I've really been diggin' the OLD 97's as of late. Especially TOO FAR TO CARE.

I have it, I like it, but discounting the Johnny Richards/Quincy Jones sessions and the organ-based sessions, there isn't that much variation. Mostly Stitt as the lone horn with piano, bass, drums backing. Having said that though, I love Sonny's playing and have on several occasions played two or three discs in the set in a row without getting bored. It's worth having IMO if you can swing the hefty price tag.

I've only heard bits and pieces of this one, but what I heard I immediately liked. I understand that there's two different CD releases of this and one is apparently preferable to the other. Can anyone comment on this?? The earlier CD issue (circa 1992) is the complete session. The "Collectables" issue (from 1999) crams two albums on one CD, and cuts a song or two from one or both dates (one tune is definitely dropped from the Hasaan date, I know that much). I haven't heard the "Collectables" issue, but I can't imagine the sound was better than the earlier single disc issue (which sounds good to me). Most of the "Collectables" dates I've heard have been less than wonderful, mastering-wise. Might be a Japanese issue of this one floating around -- but I'm rarely the one in the know about such things. I got mine at half.com for only like $5 or $6 (plus a couple bucks postage), but now the only ones there are all priced crazy at $30 and $50 a pop --- OUCH!!! And shit, they're all between $25 and $42 at Amazon.com's used marketplace too. WTF??? I know I saw multiple cheap copies on-line 3 or 4 months ago, mostly in the $10 to $15 range. What happened?? Thanks Tom. I was actually just able to grab the single session on an ebay Buy it Now for $9.99 incl. shipping. I'm looking forward to hearing it.

Last week I was putting my copy of Portrait of Cannonball (Original Riverside) on the turntable and it slipped out of my hand and got scratched against the stereo rack. It was perfect before, but now I got some nice pops in it.

I think you may be on to something. I always felt that this may be a reason why they're not as popular today.

I think the Hill was originally slated for the Fall of 2005. I like February much better!

OH BABY!!

On Tuesday evenings at 8pm, they run a series called Masters of American Music. Included are episodes featuring Monk, Coltrane, Holiday, Basie and Parker/Gillespie. They seem to show the same episode over and over again though. At 9pm for the past few weeks, they've been airing episodes of the Nat King Cole Show which was cool. Live at the Knitting Factory can be good depending on who's on. They also have a series called Classic Concerts that's worth watching once in a while. I find the rest of their programming too "smooth" for me.

My thoughts are with you - I'm sure everything will turn out ok.

That's a great line Martin! One of my favorite scenes is in the Townsend Library with the Glen Cove detectives. I love when "Mrs. Townsend" gives them the spiel about having too much to drink - "a little pink-eyed, but aren't we all" she says. Then she says to CG: "You didn't borrow Laura's Mercedes?" and then he delivers the line: "NO, I didn't borrow Laura's Mercedes" with that classic accent.

Did you find this at the WFMU fair?
