  1. Past hour
  2. Anyone here listening to this in 2026? Man! It feels like a DeJohnette gig at times. He's ALL over the place, and yet (somehow over the volume) he's hearing everything McCoy and Joe are doing. And it seems like Henry Grimes would be exhausted after how many notes??
  3. Did I see Jon Gordon mentioned? Phil Woods mentored him.
  4. Dexter Gordon “Night Ballads Montreal 1977” Uptown cd Bass – Rufus Reid Drums – Eddie Gladden Piano – George Cables Tenor Saxophone – Dexter Gordon The Rising Sun, Montréal, November 9-12, 1977 Some great Dexter quoting, especially imo “Laura” in “Lover Man” . . . .
  5. Today
  6. Bill Evans “On a Friday Evening” Concord cd The Plangent Process really helps this one out. The system is sounding great today!
  7. Boston’s Either/Orchestra toured in Africa, specifically Ethiopia, and recorded Éthiopiques 20: Live in Addis.
  8. Here's a white alto player:
  9. I saw Benny Carter when (IIRC-- and I often don't) he was over 90. He played just fine.
  10. It's got Leo Watson playing drums with Lena Horne
  11. A friend of mine recently told me his brother has a trio gig every other week I should go see and he sent me a link to a video: I saw “John Purcell” and got all excited. But he’s not “that” John Purcell. But he is a white alto player.
  12. Yesterday
  13. It is quite a weird topic for a thread. Lots of white alto players out there. Lots of black alto players too.
  14. Mike Osborne (UK) is a favo(u)rite of mine. Just discovering this thread...had always assumed Strozier white. 😨
  15. I had wanted to read it since it first came out because several years ago I had seen a couple of his films which were very good, such as Westfront 1918.
  16. okay, that part seems line a joke, but the broader query is more serious.
  17. I've seen several elderly Jazz musicians in recent times that should have been retired. Their playing was not good. One sax player embarrassed himself up on stage. Not every septuagenarian/octogenarian is physically capable of continuing their music career. I wonder why Bobby Kimball retired? He was a great singer with Toto.
  18. "The Unique Thelonious Monk" Riverside/Universal Japan SHM-cd The second Riverside recording by Monk, with Pettiford and Clarke. . . timeless.
  19. Ts find (from the bin again)
  20. Neil Young, 80, cancelled his scheduled European tour.
  21. Conference Call - Final Answer (Soul Note). Gebhard Ullmann (tenor and soprano saxopjones, bass clarinet); Michael jefry Stevens (piano); Joe Fonda (double bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Not really my kind of music. It's bandcamp Friday, so if you like it, you can buy it today and support the artists: https://gebhardullmann.bandcamp.com/album/final-answer
  22. Did You miss this one? That is not someone exploring ethnic/cultural identity.
