  1. It comes up because the local sports reporters (who are part of the problem as well) try to out do one another with whatever seemingly plausible or loosely connected threads that are out there and make it into a story. But this one has some legs; apparently Snyder did meet Cowher in the past six weeks. And guess who the middle man was? James Brown, the CBS football anchor and Cowher's coworker. Having said that, I have a feeling they will look at better candidates like Jay Grueden from Cincinnati or the OC from Seattle or San Francisco.
  2. Emotiva makes good products. Scott, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the DAC -- in another thread, of course, since this is about speaker wires. I only have their 1st generation cd player.
  3. I agree with that 100%, Mr. Russell. It's one of the reasons why I've stuck with mid-fi rigs throughout the years. I just don't believe in spending more than $5K on one. To me, the returns you get from $10,000 rig over one that is $5,000 simply doesn't justify the extra dollars. Now folks like Kevin and Lon draw that line a little higher up, and that's cool because I know they both have great rigs that do indeed sound better than mine, and I'd love to hear both. And would do so with a huge grin on my face. Everyone has to decide for themselves when to say when.
  4. No kidding. Snyder is second only to Jones when it comes to an egomaniacal owner clueless about the game of football. He just tends to be a little more hands off than Jerry. If they don't have someone come in and mentor RGIII with his mechanics this off season, that team could be in the toilet for many years to come. I know he still favors that knee, but his mechanics this season made him look like Troy Aikmann last season. Agreed. And they better not get a "name" coach like Cowher (yes, there is one local media report stating that they are targeting him) or Gruden. Firing Shanahan and his crew was a shame, but it had to be done.
  5. Look, just be glad you aren't a Redskins fan. I am about to throw in the towel after this awful season. Tired of my team being the butt of the NFL, with a clueless owner, and a terrible coaching staff. They destroyed a promising team, and they are back in the cellar with a top draft choice going to another team.
  6. Then leave it at that, Scott. No need for this evangelical ranting.
  7. I'm not advocating buying expensive wiring. I am advocating synergy between the components, and wiring is one of many things to consider when setting up a system.
  8. The old snake oil argument. The endless debate in the audiophile world. I actually agree with Lon; there is a difference, depending on the equipment one has.
  9. Discovered this bit of information from another forum, that J & R recently laid off their entire music staff and is no longer selling music in the store or online. Checked out their website, and this seems to be true. Has anyone been there in the past week to confirm?
  10. You're right, I don't want them Yeah, you partially influenced me in checking out Curzon, among many others who speak highly of his playing.
  11. Bargains? Perhaps not, but I bought these at the lowest prices I've seen:
  12. Received my copy today. Yeah, this is outstanding. Zeitlin is no slouch on this either.
  13. Larry, you are probably right. I am less knowledgable with his overall work, just the snippets of classical that sometimes get my attention.
  14. $60 shipped from Amazon (resellers):
  15. Adam Gopnik has been around for years. Until this article, I thought he was a better than average critic. MUCH better than his brother, Blake, who is an insult to anyone who set words to paper or digital form. Blake was an art critic for the Washington Post who was always condescending towards his readers and/or his subject matter. Adam always wrote about classical, rarely jazz, so I have no idea where this revisionist history about Ellington is coming from.
  16. Sam Rivers Tuba trio sessions. Creative Construction Company Bill Dixon produced Savoy 60s sessions
  17. More like "when hell freezes over" wish lists: Chico Hamilton Impulse years Yusef Lateef Impulse Years Don Byas Small Group 40s 50s recordings Blue Mitchell Mainstream recordings Any LEGIT Horo reissues
  18. I love the Barshai Symphonies, and the added material made this impossible to resist ($86 shipped from broinc.com):
  19. The Matana Roberts disc stands out for me amongst the new releases this year. I enjoy the releases from independent labels like Clean Feed, NoBusiness, and others, but I have also been paying more attention to other genres, like African music and metal, the latter I think is the real story of 2013, of a resurgence in talent and real solid albums by bands old and new.
  20. This is one box set Soul Note needs to put together. Still dreaming of an Impulse box as well.
  21. I prefer the Carlos Kleiber disc as well.
