  1. Mine is actually pretty good with most jazz. She appreciates Big Band, Swing, and Hard Bop mostly. Free/Avant Garde is out of the question though. I can't put on any Ayler when she's around or anything in a similar vein.
  2. Yeah, I would never have this on a list of the top 1000. Maybe it's to introduce the listerner to the "smooth jazz" sound. A list in general can never be gospel. My daughter is doing a report for 5th grade on American Music, this list was on a site we hit while doing some researching. Yeah, that's the one that struck me as being odd when I scanned the list. There's many other Miles titles that would come before this IMO.
  3. I haven't listened to XTC in many years. I think I'll pull out my English Settlement LP(s) tonight and give them a whirl.
  4. Mint in box, still sealed. Looking for $30 postpaid to U.S. address. Great set! Thanks.
  5. I'm still partial to the Woody Shaw.
  6. I'd like to pull the trigger on the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set.
  7. Great! Buy it.
  8. Violin just doesn't do it for me. No tears shed when that Stuff Smith set went bye bye.
  9. Lately, it's been Woody Shaw's Stepping Stones which I picked up a month or two ago. I sure wish they would have included this in the Mosaic, but I'm happy to have it in any form.
  10. Marquee Moon is a landmark guitar album! For those players and guitar fans that have never heard Tom Verlaine's or Richard Lloyd's playing, I recommend running out and picking this up ASAP.
  11. This one is a cryin' shame considering how cool the original is.
  12. Hey Ethan, You may want to consider pushing the McLean up on your list. I'm a big McLean fan and Right Now is probably my favorite session, even surpassing classics like One Step Beyond and Destination Out IMHO. Great compositions including the title track by Charles Tolliver and the hauntingly beautiful Poor Eric. McLean is in top form and Clifford Jarvis' work on the drums is fantastic. Go for it!
  13. I agree with Late's assessment. It is a fine session but I also find the guitar work to be somewhat obtrusive and out of context. I do think that the positives outweigh the negatives here though.
  14. Tom, My condolences to you and your family.
  15. Cool! I missed the update.
  16. I don't think it's scheduled or even confirmed by Mosaic, but it's been mentioned as a possibility. It would make a nice Select.
  17. I've been diggin' the Brookmeyer for a few days now. Traditionalism Revisited is a standout, but the entire set is top notch. This is my first exposure to Brookmeyer as a leader and these sessions definitely exceeded my expectations.
  18. Tom, I hope and pray everything turns out ok for you.
  19. I have the TOCJ of Soundin' Off and it sounds very good to me. It's an excellent session - I prefer it to Blues in Trinity due to the single horn. Its a great showcase for Dizzy's playing.
  20. I love Braxton's Dortmund. Another fave is the Eskelin, One Great Day. And as mentioned, the sound on these babies is exceptional!
  21. Glad you're ok Alex! Black Ice - ugghhh! Two years ago this month, my wife and I were driving to work on a two lane local road above a reservior. It was dry out with no visible ice. All of a sudden around a curve, the guy in front of me starts skidding and hits the guard rail, I applied my breaks and hit the same patch of black ice that he must have hit. Unfortunately, my car plowed through the guard rail. Next thing I know, we're rolling down the embankment (seemed like slow motion). Fortunately, there were no trees in the way and quite a bit of snow to cusion the impact. We ended up up-side down at the bottom of the embankment, about 15 feet from the edge of the water. Thank God for seat belts - they kept us strapped in. We were hanging up-side down like a couple of bats. We were able to unbuckle the belts and crawl out the front since the windshield was gone. Neither of us was hurt. We got cut-up a little climbing up the embankment, but that was about it. Even though this one was probably unavoidable, I've since calmed my driving down quite a bit.
  22. I like Dortmund quite alot. I've never heard Willisau, but it's priced too outrageously now to pursue. Three Compositions of New Jazz is essential IMO as is For Alto, although there's parts of the latter that I have a hard time getting through. Like Jim, I also dig the GTM 2001 set and agree that it is best appreciated as an "ambient" background, rather than an an active listening experience. Say what you want about this guy, but he is definitely a true innovator.
  23. Didn't the Andrew Hill set disappear very quickly and without warning? I seem to recall that being he case.
  24. Jerry Seinfeld to Sidra (Terry Hatcher): "That Jayne Mansfield had some big breasts".
