  1. Sorry, I disagree with this whole heartedly. Irabagon still has more to learn, but he is heads and shoulders over many of his contemporaries.
  2. I highly recommend this disc. Someone should nab it.
  3. OK, this just blew my mind. From da bastids: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/770204
  4. "Tales of the Unforseen" is a much better album than the previous release. More variety, better playing.
  5. Agreed. I've been listening to Barry Altschul's "Tales of the Unforseen," and to my tiny little brain it is one of the best releases of the year, in no small part because of Ibragon's playing. Moreso than his peers, he seems to have made his own connection to the music of the past and added his voice to it. The combination of Ibragon, Altschul and Joe Fonda recalls Jimmy Giuffre's 1961 trio in execution and creativity.
  6. Perhaps it has to do with their listening to other forms of music, in particular indie rock, punk or the like.
  7. 62 pounds is about $94. Buy through the resellers. Anything different than on the older set?
  8. I think the Academy group sticks to the written music too faithfully. Ruffled shirts need to be unbuttoned, sleeve rolled up; time to get funky! An example that comes to mind are the naive Vivaldi series. Man, those musicians are playing nasty! They make the Brits look very stale.
  9. I have been happy with this speaker, from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Portable-Bluetooth-Speaker-Black/dp/B00EHZYWGM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1442928431&sr=8-3&keywords=amazon+bluetooth
  10. This works just fine for me: Zerodust Onzow Stylus Tip Cleaner
  11. SW-- I'm not anti-Brilliant, rather pro-Handel! I found the complete contents btw-- (I'd also add nobody can make the early Dvorak string quartets outstanding but Stamitz there do as well as anyone, their Martinu & Janacek are v. good also) https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/edition-box/hnum/7697204?iampartner=n31 You can decide for yourself what groupings of works etc are desirable here but within the oratorios they include, I'd recommend... NONE, maybe the Markus Creed cond. "Jephta" but really even that a distant third choice, after the superb live Biondi cond. on BIS & peak-period Gardiner. Creed's band is good... Depending how much of the concertos & chamber etc one needs and the performances, it might be worthwhile-- the Brilliant Corelli box is recommendable, for example, if not a first choice in any pieces-- but esp. in baroque where timbre & improvisatory zing! are so important... I'm wary & in the case of the oratorios, pining elsewhere. Shosty box is very good but do ttry to hear avant- &/or wacky DSCH of "The Nose" & the early ballets also. Moms, you are probably correct in your assessment. Apparently a lot of the material is culled from the Handel Portrait Brilliant box, which received mixed reviews. This is something that, at it's current price offering, is too good to pass up, as I have no Handel music. It may not be the best, but I'm not necessarily looking for the best. It's all relative to what one wants out of the set. In a completely different box set, Vivaldi, I was happy with the Marriner box until Larry Kart got my attention with his praise of the naive cds. I picked one up and was blown away by the vibrancy of the playing. Out went the Marriner.
  12. It's not a complete set, nor it is touted to be like the previous box either. As for their boxes in general, the Shostakovich and the Dvorak sets are front to back outstanding.
  13. Handel Edition Brilliant box 65 cds for $21 Sure, half of it could be crap, but for that kind of dough, why not take a chance?
  14. http://www.amazon.com/forum/classical music/ref=cm_cd_tfp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx2O5YQ79OVJBUQ&cdThread=TxCDB174QSRQPH Read Skaynan's posts. Enlightening.
  15. The Vegh Quartet cycle from 1954 is worth seeking out. Seems to be OOP now, but if and when Berkshire music is resurrected, they may have it.
  16. This is a good deal. Prices usually double after the initial selling period. Suitner was an excellent conductor of his symphonies, and the Stamitz Quartets do a fine job with the string quartets.
  17. This fool and his money have soon parted for a copy of this cd.
  18. Tonal range increases when you spread guacamole on it.
  19. Well, I'd be interested in the Wayne Shorter and Ornette Coleman concerts.
