Miles Davis - So What: Complete 1960 Amsterdam Concerts
romualdo replied to aurelio's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I only have the Chet Baker release - I remember buying it directly from the Dutch Jazz Archive & not through a linked dealer as appears to be the case now - I emailed the Archive & ordered the CD using Paypal on their advice. I'm quite sure that when the Baker CD was released you could only buy it from this site. -
Clifford Brown at the Cotton Club... ??
romualdo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The album is listed as being produced by Max Roach. interesting connection - wonder who has the tapes now - Larue? -
The three faulty "mono" discs were Ming, New Life & Hope Scope Does anyone know whether these are now "fixed" and if I order a set through amazon it will be OK? One can only assume since it's been a long while since the error was discovered and corrected. If you want to be sure that all the "bad" ones were recalled from internet retailers like Amazon, I might suggest sending an email to Cam Jazz and asking them that very question. Try this email simone@camscores.com I have dealt with Simone over the past few years regarding these boxed sets - he's been very helpful Had my faulty Murray box replaced

Label timings are: Lover Man 6:32 Daahoud 10:23 What's New 19:14 I'll Remember April 3:54 However, the album label and jacket both mislabel "What's New" as "I'll Remember April", and vice-versa. It should also be noted that these tunes came to Elektra Musician/Bruce Lundvall thorugh Max Roach, who, iirc, claimed ownership of them. many thanks - looks like they are the same What about 52nd street theme (listed in the Lord discog) - is that on the LP? -
Has anyone had any experience of using the HMV website for ordering CDs? The last time I ordered anything from them, which was some time ago, I gave up after a couple of weeks and cancelled. I wouldn't be recommending them if I didn't think they were any good! There was a blip in customer service about a year ago when they migrated from Guernsey to Birmingham in the wake of the tax loophole being closed, but they are back to normal now. recently ordered the Harriott Vocalion double through them (was only £9 but shipping was £4.50) - took quite a while (it was OOS) but did come through in the end one thing that did annoy me was related to VAT - their list prices include VAT which was not removed from my order (as Amazon UK does when shipping to Australia) - I emailed them twice about this but never received a reply

Clifford Brown at the Cotton Club... ??

Yes I have that one, it's been out for quite a while now, there are a couple of reviews on Amazon, one of which explains that the tracks are probably not from the Cotton Club at all, it's just a guess, I think the liners say somthing like that also, but I haven't read them in a while. Durium posted and blogged about it a while back as well, here. Amazon review referred to above By Mark E. Lewis Format:Audio CD The music on these cds comes from some tapes that belonged to Clifford Brown's widow, LaRue who was a friend of mine. Many years ago she gave me a stack of reel to reel tapes to make copies of, some which had been in the trunk of clifford's car when it crashed. None of the tapes had any kind of information on them. So excepting the radio broadcast from Buffalo and the untitled blues, everything else on the three cd's is from ONE night, somewhere, starting with Take the A Train in the first set, and ending with get happy in the third set. The Cotton Club is a guess, and the recording dates are wrong, because all three sets are surely from the same night. They are issued out of order here. The untitled blues, [wee dot] is from another tape, and another night. Both of these tapes were used to make the record album, "Pure Genius". "Lover", [or Diggin' Diz] has a guest drummer sitting in. I think Max said Chuck Lampkin. My guess is that Clifford recorded most of this with his reel to reel. When he and Sonny finish their solos, someone moves the mike over to the piano. Clifford's solos are a joy to behold, and the cd is worth buying just to hear what he plays on Lover! I guess the people who put this out felt they had to come up with a title and date to help sell it. The music is all that counts, and it is beautiful. So, as the above review confirms, some of the titles on this 3 CD set appear to have been issued - the Elektra Musician LP (1982) "Pure Genius" lists 5 titles, 4 of which are likely on disc 3 ie Lover Man 6:02 Daahoud 10:43 What's New 3:49 I'll Remember April 19:04 These timings appear to fit nicely onto an LP (52nd St Theme has been omitted) Can anyone out there with the LP confirm that the timings are similar? -
"Sessions, Live" LP, featuring Buddy DeFranco Quintet and Art
romualdo replied to sgcim's topic in Discography
the three DeFranco titles are included as a bonus on the the 2007 CD issue (Definitive Records) of "The Buddy DeFranco Wailers" The last title is also known as "Now's The Time" -
thanks for the advice here's the reply I just got back from "Black Jazz" Hi Stephen how are you. The music is transfered from the orginal master tapes. I can make it possible to ship to you withought Jewel cases how does $11.00 a cd sound? Also the cd's on Snow Dog Records are not bootleggs. I licenced a 300 unit minimum to Snow Dog Thanks. James/Black Jazz Records Still sound sus? $11 for discs w/o cases (but with the rest of the packaging?)...not what I'd go for, but you did get a response and it does seem legit enough...but still, me, I'd go for the Snow Dogs from Dusty Groove or some other "known quantity". Seems like a sure thing going that route. that includes shipping to far away Australia (I usually ask for removal of jewel cases - takes the load of the shipping charge - so the price sounds good to me)

The "Nice Life Music" label has just released the complete (?) first & second sets (almost 80 mins) of the Dec 2, 1969 Cologne concert - more titles than Kelly lists in his sessionography this appears to be a WDR concert recording - excellent quality Havn't heard of this label before but Matias Rinar has written the liner notes so I suspect it is part of the spanish stable Impressed by the SQ

Dr F can you be a bit more specific - I've emailed them (2 days ago) but have not yet received a reply - was considering buying a few of their CDs, esp Walter Bishop Jr & Doug Carn

Are there any box bargains currently available?
romualdo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Interplay (5CD) is selling for $25 (other non Amazon dealer) -
Anyone had any dealings with the "Black Jazz" label - it was resurrected in the late 2000's (interesting read on the site) http://www.blackjazz.com/main.html# wonder if the new owner has the original tapes & properly remastering these releases or are they needle drops? you can buy directly from them (paypal) I see there has been a recent Walter Bishop BJ reissue "Coral Keys" (advertised on the Jazz Loft site) - Snow Dog Projects label (may be a bootleg?)
-
The best tracks are masterpieces, the mediocre tracks are excellent, and the worst tracks are pretty damn good. Essential IMHO - you won't regret getting this (even if it's not to your liking, once it's OOP, you'll probably double your money on resale)

Holy Barbarian shipped with my Import CDs order on Nov 20
