  1. Just had a listen to the powerman 5000 track sounds like they are coming from a similar vibe as Dave Graney!! (amazing songwriter & totally cool dude) One listen & Dave came immediatly to mind http://www.thedavegraneyshow.com http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Graney He's one of Australia's lesser known gems - been around (with his partner Claire Moore) since the late 70's - contemporaries of the Bad Seeds, Go-Betweens etc Various Bands he has led: Moodists, White Buffaloes, Coral Snakes, Dave Graney Show, Lurid Yellow Mist, The Mistly He's mixes a combination of folk/rock/jazz/lounge-core - Claire plays drums/vibes/xyl I usually get to see him once a year during one of his Australian tours - he's been on the road for over 35 years now You should be able to find a lot of his clips on YouTube - one of my favourite titles is "I've Got Dimensions" - below is a YouTube link of a live version in 2005 ps. That Serge Gainsbourg clip with the dancer is an absolute scream
  2. Still no mention of "The Giant…" on Import CDs though it's available through Amazon US & UK, Dusty Groove (currently OOS), Downtown Music Gallery & even Ebay I've bought all of Jonathan's previous releases through them & the CDs have all been advertised weeks before release date - wonder what's happening here DMG lists it as a limited edition of 1000 copies!! - more hype or is that the case Jonathan?
  3. One of my favourite M's !! That was my second Mosaic (after the Mingus Candid) back in 1993 - can't believe that's over 20 years ago now I managed to get Steve Lacy to autograph the booklet (smack bang in the middle of Denis Charles bass drum ) when he played here in Brisbane sometime in the late 90's
  4. Just got the email too - looking forward to that NYA4 set I got that e-mail too - BUT I can't find the CDs on their website. E-mailed - waiting for reply. This is often the case with their new releases listed on the catalogue/brochure - they may not be on their online database for a few days to a week or so
  5. Many thanks - just ordered a set - had this on my wants list !!
  6. Just got the email too - looking forward to that NYA4 set
  7. Wow, this is going to be a hard call - I've got all of this material except for Garner Bird Savoy/Dial Atlantic set & the UK Spotlite CDs
  8. The Mosaic set has 21 tracks (from 5 live sets) Sing Song Room, Confucius Restaurant, NYC The Gambit CD contains the 18 tracks that were released on the Double LP "The Lennie Tristano Quartet" (Atl 7006 - 13 titles) & the single LP "Tristano" (Atl 1224 - 5 titles) - excludes the three titles released on the Mosaic set (further 20mins of music )
  9. The French "Fou Records" label has just released a live? recording of this quartet at the Theatre Dunois, Paris in July of 82 http://www.allumesdujazz.com/albums/Bailey_Leandre_Lewis_Parker_Dunois_82_1888_68_5
  10. That would be a "Killer" Mosaic set IMHO - would they attempt something like this? - does their mission statement include "C20 classical" original LP covers by David Stone Martin
  11. They probably still do - I picked up a copy from Mosaic earlier this year
  12. here's a decent discography of the Dial label (including the non US artists - Blue Star etc) http://www.jazzdisco.org/dial-records/discography-1943-1951/

    Uptown

Tristano's label was "Jazz Records" - don't think this has been previously released on this label (live Birdland 49, Toronto 52 & Half Note 58)

This is great!! more unreleased Warne - this session is not listed in his online discography http://www.warnemarsh.info/discography_2.htm how frequently did Willie play with Lennie, Lee & Warne?
  15. just heard the news RIP Kenny
  16. Looks new & promising - I check the site occasionally & this is the first glimmer of hope!!
  17. what a wonderfully fulfilled life - one of my faves - will miss you Gerald His recent Mack Avenue releases were just as good as his PJ material
  18. These sets are mightily expensive especially if you live outside the states but I did go for the NYA4 set & have no regrets - it's a beautiful piece of work musically & aesthetically - highly recommended!!! Though I'm very into Cecil Taylor, I'm reticent to get this one as it's only part of a week long residency at the Village Vanguard - I'm hoping this will eventually be released in its entirety on CD (as in the Codanza 10CD set)
  19. nice overall - that Trovesi set looks very interesting the later Chico Hamiltons are also appealing - one is a tribute to Eric Dolphy (My Panamanian Friend) The Blackwell has overlap - two from the Haden set (Old & New Dreams) & one from the David Murray second box (Morning Song) Hopefully Amazon France offers a special multiple deal like they did with the last batch
  20. Here's a few questions answered - I've been communicating with Wolf Schmaler (one of the contributors to the Coltrane Reference) over the past year or so regarding all things Coltrane Have you heard the newly released Temple University 2CD set - Interestingly its been released by Resonance Records - I was expecting Hip-O-Select IMHO, sound quality is excellent It’s actually a Verve release, I think, Resonance is a separate company licened by Verve. Don’t know why they organized the release like this. As far as I know all announcements (and the highly interesting discussion after the concert) have been edited out because of Verve and WRTI-FM contracts. Ashley Kahn's notes throw up some interesting points 1. He claims that Garrison was not present (only one bassist) - though there are 2 photos in the booklet of a concert performance (details not given) & both bassists are present Maybe these are from a different location? After long discussions of the question “one or two bassists” in the group the result is: “one bassist only, Sonny Johnson”. Kenyatta – in an interview with Fuji – remembered “Sonny Johnson for sure, Jimmy Garrison possibly”, but aural evidence (Chris DeVito, a former bassist himself) and other sources clearly say there is no reason to assume Garrison was present. The photos: I can’t see two bassists on the second photo. Both photos (middle pages and the second) most probably are from a performance Village Vanguard, December 26, 1966. 2. Confirms Rashied Ali's presence Yes, that seems to be confirmed.
  21. I bought that as a double LP when it was first released in 1990 highly recommended!!
  22. Finally !!!! I've been waiting soooo long for this
  23. "Sonny Stitt", "Inter-Action" & "Mr Bojangles" are still available through HMV Japan, currently at a reduced price (906 Yen) http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/advanced_1/category_1%2C2%2C3%2C4%2C5%2C7%2C9%2C10%2C23%2C24%2C50/formattype_1/keyword_sonny+stitt/sort_datedesc/target_SEARCH/
  24. It's a compilation. It's consists of selections from Burnin' (Argo, 1958, w/ Barry Harris), Sonny Stitt & Bennie Green - My Main Man (Argo, 1964), and Sonny Stitt & Zoot Sims - Inter-action (Cadet, 1965). The sucky think is that there is room left on the CD - they could probably have included at least one complete album. Because they've been issued with the same cover, "Burnin'" is often confused with Argo 629, "Sonny Stitt," which had no liner notes or listing of personnel, only the same photo of Stitt on both front and back. The rhythm section on Argo 629 has often been said to be the same as on "Burnin,'" (Barry Harris, Frank Gant, and William Austin) but in fact Stitt is backed there by the Ramsey Lewis Trio. The quite distinctive work of bassist El Dee Young is the giveaway; also, Lewis sounds nothing like Barry Harris. Finally, unexpected though this may be, Argo 629 is the superior album IMO, one of the best Stitt ever made. Larry, thanks for the musician info re Argo 629 (is it Eldee or El Dee Young?) - you wouldn't have a more accurate date than 57-58?
  25. its published by KHA Books & you can buy if from their website http://www.black-e-books.com/books/313-lady-who-shot-lee-morgan.html
