  1. Have I missed something ? I have had no problem playing my RVG copy controlled Rollins Vol1 on my PC, it plays with the usual Windows media player and the tracks can be ripped by an old copy of free zip. So what's going on. Is the disc copy controlled or not?? . The sound quality of the ripped tracks sound unchanged so I can't be ripping the compressed files. Any thoughts ? What ever the status of my disc I still think the idea stinks and for that reason I will buy no more copy controlled discs from BN
  2. I picked up the Silver trio and Rollins Vol 1. Both at £5 and copy controlled. Both sound very good but given the concerns above these will be my last BNs till the longevity of this new format has been clarified. May even pass on the upcoming Conns if they appear in this new format. I have never ripped a disc for anyone and object to being treated like a criminal rather than a pillar of the jazz community.
  3. I have seen these guys three times now. They absolutely rock and are amongst the sincerest musicians I have met. They love the music and it shows. The hype does not do them justice. I will be very interested to see how they progress. I am pretty sure they are currently/ have recently recorded their second Columbia date.
  4. Next time I am in Knowle I will look out for someone looking shifty with an enormous satchel. I am planning for my own operation "Hamilton/AEC gross out" probably sometime next week !!!

    Phil Grenadier

I couldnt disagree more with Jazz1. Bud's opening number is a beautifully simple theme. Bud's BN recording doesnt take it far but Phil and co. show how something with mere playful intentions can be crafted into something more profound. Nothing repetitive here to my ears either on this track or the rest of the album. Each to his own I guess.
  6. This is a good disc, had it a while and still spin it regularly. A grower.
  7. good luck with the tiling !!!!!
  8. Happy birthday, thanks for all you helpful advice over the years here and at the old place. B)
  9. why are you boycotting Duke Jordan, his piano style or what,......
  10. Once I bought this album I really regretted missing out on "Heavy Soul" as "Tt might as..." is a sweet as a nut.
  11. sorry to dissent but I hear zero difference between the Mosaic Poppin and the TOCJ, both sound just fine
  12. Cuong Vu would also be good hear in this context
  13. I have the JJJ and enjoy it but it's probably too long. I presume that is the problem with the Stitt set. Who really needs that much Sonny Stitt in a quartet setting ? Mind you I'm still tempted.

    Burning vinyl

I use an Edirol UAID USB cable . It takes digital input's. My turntable uses the D/A converter of my minidisc player out-putting through this device to the hard drive on my laptop ( no need to shift the stereo) . I use Cubasis for editing. I mainly use this set up to copy live mini discs to CD, it works equally well for LPs. For the minidiscs it allows all digital signal with no unnecessary D/A A/D conversion . Works for me.

    Sep RVGs

This thread had me digging out the Bud BN box. The RVG s of vols 1 &2 are clearly superior in every way. The later sessions are adequate on the box if a little dull sounding. Far more off putting is Bud's ? groaning as he plays. The worst bit of the box is however the packaging which is overly clever but looses any sense of the importance of the music in hand. It's over produced in a way. The far simpler presentations of the Bud RVGs makes them much nicer to handle. In short it's a mess. The limitations of the Verve Bud box are that so much of the music should never have been issued, appauling false starts and really primitive turgid playing. Warts and all it may be but you end up remembering only the warts. Unhelp for Bud's legacy.
  16. In my experience upgrading is largely pointless exercise in money wasted> I would far rather have a session I have never heard than rebuy a spruced up session I already own. The RVG early Powells, Monk and Davis sessions are however vast improvements. Others such as POD or Unity or The Connection sound ever so slightly better but not worth the dough.
  17. I saw him last December in a blistering performance with Xavier Davis (piano) in acoustic quartet setting . Go see.
  18. er.. babel fish can't help me out with this one
  19. That could be a useful reference to help justify the unjustifiable expenditure of time and money on jazz in this household !!
  20. Still trying to absorb this one. Interestingly the sessions from HIGHLIFE/UHURU AFRIKA which I hadn't previously got into really seem to be growing on me. Perhaps it's the better sound or perhaps I hadn't listened closely enough to the 80s CD version of these sessions.
  21. When is the Mosaic CJB set due out?

    Oct conns?

gotta be the Hill, might pick up the Hank but too many of his sessions are too similar

    Phil Grenadier

His new CD is well worth it, still finding new things and enjoying all the more after several months of listening He has a great burry tone and oblique approach to the music which already strikes me as a pretty personal style.
