 F this morning. Now it's 7 F. At least the high wind of last week and the start of the week seems to have ceased. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 Local lake frozen over here - quite unusual. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 17, 2024 Report Posted January 17, 2024 High today should be 45 & sunny. Quote
Pim Posted January 20, 2024 Report Posted January 20, 2024 (edited) SO how are you guys doing out there in the States? Was in the news over here that temperatures are getting pretty low this weekend? Edited January 20, 2024 by Pim Quote
